Correcting quantum errors with entanglement.

We show how entanglement shared between encoder and decoder can simplify the theory of quantum error correction. The entanglement-assisted quantum codes we describe do not require the dual-containing constraint necessary for standard quantum error-correcting codes, thus allowing us to "quantize" all of classical linear coding theory. In particular, efficient modern classical codes that attain the Shannon capacity can be made into entanglement-assisted quantum codes attaining the hashing bound (closely related to the quantum capacity). For systems without large amounts of shared entanglement, these codes can also be used as catalytic codes, in which a small amount of initial entanglement enables quantum communication.

Inequalities and separations among assisted capacities of quantum channels.

We exhibit quantum channels whose classical and quantum capacities, when assisted by classical feedback, exceed their unassisted classical Holevo capacity. These channels are designed to be noisy in a way that can be corrected with the help of the output and a reference system entangled with part of the input. A similar construction yields quantum channels whose classical capacity, when assisted by two-way classical communication independent of the source, exceeds their classical capacity assisted by feedback alone. We give a hierarchy of capacity inequalities and open questions.

A family of quantum protocols.

We introduce three new quantum protocols involving noisy quantum channels and entangled states, and relate them operationally and conceptually with four well-known old protocols. Two of the new protocols (the mother and father) can generate the other five "child" protocols by direct application of teleportation and superdense coding, and can be derived in turn by making the old protocols "coherent." This gives very simple proofs for two famous old protocols (the hashing inequality and quantum channel capacity) and provides the basis for optimal trade-off curves in several quantum information processing tasks.
