Poisoning of heterogeneous, late transition metal dehydrocoupling catalysts by boranes and other group 13 hydrides.

Borane reagents are widely used as reductants for the generation of colloidal metals. When treated with a variety of heterogeneous catalysts such as colloidal Rh, Rh/Al2O3, and Rh(0) black, BH3.THF (THF = tetrahydrofuran) was found to generate H2 gas with the concomitant formation of a passivating boron layer on the surface of the Rh metal, thereby acting as a poison and rendering the catalyst inactive toward the dehydrocoupling of Me2NH.BH3. Analogous poisoning effects were also detected for (i) colloidal Rh treated with other species containing B-H bonds such as [HB-NH]3, or Ga-H bonds such as those present in GaH3.OEt2, (ii) colloidal Rh that was generated from Rh(I) and Rh(III) salts using borane or borohydrides as reductants, and (iii) for other metals such as Ru and Pd. In contrast, analogous poisoning effects were not detected for the catalytic hydrogenation of cyclohexene using Rh/Al2O3 or the Pd-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling of PhB(OH)2 and PhI. These results suggest that although this poisoning behavior is not a universal phenomenon, the observation that such boron layers are formed and surface passivation may exist needs to be carefully considered when borane reagents are used for the generation of metal colloids for catalytic or materials science applications.

Ring-opening protonolysis of sila[1]ferrocenophanes as a route to stabilized silylium ions.

The ring-opening reactions of a series of sila[1]ferrocenophanes with protic acids of anions with various degrees of noncoordinating character have been explored. Ferrocenyl-substituted silyl triflates FcSiMe2OTf (5 a) and Fc(3)SiOTf (5 b) (Fc=(eta5-C5H4)Fe(eta5-C5H5)) were synthesized by means of HOTf-induced ring-opening protonolysis of strained sila[1]ferrocenophanes fcSiMe2 (3 a) and fcSiFc2 (3 b) (fc=(eta5-C5H4)2Fe). Reaction of 3 a and 3 b with HBF4 yielded fluorosubstituted ferrocenylsilanes FcSiMe2F (6 a) and Fc3SiF (6 b) and suggested the intermediacy of a highly reactive silylium ion capable of abstracting F- from the [BF4]- ion. Generation of the solvated silylium ions [FcSiMe2THF]+ (7a+), [Fc3SiTHF]+ (7b+) and [FcSiiPr2OEt2]+ (7c+) at low temperatures, by reaction of the corresponding sila[1]ferrocenophanes (3 a, 3 b, and fcSiiPr2 (3 c), respectively) with H(OEt2)(S)TFPB (S=Et2O or THF; TFPB=tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate) was monitored by using low-temperature 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. In situ reaction of 7a+, 7b+, and 7c+ with excess pyridine generated [FcSiMe2py]+ (8a+), [Fc3Sipy]+ (8b+), and [FcSiiPr2py]+ (8c+), respectively, as observed by 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. A preparative-scale reaction of 3 b with H(OEt2)(THF)TFPB at -60 degrees C and subsequent addition of excess pyridine gave isolable red crystals of 8b-[TFPB]CHCl3, which were characterized by 1H and 29Si NMR spectroscopy as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Highly metallized polymers: synthesis, characterization, and lithographic patterning of polyferrocenylsilanes with pendant cobalt, molybdenum, and nickel cluster substituents.

High molecular weight, soluble, air- and moisture-stable, highly metallized (>25 wt% metal) polyferrocenylsilanes (PFS) [Fe(eta-C5H4)2Si(Me){Co2(CO)6C2Ph}]n (Co-PFS), [Fe(eta-C5H4)2Si(Me){Mo2-Cp2(CO)4C2Ph}]n (Mo-PFS), and [Fe(eta-C5H4)2Si(Me){Ni2Cp2C2Ph}]n (Ni-PFS) containing pendant cobalt, molybdenum, and nickel clusters, respectively, have been prepared via macromolecular clusterization of an acetylide-substituted PFS [Fe(eta-C5H4)2Si(Me)C(triple bond)CPh]n with [Co(2)(CO)8], [{MoCp(CO)(2)}2], or [{NiCp(CO)}2]. The extent of clusterization achieved was in the range of 70-75%. All three highly metallized polymers were demonstrated to function as negative-tone resists in electron-beam lithography, while Co-PFS and Mo-PFS were successfully patterned by UV-photolithography, allowing the fabrication of micron-sized bars, dots, and lines. These studies suggest that the highly metallized polymers may be useful in the fabrication of patterned arrays of alloy nanoparticles for both materials science and catalytic applications.

Tailoring photonic crystals with nanometer-scale precision using polyelectrolyte multilayers.

In this paper, we describe a rapid, accurate, and convenient method for postsynthetically tuning the optical properties of colloidal photonic crystals. High quality photonic crystal films are first synthesized and then coated iteratively with layers of water-soluble polyelectrolytes. The coating process results in nanometer-scale shifts in the photonic stop band, a process which has been monitored by theoretical modeling. The results suggest a fundamentally different, reproducible layering mechanism inside the confined spaces of the colloidal crystal where polyelectrolyte multilayers are less densely packed.

Chemistry of phosphine-borane adducts at platinum centers: dehydrocoupling reactivity of Pt(II) dihydrides with P-H bonds.

The reaction of the Pt(II) dihydride complex cis-[PtH2(dcype)](dcype = 1,2-bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane) with the primary or secondary phosphine-borane adducts PhRPH x BH3(R = H, Ph) was found to exclusively afford the mono-substituted complexes cis-[PtH(PPhR x BH3)(dcype)](1: R = H; 2: R = Ph)via a dehydrocoupling reaction between Pt-H and P-H bonds. Similar reactivity was observed between the uncoordinated phosphines PhRPH (R = H, Ph) and cis-[PtH2(dcype)], which gave cis-[PtH(PPhR)(dcype)](4: R = H; 5: R = Ph). The complexes were characterized by 1H, 11B, 13C and 31P NMR spectroscopy, IR, MS and, in the case of 2, X-ray crystallography that confirmed the cis geometries. The di-substituted complex cis-[Pt(PhPH x BH3)2(dcype)](3) was prepared from the reaction of cis-[PtCl2(dcype)] with two equivalents of Li[PPhH x BH3]. This suggested that steric reasons alone cannot be used to explain the lack of reactivity with respect to a second dehydrocoupling reaction involving the remaining Pt-H bond in complexes 1, 2, 4 and 5.

Synthetic self-propelled nanorotors.

Self-powered completely synthetic nanorotors have been prepared from barcoded gold-nickel nanorods having the gold end anchored to the surface of a silicon wafer; constant velocity circular movements are observed when hydrogen peroxide fuel is catalytically decomposed to oxygen at the unattached nickel end of the nanorod.

Formation of dispersed nanostructures from poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane-b-dimethylsiloxane) nanotubes upon exposure to supercritical carbon dioxide.

While incompatible block copolymers commonly assemble into several established classical or complex morphologies, highly asymmetric poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane-b-dimethylsiloxane) (PFS-b-PDMS) diblock copolymers can also self-organize into high-aspect-ratio nanotubes with PDMS corona in the presence of PDMS-selective organic solvents. Exposure of these nanotubes on a carbon substrate to supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), also a PDMS-selective solvent, appears to promote partial dissolution of the copolymer molecules. At sufficiently high copolymer concentrations, the dissolved molecules subsequently re-organize within the scCO2 environment to form new copolymer nanostructures that redeposit on the substrate upon scCO2 depressurization. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that micelles form under all the conditions examined here, whereas nanotubes coalesce and vesicles develop only at relatively high temperatures. The extent to which the copolymer nanotubes dissolve and the size distribution of the replacement micelles are sensitive to exposure conditions. These results suggest that the phase behavior of PFS-b-PDMS diblock copolymers in scCO2 may be remarkably rich and easily tunable.

Photolytic living anionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of silicon-bridged [1]ferrocenophanes via an iron-cyclopentadienyl bond cleavage mechanism.

A new living anionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) method for sila[1]ferrocenophane 1 was developed using UV irradiation in the presence of Na[C5H5] as a promoter to afford controlled molecular weight polymers (Mn = 9.3 x 103 to 7.0 x 104, PDI = 1.04-1.21). A ring-opened ferrocenylsilane with a dangling silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl anion, which was obtained from a near-stoichiometric photoreaction of 1 with Li[C5H4Me], indicates an Fe-Cp bond cleavage mechanism for the photolytic ROP.

Cylindrical micelles from the aqueous self-assembly of an amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(ferrocenylsilane) (PEO-b-PFS) block copolymer with a metallo-supramolecular linker at the block junction.

A supramolecular AB diblock copolymer has been prepared by the sequential self-assembly of terpyridine end-functionalized polymer blocks by using Ru(III)/Ru(II) chemistry. By this synthetic strategy a hydrophobic poly(ferrocenylsilane) (PFS) was attached to a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block to give an amphiphilic metallo-supramolecular diblock copolymer (PEO/PFS block ratio 6:1). This compound was used to form micelles in water that were characterized by a combination of dynamic and static light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. These complementary techniques showed that the copolymers investigated form rod-like micelles in water; the micelles have a constant diameter but are rather polydisperse in length, and light scattering measurements indicate that they are flexible. Crystallization of the PFS in these micelles was observed by differential scanning calorimetry, and is thought to be the key behind the formation of rod-like structures. The cylindrical micelles can be cleaved into smaller rods whenever the temperature of the solution is increased or they are exposed to ultrasound.

Heterogeneous or homogeneous catalysis? Mechanistic studies of the rhodium-catalyzed dehydrocoupling of amine-borane and phosphine-borane adducts.

In depth, comparative studies on the catalytic dehydrocoupling of the amine-borane adduct Me(2)NH.BH(3) (to form [Me(2)N-BH(2)](2)) and the phosphine-borane adduct Ph(2)PH.BH(3) (to form Ph(2)PH-BH(2)-PPh(2)-BH(3)) with a variety of Rh (pre)catalysts such as [[Rh(1,5-cod)(micro-Cl)](2)], Rh/Al(2)O(3), Rh(colloid)/[Oct(4)N]Cl, and [Rh(1,5-cod)(2)]OTf have been performed in order to determine whether the dehydrocoupling proceeds by a homogeneous or heterogeneous mechanism. The results obtained suggest that the catalytic dehydrocoupling of Me(2)NH.BH(3) is heterogeneous in nature involving Rh(0) colloids, while that of Ph(2)PH.BH(3) proceeds by a homogeneous mechanism even when starting with Rh(0) precursors such as Rh/Al(2)O(3). The catalytic dehydrocoupling reactions are thought to proceed by different mechanisms due to a combination of factors such as (i) the greater reducing strength of amine-borane adducts, (ii) the increased ease of dissociation of phosphine-borane adducts, and (iii) phosphine ligation and/or poisoning of active catalytic sites on metal colloids.

Surface passivation of luminescent colloidal quantum dots with poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) through a ligand exchange process.

Polydimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (PDMAEMA) was used as a multidentate ligand to modify the surface of CdSe/ZnS core-shell colloidal quantum dots in toluene with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as the surface ligand. Adsorption of PDMAEMA was accompanied by release of TOPO. The process is free of agglomeration, and the modified nanocrystals become soluble in methanol. The photoluminescence properties are well-preserved in either toluene or methanol.

Donor-stabilized cations and imine transfer from N-silylphosphoranimines.

A series of donor-stabilized N-silylphosphoranimine salts [DMAP.PCl2=NSiMe3]+X- (DMAP = 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine) were prepared by the reaction of Cl3P=NSiMe3 with DMAP in the presence of silver salts AgX (X = OSO2CF3, BF4, and SbF6). Repeating the reaction in the absence of AgX gave the chloride salt [DMAP.PCl2=NSiMe3]Cl which has been shown to be in equilibrium with free DMAP and Cl3P=NSiMe3. Attempts to stabilize a N-silylphosphoranimine cation with phosphine donors led to unexpected imine transfer chemistry. For example, Cl3P=NSiMe3 reacts with phosphines, R3P (R = nBu and Ph), to produce the metathesis products PCl3 and R3P=NSiMe3 which subsequently react together to afford the N-phosphinophosphoranimines R3P=N-PCl2 and ClSiMe3 as a byproduct.

UV photopatterning of a highly metallized, cluster-containing poly(ferrocenylsilane).

Thin films of a cobalt-clusterized poly(ferrocenylsilane) have been shown to behave as a negative-tone resist for UV photolithography, allowing access to feature sizes between 20 and 300 microm. Pyrolysis of the patterned polymer at 900 degrees C under a N(2) atmosphere afforded patterned ferromagnetic ceramics with excellent shape retention.
