Elastogenesis in adenomatoid tumor: histochemical and ultrastructural observations.

An adenomatoid tumor from the round ligament of a 50-year-old woman was studied by light and electron microscopy. Ultrastructurally the tumor was remarkably similar to normal as well as neoplastic mesothelium, thus lending further support to the concept of a mesothelial origin of adenomatoid tumors. Comparative histochemical and ultrastructural studies revealed presence of acid mucopolysaccharides mainly along the luminal borders of the tumor cells, thus indicating likely production of this material by the tumor cells as opposed to the stromal cells. The stroma was rich in elastic fibers and there was evidence of active elastogenesis. This paper represents the first unequivocal demonstration of elastogenesis in an adenomatoid tumor.

Ultrastructure of endometrial stromal sarcoma.

An endometrial stromal sarcoma from a 48-year-old woman was studied by light and electron microscopy. Ultrastructurally most of the tumor cells resembled the stromal cells of midproliferative endometrium. There was no evidence of a pericytic differentiation of the tumor cells. These findings lend further support to the concept of an endometrial histogenesis of stromal sarcoma.

Anterior pituitary component in benign cystic ovarian teratomas. Report of three cases.

This paper documents three cases of benign cystic ovarian teratoma in which elements of adenohypophysis was recognized as one of the tissue components. Such findings have been recorded but not unequivocally documented in any of the previous reports of benign cystic teratomas. One of the tumors in this series also contained neuroglial tissue closely associated with the adenohypophyseal elements. The possibility that these neural elements might represent neurohypophysis is briefly discussed.

Experience with a modified fine-needle aspiration biopsy technique in 533 breast cases.

Aspiration cytology depends on skillful preparation of smears, which normally requires a trained cytotechnologist. Collection of aspirates into Saccomanno fixative permits preparation of high-quality smears by trained technologists no matter who does the aspiration. Aspiration by a surgeon was used with palpation and mammography to examine 533 patients in an office-based regional breast health program. Lesions sampled ranged from diffuse thickening to frank tumors. Lesions suspicious to any one of the three examinations were biopsed. Cytologically diagnosable material was obtained in 349 instances: 120 were malignant, 22 suspicious, 12 atypical, and 195 benign. Of the 184 yielding insufficient cells, 116 were benign on palpation and mammography, and 68 were suspicious. Biopsy proved 57 of these benign and 11 malignant. There were no cytologic false positives in the study. There was a 2% false-negative rate on productive aspirates. Nonproductive aspiration occurred in 4.8% of malignant cases.
