A slide latex test for detection of anti-zona pellucida activity in human sera was developed using a latex agglutination reaction. The latex reagent, made of polystyrene particles coated with solubilizing zona antigen(s), was found to give results comparable in sensitivity as well as specificity to those of the indirect immunofluorescence method as tested with anti-pig-zona antiserum and with human sera. Thus, the slide latex test was judged to be adequate for use instead of the indirect immunofluorescence technique.
The capacity to solubilize immune complexes formed in vitro was measured in 25 patients with Behcet's disease. Both the level of circulating immune complexes and that of complement are increased in these patients. The solubilization capacity appeared to increase, paralleling the rise of serum complement levels in patients with Behcet's disease. Thus, increased capacity to solubilize immune complexes may be attributed to complement that is increased in these patients. The relationship between the capacity to solubilize complexes and the pathogenesis of Behcet's disease is discussed.

Ovarian follicular growth during periovulatory period was measured using real-time ultrasound via vaginal route. In 15 patients examined preliminarily by the abdominal procedure, the mean follicular diameter increased from 15.6mm on four days before ovulation to a maximum of 21.8mm on the day of ovulation. A clear distinction of follicular development during periovulatory period could be made in 40 patients by the vaginal procedure. The mean distance between follicle and scanner was 5.6cm in the vaginal observation, which was significantly shorter than those observed in the abdominal observation. Thus, real-time ultrasound examination via vaginal route appears to be a useful technique for assessing the ovarian follicular development.
Human oocytes were obtained randomly from the ovaries excised from 28 patients at different stages of the menstrual cycle. When 114 oocytes were cultured for 40-40.5 h in a chemically defined medium 80 showed degeneration. When 16 of the remaining 64 oocytes were examined for their maturation, germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) had occurred in 11 oocytes. Another 48 oocytes were inseminated by ejaculated spermatozoa which were washed twice and preincubated for 3 h. When examined 10 h later, 19 (39.6%) were penetrated with an enlarged sperm head or male pronucleus(ei) and its corresponding sperm tail(s).

A total of 735 human serum samples were tested against isolated porcine ova for detection of autoantibodies to zonae pellucidae by the specific method reported previously using indirect immunofluorescence. Positive fluorescence was found in 13 of 175 samples (7.4%) from patients with unexplained infertility, in 2 of 122 samples (1.6%) from patients with proven etiology of infertility, but in none of 141 samples from age-matched control subjects (fertile women and men). There was an age difference in the incidence of positive reactions: 4 of 156 samples (2.6%) from women over 40 years old were positive in contrast to only 1 of 159 samples (0.6%) from women under 40 years old. Although autoantibodies to zonae pellucidae may be produced during the aging process, the observed high incidence in unexplained infertility suggests an etiologic association of the antibody with the disease when produced in younger women.
