Effects of prolonged administration of high molecular levan on hematological parameters in rabbits.

Rabbits were injected intraperitoneally with 100 mg of high molecular levan, daily for 4--6 weeks. Study of various hematological parameters revealed that the treatment resulted in the following changes: 1. Marked elevation in fibrinogen levels and in the number of platelets. 2. Insignificant changes in the intrinsic and extrinsic clotting mechanisms and in platelet aggregation. 3. Some reduction in the number of circulating RBCs. The findings indicate that levan treatment has no obvious effect on hematologic functions, except for the increase in fibrinogen and platelets and the slight decrease in circulating RBCs.

Effect of ethynyl estradiol on the secretion of hepatic triglyceride.

The concentrations of triglyceride in the blood of female rats increased 2- and 4-fold during treatment with 5 and 15 mug/kg of ethynyl estradiol, respectively. The rate of secretion of triglyceride increased 66% over controls with livers obtained from the rats administered ethynyl estradiol. Ethynyl estradiol induced a hypocholesterolemia in the donor animals but the secretion of cholesterol into the perfusate from livers obtained from these animal was not affected. Adrenal corticosterone levels were depressed 48% in animals receivint of ethynyl estradiol on the liver or secondary to other hormonal changes.

A fatal hyperpyrexial response to bleomycin following prior therapy: a case report and literature review.

Bleomycin is an effective drug used in the therapy of many malignant diseases. Such toxicities as fever, chills, and pulmonary fibrosis are well known to occur following administration of this drug. A rare fatal hyperpyrexial response has also been noted with this agent. We describe a case of fatal hyperthermia after an injection of bleomycin. Unlike earlier reported cases, our patient developed her reaction following prior uneventful therapy with bleomycin rather than as a response to initial treatment. Factors that may be related to the hyperpyrexial response to bleomycin are discussed and the relevant literature reviewed.
