Recognizing and helping narcotic addicts in general practice.

It is rare for many general practitioners to be consulted by a narcotic addict. It can be a disturbing experience. Those who practise in urban areas of low socioeconomic status where there is high youth unemployment are more likely to meet addicted young people, but the experiences are uneven, even in this context.

Health status of a group of narcotic addicts in a methadone treatment programme.

This study, which arose out of a concern for the health status of narcotic addicts already in a treatment programme, has demonstrated that there is a severe level of impairment of general health. A summary of important findings is reported. Narcotic addiction leads to secondary medical morbidity and mortality, but health impairment also follows the gross disorder of living which has its roots in childhood, and early adolescent experience. Successful prevention and rehabilitation needs to be based on this knowledge.

A relationship between functional age and health status in female subjects.

A multiple regression equation was used to predict age from seven clinical variables in 1080 apparently well female subjects. A multiple correlation coefficient of R = 0.77 was achieved by five of the variables: timed forced expiratory volume, systolic blood pressure, plasma urea nitrogen, cholesterol, and alkaline phosphatase. On the basis of selection by medical questionnaire responses and other objective criteria, 9% of the subjects were nonsmokers and healthier than the rest. These selected subjects showed a significant reduction in preducted age. Within this group, subjective perception of health was associated with differences in predicted age: poor health with an increase and good health with a decrease in functional age. This study of functional age was based on the healthiest segment of the population in order to minimize the effect of overt pathological processes on the aging rate. An association has been demonstrated between health impairment and predicted age as a measure of the aging rate.

A volunteer crisis service. Pattern of utilization and referral.

One characteristic of contemporary Australian society is the increase in the number of self-help and volunteer groups operating at the social-medical interface. An analysis of the utilization and referral pattern of a volunteer crisis team shows that for a large number of people, it becomes the point of access to other helping agencies, 9% of which are medical and 7% legal.
