Photochemical dehydrogenation of 5, 6-dihydropyrimidines.

5, 6-Dihydropyrimidines can be oxidized photochemically to the original pyrimidines with light of lambda greater than 300 nm in the presence of transition metal salts which act as sensitizers. A hydrogen atom abstraction by hydroxyl radical is suggested as the reaction mechanism.

The eye in the partial trisomy 2q syndrome.

Mandibulofacial dysostosis, mental retardation, skeletal, genital, and ocular malformations occurred in a family with partial trisomy of the long arm of chromosome 2. Translocations of chromatin material from the long arm of chromosome 2 to the short arm of chromosome 9 was balanced in the female carriers of the pedigree but was unbalanced among the males. Ocular signs in the males included uveal coloboma, anterior chamber angle anomalies as in Ringer's syndrome, congenital glaucoma with dislocated lens, exotropia, and blepharoconjunctivitis. These findings were related to an inherited malformation syndrome.

Determination of fat in vegetable foods.

The fat in vegetable foods--tree nuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds, avocado, and olives--can be determined volumetrically by acid digestion of the material and separation of the fat. The assay can be performed conveniently by using the equipment developed for fat determination of milk (Gerber method). The results agree well with those obtained by Soxhlet extraction. The advantages of using the Gerber method for vegetable foods are simplicity, speed, low operation cost, and elimination of the use of inflammable solvents.
