Further characterization of a broad-spectrum antiviral substance in human serum.

A broadly active antiviral glycoprotein (UTI beta) occurs naturally in human sera at an average antiviral titer of 50 U/ml. This inhibitor is active against all virus families tested to date, including representative poxviruses, herpesviruses, enteroviruses, paramyxoviruses, alpha-viruses, flaviviruses, bunyaviruses, and rhabdoviruses. It is a glycoprotein of approximately 60,000 +/- 10,000 Da, which is stable at pH 2 to 10 and at 80 degrees C for up to 10 min. Mild oxidation with NaIO4 and treatment with glycosidases inactivates the material. Proteolytic degradation of the inhibitor molecule releases small active components of < 1000 Da, which retain antiviral activity. This activity of the small components has increased heat stability (120 degrees C for 15 min) and is inactivated by glycosidases. The antiviral activity thus appears to reside mainly in the oligosaccharide moiety of the glycoprotein. The inhibitor does not neutralize virions, but prevents attachment of most viruses to cells. These properties occur also in highly purified preparations. These findings indicate that human serum contains significant concentrations of a broadly active antiviral glycoprotein, which is distinct from interferon and other antiviral substances naturally found in human body fluids and tissues.

Lung function in highlander Bods of Ladakh.

A cross-sectional sample of 221 male Bods, 11 to 19 years, from Leh, Ladakh, was studied to determine some biological responses to the environment. The higher forced vital capacity and increased association between chest measurements and respiratory function as well as increased chest dimensions of the Bods resemble the findings on highland Peruvians. These differences from lowland Bods and Indians may partially be attributable to low oxygen pressure in higher areas. However, the contributing effect of factors, viz. varying activity levels and genetics, cannot be dismissed.

Adolescent

Growth trends among male Bods of Ladakh--a high altitude population.

A random sample of 274 native male Bods of Ladakh ranging in age from 11 to 19 years, living in Leh (Ladakh) at mean altitude of 3,514 metres, was studied. The pattern of growth of this sample was compared with the sea level Indians. The results indicate that: (1) The so called adolescent spurt is not well defined among Bod highlanders. (2) Bods grow faster than plain dwelling Indians and are taller and heavier at the age of 19 years. (3) The highlanders exhibit greater chest circumference than the lowland norms. This finding, similar to those among Andean natives, supports high altitude hypoxia's role in human growth and morphology.

Morphologic variability of human chromosomes: polymorphism of constitutive heterochromatin.

Polymorphism of constitutive heterochromatin has been studied in a series of 30 normal individuals. A high frequency of C-band variants were observed. Twenty-six of the 30 individuals studied had at least one polymorphic variant of the C band. A total of 42 variants were recorded which were predominately localized near the centromeric heterochromatin block of chromosome 9 (26.19%), chromosome 16 (19.05%), and chromosome 1 (16.66%). These results are discussed together with the findings revealed by different studies.

Chromosomes

Morphological variability of the human chromosomes in two Indian populations - Rajputs and Punjabis.

Karotypic evaluation of 100 Rajputs and 100 Punjabis revealed different frequencies of Y chromosome polymorphism and minor chromosome variants. Long Y chromosome were observed 5% of the Rajputs and 3% of the Punjabis. The Y indices of Rajputs were consistently higher than those of Punjabis. Significant differences were noted between Rajputs and Punjabis with respect to the 5 Y indices. Significant differences were also found when those 2 populations were compared with different populations of the world. Minor chromosome variants were observed in 18% of the Rajputs and 19% of the Punjabis.

Modified method of C banding using barium hydroxide.

A modified centromeric heterochromatin banding technique using barium hydroxide octahydrate is described. The relationship between slide maturity and time of denaturation by barium-hydroxide is discussed.
