Recovery of cell volume and electrolytes of A6 cells after re-establishing isotonicity following hypotonic stress.

Cellular element concentrations and dry weight contents in A6 cells were determined using electron microprobe analysis to establish whether these cells exhibit a regulatory volume increase (post-RVD-RVI) when re-establishing isotonicity following a hypotonically induced regulatory volume decrease (RVD). Hypotonic stress was induced by reducing basolateral [NaCl], and hence, osmolarity fell from 260 to 140 mosmol/l. The alterations in cell volume after re-establishing isotonicity, calculated from the cellular dry weight changes, indicate within the first 2 min cell shrinkage from 120 to 76% of control, compatible with almost ideal osmometric behaviour of A6 cells, and thereafter a post-RVD-RVI to 94%. The cellular uptake of osmolytes necessary to explain the post-RVD-RVI could be accounted for solely by a gain in cellular K and Cl. The involvement of a Na-K-2Cl cotransporter in most of the KCl uptake seems plausible since basolateral bumetanide blocked KCl uptake and post-RVD-RVI. The net uptake of cations (K uptake of 185.2, Na loss of 8.2 mmol/kg dry wt) during the isotonic period exceeded the Cl uptake by 38.2 mmol/kg dry wt, suggesting the uptake of another anion and/or the alteration of cellular buffer capacity. The relatively low Na concentration maintained during the isotonic period (13.3 vs. 20.4 mmol/kg wet wt under control conditions) might favour electrolyte uptake via the Na-K-2Cl cotransporter.

Nutrient removal of ammonia rich effluents in a sequencing batch reactor.

The aim of this study was to develop an appropriate operating strategy for ammonia removal of young landfill leachate in a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor, SBR. SBR was operated at five different phases by changing the aerobic cycle time and external carbon source during the denitrification process. SBR provides the opportunity to arrange the operating periods according to variable conditions such as wastewater characterization in order to optimise the performance of the system. By monitoring the variations occurring in each period during a full cycle an appropriate operating strategy may be defined. The main problem faced during the experimentation period particularly was due to use of raw wastewater with high NH4-N content as an external carbon source, as it affected denitrification performance to a great extent. This trouble was overcome if calcium acetate was used as the external carbon source instead of the raw wastewater. In case of using a suitable aeration period and the convenient external carbon source, high ammonia removals were observed.

Rehabilitation and water quality monitoring in the Golden Horn.

In this work, the oceanographic aspects of the Golden Horn and some results of the Golden Horn Rehabilitation Project are presented. The hydrographic structure of the Golden Horn responds rapidly to the conditions in the southern Bosphorus, which is especially true for the outer parts of the estuary up to the Valide Sultan Bridge (VS). West of this bridge which was blocked by the pontoons of the bridge, carries the major pollution load and is dependent on the underlying water and surface mixing, for its renewal. The dissolved oxygen concentrations were measured below the detection limit in the region between the VS and Eyüp-Sütlüce (ES) section during the majority of the measurement periods where H2S has been determined simultaneously until February 2000. Although the microbial contamination of the estuary stations is very high, decreases in the contamination at stations are observed. The highest concentrations are recorded at the ES-VS section and supported by Fecal Coliform data during the rainy months in general despite the operational collector system surrounding the estuary. An obvious decrease of pollution in comparison with the data of the previous years is clearly observed as an encouraging result of the rehabilitation efforts achieved so far.

Left ear (right temporal hemisphere) advantage and left temporal hemispheric dysfunction in schizophrenia.

In this study, to investigate the right or left ear advantages in psychiatric patients. the durations of hearing for right and left ears were assessed in 61 psychiatric patients, 26 with schizophrenia, 17 with depressive disorder, 13 with bipolar affective disorder, and 5 with brief psychotic disorder, plus 24 controls. Diagnoses were made on the basis of information provided from clinical interviews and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). Schizophrenia was associated with a left ear advantage, and both depressive disorder and brief psychotic disorder were associated with right ear advantage as well as controls. These results suggest that their schizophrenia may be associated with a left temporal lobe dysfunction.

Biological ammonia removal from anaerobically pre-treated landfill leachate in sequencing batch reactors (SBR).

The aim of the study was to investigate both the use of the SBR technology in biological ammonia removal from landfill leachate, and the suitability of raw landfill leachate as external carbon source in denitrification step. The SBR was fed with diluted leachate for the first 42 days and then the effluent of UASBR was used as the feed. The SBR was operated intermittently with a cycle time of 24 hours. The effluent NH4(+)-N values of less than 5 mg NH4(+)-N L-1 was consistently observed for the initial NH4(+)-N levels of as high as 1000 mg NH4(+)-N L-1. The nitrification rates for the first, second and third stages were found as 5.7, 46.8 and 102.8 mg NH4(+)-N L-1 h-1, respectively. The difference of the nitrification rates in the 2nd and 3rd stages originated from increasing adaption of the sludge as well as increasing biomass concentration (10.5 mg NH4(+)-N g-1 VSS h-1). No significant accumulation of NO2(-)-N has been observed during the study and NO2(-)-N/NOx(-)-N ratios measured in the 1st aerobic phase and the SBR effluent were less than 7%. The denitrification rates for the second (raw leachate as carbon source) and the third (Ca(CH3COO)2 as carbon source) stages were determined as 45.7 mg NOx(-)-N L-1 h-1 (or 9.85 mg NOx(-)-N g-1 VSS h-1) and 125.7 mg NOx(-)-N L-1 h-1 (or 12.88 mg NOx(-)-N g-1 VSS h-1), respectively.

Multiple diffuse fibrosarcoma of bone.

Multiple diffuse fibrosarcoma of bone is a very rare condition, with only 3 cases reported. Its presentation is like that of a multiple myeloma or a metastatic tumor, with multiple osteolytic lesions, and its extent is limited to the bones. Disseminated involvement of the vertebrae was detected in a 26-year-old man, suggesting a metastatic tumor; however, no primary organ or soft-tissue mass was identified. The histopathologic findings of the biopsy material were consistent with fibrosarcoma. Despite treatment, the patient died within 15 months.

Compression neuropathy of the peroneal nerve caused by a ganglion.

Peroneal nerve injury usually results from fracture of the fibula neck or direct pressure from an ill-fitting plaster cast. Clinically, these patients present with "drop foot." Compression neuropathy caused by a ganglion is rarely encountered. This report concerns the clinical and radiologic evaluation of a 57-year-old man admitted to our clinic with left drop foot. A mass compressing the peroneal nerve at the level of the fibula neck was excised totally and diagnosed as a ganglion.
