[Hygienic-bacteriological examinations in station restaurants (author's transl)].

In four station restaurants (West station, East station, South station, Kelenföld station) microbiological examinations were carried out in conjunction with the inspection of the hygienic conditions. The microflora of the washed and dried drinking glasses and plates as well as the smocks of the kitchen staff were examined. Intestinal bacteria, chromogenic bacteria and pathogenic staphylococci were found in numerous crockery samples. Therefore, it is necessary either to improve the effectiveness of the cleaning process or to prolong the drying of the crockery by heat. Numerous species, such as intestinal bacteria, chromogenic bacteria liable to cause food-decomposition were found in the kitchen staff's smocks, sometimes even in great quantities. To reliably determine the microbiological limit values for smocks and other textiles, a great number of examinations are still necessary. The smocks of the staff handling pre-cooked meals, cold meals or pastries must also be microbiologically clean.--The medical activity in the areas mentioned proved also beneficial to the training in hygiene.

[Airborne microflora found in some stations of the metro in the Hungarian capital of Budapest (author's transl)].

Both the microflora and some physical parameters of the air in three underground railway (metro) stations were analysed. The air samples taken in the first two stations contained considerably more microbes, namely three times as many, than the sample from station No. 3. In the samples from the first two stations both the pathogenic and anthropogenic germs occured more frequently than in the samples from the third station. The normal flora consisted of gram-positive cocci/Streptococci, Micrococci, Sarcina. Roughly 10 per cent of the microbes proved to be spore-formers. Selective investigations led to the detection of Staph. aureus, Enterococci, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichiae, Klebsiella and Proteus bacteria. The reason why the stations of line 2 were found to be contaminated to a greater degree is probably because of the higher passenger traffic, the smaller space, as well as the stronger airflow due to the artificial ventilation and the piston effect of the trains. The effect of the artificial environmental conditions on the staff of the metro company still needs further investigation. The effect on the passengers is considered to be less pronounced.

[Microflora in milk powder and baby food in powder form (author's transl)].

After a discussion of the microbiological standards for milk powder and powdered baby food in various countries, the results of the microbiological analyses of some 1500 samples of these foodstuffs were presented. It emerged that the microflora of these products consists mainly of lactobacteria (they are not demonstrable with all culture methods), micrococci and bacilli: the latter are those with the greatest importance with respect to food hygiene. In addition to these Clostridia and moulds are also found in the samples; very occasionally enterobacteria are also found. No pathogenic germs were detected. With respect to the proposals for standards it was found that the latest Hungarian standards proposals are acceptable provided that the methods of analysis (culturing after Polonyi) are retained also for the proposals discussed.

[Analysis of the germ content of the air in university lecture rooms (author's transl)].

The microflora of the air in university lecture rooms was examined with the sedimentation method. For this purpose blood agar (20 degrees C and 37 degrees C), saline agar and Endo plates were used. The germ counts identified correlate to the size and utilization of the rooms. The lowest germ count was determined in the room used for practical work, which was followed by the lecture room. The newly built lecture room contained the highest colony count. The floor ventilation furnishes an explanation for this. Most of the colonies were Gram-positive cocci (micrococci, indifferent streptococci, sarcins). Aerobic spore-forming organisms were found to be present in smaller quantities than cocci. Fungi, mainly, moulds grew better at a temperature of 20 centigrade. The microbiological monitoring of air forms an important part of environmental protection. Great importance can be attached to a stardization of the air germ count in the prevention of airborne infections.

[The action of detergents upon microbes (author's transl)].

The effect of sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate in the concentration range of 0.125%-1.0% upon gas formation by Klebsiella and Escherichia was studied. The experiments were performed in Szántha's gas tubes on synthetic culture media containing glycerol; gas formation was measured volumetrically. Concentrations below 1.0% were found to promote gas formation when compared with the control tubes. In accordance with previous papers published, enteric and chromogenic bacteria also multiplied well in the presence of 1.0% DBS-Na. It is shown by the results at hand that additional studies of the influence of detergents upon processes of self-purification in surface waters should be performed.

[Lambliasis in a european child in Cuba (author's transl)].

Attention is drawn to the possibility of infection with Lamblia intestinalis (Giardia lamblia). In Europe, this parasite is found in 3-26% of children; for tropical countries, higher infection rates are given. In Cuba, infection with Lamblia caused intestinal disorders in a European child.
