Primary ovarian lymphoma. A case report.

A 44-year-old woman with stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) of the left ovary is described. She had an extended hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-ophorectomy and thereafter received six courses of combination chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, vincristine and predonisolone; CHOP). The patient is well with no evidence of recurrence at 12 months after surgery. The literature on primary ovarian lymphoma is reviewed.

Insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion, and glucose effectiveness in anorexia nervosa: a minimal model analysis.

The aim of the present study was to estimate insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity (SI), and glucose effectiveness (SG) in subjects with anorexia nervosa. Eight nondiabetic anorectic patients who were dietary restricters and 16 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects without family history of diabetes were studied. They underwent a modified frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test; glucose (300 mg/kg body weight) was administered and insulin (4 mU/kg body weight/min) was infused from 20 to 25 minutes after administration of glucose. SI and SG were estimated by Bergman's minimal model method. Basal glucose (75.5 +/- 2.1 v 87.1 +/- 1.7 mg/dL) and insulin (3.6 +/- 0.4 v 6.3 +/- 0.5 microU/mL) concentrations were significantly lower in anorectic patients than in control subjects (P < .01). No significant difference was observed in glucose disappearance rate (KG) between the anorectic and control subjects (1.56 +/- 0.5 v 2.26 +/- 0.15%/min). Insulin secretion assessed by the integrated area of plasma insulin above basal level during the first 20 minutes after intravenous stimulation with glucose was significantly decreased in anorectic patients (283 +/- 69 microU.mL-1 x min) compared with control subjects (529 +/- 63 microU.mL-1 x min, P < .05). SI was significantly increased in anorectic patients compared with control subjects (11.2 +/- 1.2 v 7.5 +/- 1.0 x 10(-4) min-1 +/-.[microU/mL]-1, P < .05). However, SG was significantly decreased in anorectic patients (0.015 +/- 0.003 min-1) compared with control subjects (0.023 +/- 0.002 min-1, P < .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Normal levels of IgG subclass in childhood determined by a sensitive ELISA.

Normal values of all IgG subclasses were determined using a sensitive ELISA in children aged from newborn to 14 years. The upper and lower limits of normal values of all IgG subclasses were obtained in all the age groups using 29 umbilical cord blood samples from full-term newborns and 308 venous blood samples from normal infants and children. The trends in the levels of IgG1, IgG2 and IgG3 with age were almost similar to previous reports. IgG4 levels decreased gradually until reaching the lowest level at 7 to 12 months and increased gradually with age, reaching a plateau at 12 to 14 years of age. Thus, the lower limit of serum IgG4 levels was determined using our method.

Intravenous glucose tolerance test-derived glucose effectiveness in physically trained humans.

Glucose effectiveness (SG) and insulin sensitivity of sedentary and physically trained males were estimated by the minimal model approach. Trained subjects, who ran 86 +/- 10 km/wk and had 37% higher maximal oxygen consumption than that of sedentary subjects (56.2 +/- 1.2 vs. 40.9 +/- 1.4 ml.kg-1 x min-1, P < 0.01), were studied 16 h and 1 wk after their last training session. After overnight fasting, glucose was administered intravenously (300 mg/kg body wt) within 2 min, and insulin was infused (approximately 13-20 mU/kg given over 5 min) from 20 to 25 min after administration of glucose. Glucose disappearance constant values as an estimate of glucose tolerance were significantly higher in trained subjects after 16 h and 1 wk of their training session (3.29 +/- 0.48 and 3.60 +/- 0.64%/min) than in sedentary subjects (1.92 +/- 0.30%/min, P < 0.05). Insulin sensitivity in trained subjects measured after 16 h and 1 wk of their last training session (26.2 +/- 4.4 and 24.3 +/- 6.0 x 10(-5) min-1 x pM-1) was also higher than that of sedentary subjects (10.3 +/- 1.2 x 10(-5) min-1 x pM-1, P < 0.05). SG, the ability of glucose itself to increase peripheral glucose uptake and suppress hepatic glucose output, was significantly higher in trained subjects after 16 h and 1 wk of their last training session (0.028 +/- 0.003 and 0.030 +/- 0.004/min) than in sedentary subjects (0.017 +/- 0.002/min, P < 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Perpendicular contact guidance of CNS neuroblasts on artificial microstructures.

Rodent CNS neuroblasts show parallel and perpendicular contact guidance behaviors on aligned neurite bundles in microexplant cultures (Nakatsuji, N. and Nagata, I. (1989) Development, 106, 441-447; N. I. and N. N. (1991) ibid., 112, 581-590). To test the hypothesis that the physical surface structure of the neurite bundle causes the perpendicular contact guidance, we cultured dissociated neuroblasts on quartz plates on which grating-like microstructures were fabricated by lithographic techniques. Various types of CNS neuroblasts, but not PNS neurons, oriented their processes and migrated both perpendicular and parallel to the axis of the microstructure. Perpendicular orientation was frequently observed when the microstructured grooves had depths between 0.3 micron and 0.8 micron and a width of 1 micron, which roughly mimics a tightly aligned neurite bundle. Thus, CNS neuroblasts have the ability to extend their processes and migrate perpendicular to aligned surface microstructures.

Changes of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets before and after operation of patients with endometriosis.

This study was performed to elucidate whether endometriotic lesions can affect peripheral blood lymphocyte-subsets. Changes of lymphocyte-subsets of normal healthy women and patients with uterine myoma or endometriosis before and after operation were also examined by using two-color assay methods. The percentage and absolute number of CD57+CD16+ cells [moderately differentiated natural killer (NK) cells] of NK cell subsets in peripheral blood from patients with endometriosis were significantly lower than values from normal healthy women and patients with uterine myoma, while there was no difference in CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte-subsets between normal healthy women and patients with uterine myoma or endometriosis. In patients with endometriosis the percentage and absolute number of CD8+CD11+ cells (suppressor T-cells) was significantly increased after operation, while those in patients with urine myoma did not change. On the other hand, resection of endometriotic lesions resulted in a significant decrease of the percentage of CD57+CD16- cells (immature NK cells) and a significant increase of not only the percentage but also the absolute number of CD57+CD16+ cells (moderately differentiated NK cells), suggesting that existence of endometriotic lesions disturbs differentiation of the NK cells. Furthermore, suppressor inducer T-cells as shown by measuring CD4+2H4+ and CD4+4B4- cells were significantly increased after operation of endometriosis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Establishment and characterization of a CA125-producing human ovarian clear cell carcinoma cell line].

A human ovarian cancer cell line designated "KK" was established from ascites of a patient with ovarian clear cell carcinoma. This cell line was grown for more than 2 years and over 140 passages in medium RPMI1640 containing 10% FCS. Doubling time of this cell line at passage 70 was approximately 4 days and saturation density was 1.1 x 10(5)/cm2. Plating efficiency was approximately 23%. Chromosome analysis revealed aneuploidy with a model number of 67. PAS-positive substances were present in the cytoplasm. CA125 and SLX were detected in both the original tumor and the cultured cells. This cell line is less sensitive to cisplatin than KF cells and IC50 was 0.95 microM.

[Inhibitory effects of oral administration of ginsenoside Rh2 on tumor growth in nude mice bearing serous cyst adenocarcinoma of the human ovary].

We examined the inhibitory effect of the oral administration of ginsenoside Rh2 (Rh2) on tumor growth in nude mice bearing human ovarian cancer cells (HRA). In the first experiment, it was revealed that daily administration of 30 microM Rh2 significantly inhibited tumor growth. In the second experiment, therefore, various concentration of Rh2 (1, 15, 30, 60, 120 microM) were administered every day for 91 days, beginning the day after tumor inoculation. Treatment with Rh2 resulted in a remarkable retardation of the HRA cell tumor growth. In particular, tumor growth in mice treated with 15, 30 and 120 microM Rh2 was significantly inhibited, compared to that in CDDP treated mice as well as in untreated mice. Consequently, 50% survival in nude mice treated with 15, 30 and 120 microM Rh2 was significantly prolonged, compared to that not only in untreated mice but also in CDDP treated mice. No side effect was observed in any mice treated with Rh2. Red ginseng containing Rh2 has been used exclusively, orally administered. In the present study, we considered that oral administration of Rh2, which is a component of red ginseng, has strong inhibitory effects on human ovarian cancer cell growth in nude mice.
