Study of an artificial endoassociation between Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli.

The establishment of an artificial endoassociation between Escherichia coli (JC 5466, trp, his, recA 56, lac delta X 74, SpcR, harbouring the plasmid pRD1 which confers on it the capacity to produce penicillinase), and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (3.2, a, ade, ura, lys) was carried out in order to study its behaviour and stability. The pattern of protoplast reversion to whole cells, the penicillinase production capacity, the stability without selective pressure and the bacterial localization in the yeast cells, is described and discussed.

In vivo determination of efficacy of pyrazoloquinolinones at the benzodiazepine receptor.

The pyrazoloquinolinones CGS 9896, CGS 9895 and CGS 8216 potently displace the benzodiazepines from their CNS binding site in vitro but have been reported to display agonist, partial agonist and antagonist activity respectively in a number of in vivo tests in rats. We found CGS 9896 to have only weak antipentylenetetrazole activity in mice at doses which produced near maximal displacement of [3H]flunitrazepam in vivo and were not able to detect any antipentylenetetrazole activity of CGS 9895. However, CGS 9895 blocked the anticonvulsant effect of diazepam at doses closely related to those which inhibited the in vivo binding of [3H]flunitrazepam and CGS 9896 also showed some reversal of the antipentylenetetrazole action of diazepam. This is consistent with the notion that CGS 9896 is a partial agonist and CGS 9895 an antagonist at the benzodiazepine receptor.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2b in twins.

The syndrome of multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN or MEA) type 2b is characterized by the association of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, phaeochromocytoma, ganglioneuromatosis and Marfan-like features. Though this disorder usually shows a familial distribution, it may also appear spontaneously as the result of a genetic mutation. This paper describes the second case of MEA type 2 in twins, and appears to be the first description in twins of the association of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, Marfan-like features and multiple neuromas.

Effect of enkephalins in the presence of the antibiotic bacitracin in the longitudinal muscle strip preparation from guinea-pig ileum.

The antibiotic bacitracin (5 x 10(-5) -4 x 10(-4) M) increase the inhibition of the contractile response caused by both enkephalin release and direct application of Met-enkephalin 5 x 10(-7) M in the longitudinal muscle strip preparation from guinea-pig ileum. This effect is attributed to an inhibition of enkephalin degrading peptidases by bacitracin.
