The population of diabetics of a district was analysed concerning the age structure, the proportion of the insulin-dependent patients as well as the insulin-dependent diabetics older than 60 years were analysed with regard to the degree of the realization of insulinisation. 13.8% of all diabetics with an age older than 60 years are insulin-dependent. In 71.5% of them the insulinisation is realized. Only in 43% of all insulin-dependent older diabetics an autoinjection of insulin is possible. The results are discussed and propositions for changing the situation are submitted.

The efficiency of electrophoretic methods (gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing, twodimensional techniques) and of chromatographic methods (size exclusion and ion exchange chromatography, reversed phase HPLC) to analyze proteins in foods is reviewed. Several selected applications are discussed in detail. The large diversity of proteins in a particular food results in a unique electrophoretic or chromatographic pattern, that can be used for identification purposes, by means of the so called indicator proteins. The adaptability and resolving power of the methods assure their extended application to many protein containing foods. The uniqueness of the patterns obtained warranties differentiations of even closely related animal or plant foods as well as mixtures of them. The methods also allow quantitative determinations of mixtures of foods. Their ease of handling and good reproducibility and reliability favours their use in routine analyses. Numerous investigations on fish, meat and derived products, non-meat proteins in meat products, milk, cheese, cereals and products made of cereals, oilseed proteins, legumes, fruits and vegetables described in the literature are here presented.

2,4,6-tribromo-3-carboxyalkyl-benzamides and -carboxyalkoxy-benzamides are intensely sweet. With a recognition threshold value of about 1 mumol/l the 3-carboxyethyl compound is one of the sweetest compounds known. The intensity of the sweet taste depends upon the nature of the carboxyalkyl/carboxylalkoxy group. In respect to the acute toxicity to mice the compounds are similar to the sodium salt of saccharin and sodium cyclamate. The compounds are easily obtainable in good yield.

Because of the results of a large number of long-term check-ups the adhesive tape--extension treatment recommended for fractures of the femur in early infancy has been much criticized in the past two decades. Allergy to the adhesive tape, skin necrosis and mainly abnormal position of the foot on recovery made it necessary to modify the procedure and to discuss the over-estimation of treatments of this type. One hundred and thirteen patients were followed up for a long time (maximum 17 years) after the application of the Schede-type suspension and in none of the cases was a malformed position of the foot with grave consequences or interfering with development observed. No case has been reported in the literature in which death could be attributed to the adhesive tape-extension, while surgical intervention might have a fatal outcome in some rare cases. The authors see no indication for rejecting entirely the Schede-type suspension.
Presentation of a case of intestinal duplication sited in the rectosigmoid colon. Rectosigmoid colon and duplication were coated with gastric mucosa. Diagnosis of heterotopic gastric mucosa was done by biopsy and 99mTc-pertechnetate scintigraphy. The diseased colon was removed by Rehbein pull-through procedure. Complete removal was proved by clinical course and scintigraphy.

An evaluation of 105 cases of abdominal wound rupture is reported which represents 1.9% of a total of 5,552 laparotomies performed in children during the years 1960 to 1975. Most ruptures occurred in infants. Prior to other reasons, the frequency seems to depend on the original disease. 23% of the cases, predominantly newborns and infants, had a lethal course.
