At the beginning of the 20s, Russia was devastated by famine and plagues. This paper deals with the life and work of the Leipzig physician Paul Carly Seyfarth (1890-1950), who participated in the Red Cross relief expedition to Russia. In 1922/23, Seyfarth was appointed director of the German Alexander-Hospital in Petersburg, which he reorganized and modernized for the treatment of infectious diseases.

From 1954 to 1985 211 woman with carcinoma of the vulva were treated at the medical college Dresden. 66 patients were found at the FIGO stage I, 69 at stage II, 50 at stage III, 18 at stage IV; 8 could not be classified. In the total group of woman the cumulative survival rate due to the different stages were: 72% at stage I, 56% at stage II, 28% at stage III and 13% at stage IV. The 5-year survival rates were different in women undergoing a total vulva operation (76%) from vulvectomized women (60%) and partial vulvectomized woman (48%). So the total vulva operation had a great effect on outcome. In female patients which underwent palliative surgical treatment the survival rate could be increased by means of the postoperative radiation therapy. It is a matter of outstanding importance to the vulva carcinoma prognosis to operate radically and as soon as possible.
Starting from the ideological position of physicians before the first world war it is shown that the majority of physicians accepted this war and that pacifists among them belonged to a minority, which, however, relentlessly unmasked the culture-destroying effect of war and stood up against the preparations for a new war after the suppression of the november revolution. Furthermore it is referred to the motives for the undiscriminating acceptance and support of fascist ideology by the majority of German physicians.

Prehistory, attendant circumstances, and consequences are scrutinised on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the first wide-ranging law on the treatment of the feeble-minded in France, forerunner of all subsequent laws on the matter.
The influence of alpha- and beta-receptor antagonists combined with drugs which act as antagonists at muscarinic and nicotinic receptor sites on epileptic focus produced by topic penicillin application was investigated. The beta-receptor blocking agent caused a faster and more intense activity of epileptogenic focus in comparison with activity in control animals, but the number of seizures decreased relatively for 25%. N-receptor antagonists diminished the facilitating effect of the beta-receptor antagonist on focal activity. Combination of m- and beta-receptor antagonists did not influence the spike activity of the focus. Treatment with alpha-receptor antagonists enhanced spikes and number of seizures only insignificantly. The combination of alpha- and n-receptor blocking substances does not influence the development of the epileptic process. The alpha-receptor antagonist together with the m-receptor blocking drug induces a facilitation of spike activity.

Implantation of cobalt-agar rods into the visual cortex of 16 adult rats induced in some of the animals epileptiform bioelectrical activity and provoked in all of them histological and histochemical changes in the region of the implantation (primary focus) as well as in some ipsilateral projection sites of the visual cortex (secondary foci). The changes within the secondary foci are demonstrated in the Corpus geniculatum laterale, pars dorsale (dLGN), by means of 18 histochemical and 5 histological methods. Together with the appearance of hyperactive and degenerating neurones combined with neuronophagy and diminution of the number of synapses a marked gliosis developed, especially an increase of microglia. The destruction of the tissue induced a depression of energy and transmitter metabolism and intensified lytic processes. This is confirmed by the decreased activities of LDH, SDH, GPDH, G6PDH, NAD(P)H-TR, GABA-T and GDH and the increased activity of acid phosphatase in the neuropil of the secondary foci. Single hyperactive nerve and glial cells were accented by high activities of those enzymes which had a reduced activity in the neuropil. Since in our experiments agar-rods without cobalt never induced histological or histochemical changes in subcortical grisea of the visual system, the secondary foci seem to result from the direct influence of the cobalt, migrating in the corticothalamic projection pathway and identifiable in the dLGN by the TIMM technique.
It is reported on the most important disease as a sequel of the intake of central-effective pharmaca (sedatives, hypnotics antiepileptics, analgesics and psychopharmaca). Psychopathological and neurological syndromes are described in detail.

The effects of a short-time serial stimulation of the locus coeruleus (LC) on cobalt-induced focal epileptiform activity were investigated in unrestrained rats with chronically implanted electrodes. The results show a marked reduction of the spike-wave activity immediately after stimulation. The characteristic groups of "cobalt-spikes" are completely suppressed within 30 s and significantly reduced up to 120 s. This suppression was partly antagonized by pretreatment with the beta-receptor antagonist propranolol (2-5 mg/kg i.p.). On the other hand, the stimulation of other areas, lateral or medial of the LC (n. parabrachialis; stratum griseum centrale), reduced the spike-discharges only insignificantly. These data support the hypothesis that the noradrenergic system play an important inhibitory role in epileptiform activity.
