[Treatment of uremic hypogonadism with parlodel].

Signs of hypogonadism and an elevated prolactin level (EPL) were found in the blood serum of 12 men and 9 women with different stages of chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) as compared to 20 healthy persons. The treatment with parlodel, a EPL secretion inhibitor, at a dose of 2.5-7.5 mg a day for 1-6.5 mos raised potency in 10 men, brought the sperm composition to normal in 5. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding was cut short in 4 women, the menstrual cycle was resumed in 3, the absence of any effect was noted in 2. The EPL level decreased significantly in all the patients. The results of the parlodel therapy of uremic hypogonadism were discussed with respect to CRI gravity and duration and the time period of a therapeutic course. Problems concerning the pathogenesis of uremic hypogonadism were considered.

Enhancement of DMBA induced mammary tumours by intermittent whole body hyperthermia (42 degrees C).

Wistar Female rats bearing DMBA induced mammary tumours were subjected to whole body hyperthermia 42 degrees C dry heat exposure for 15 minutes daily for 6 weeks. The control group was maintained at a room temperature of 25 degrees C. Hyperthermia induced significant growth stimulation of breast tumour compared to the controls. Plasma estradiol was slightly decreased while total T4 and TSH values remained unchanged in heat stressed rats. Plasma prolactin was significantly increased together with enhanced synthetic activity of pituitary prolactin cells. It is concluded that heat acting as stressor accelerates breast tumor growth, probably by influencing synthesis of prolactin. Therefore the hormone dependency of tumours should be considered before hyperthermia is used as an anticancer modality.

[Role of prolactin in the development of mammary gland tumors induced by dimethylbenzanthracene].

The action of high prolactin content on dimethylbenzanthracene-induced mammary carcinoma was studied in rats with varying bodily content of estrogens. It was found that the high content of endogenous prolactin in rats provoked by ligation of the hypophyseal peduncle or aminazin injection stimulates the development of dimethylbenzanthracene-induced carcinoma even in the presence of the lowered estrogenic content. Ovarectomy dramatically reduced the effect of hypophyseal peduncle ligation. Combined action of estrogens and prolactin is conducive to the development of hormone dependent mammary carcinoma. The role of hormones in the pathogenesis of mammary carcinoma and approaches to its prevention and choice of an adequate treatment are discussed.

[Development of a transplantable mammary gland cancer in rats at different thyroid hormone levels].

In experiments on female rats of various age the authors studied the effect of thyroid hormones on the growth of the mammary gland transplantable cancer. In young animals the percentage of spontaneous tumor regression and the survival were found to increase with age, synchronously with a rise in blood thyroxine level. Injection of thyroxine in a dose of 5 mkg into 2-month old animals induces marked inhibition of the growth, and in later terms a complete tumor regression in 78% of cases. In thyroidectomized rats a rapid tumor growth was terminated by death in all animals of this series. It is the authors' opinion that thyroid hormones stimulate the transplantation immunity, correct the functioning of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-genital system.

[Relationship between androgenization and differentiation of hypothalamic centers].

Dependence of the sterilizing action of androgen on differentiation of the hypothalamic centers was studied during the postnatal development of female rats. Asynhronous differentiation in the development of the arcuate nucleus (tonic centre) and suprachiasmatic nucleus (cyclic centre) was observed. Neurocytes of the arcuate nucleus started to produce secretory granules in 20-day embryos, while in the suprachiasmatic nucleus the neurocytes with secretory granules appeared in 5--7-day rats. Injection of testosterone propionate induced an anovulatory cycle in females the first 7 days after birth; this is associated with the inhibition of development of the hypothalamic cyclic centre.
