The impaired evacuation from the stomach stump was observed in 69 of 331 patients subjected to resection of the stomach for gastro-duodenal ulcer. For the recognition of functional and mechanical causes of disturbances in the evacuation the author proposed a table of general differential diagnostic signs made on the basis of clinical, phonographic and X-ray examinations as well as on the efficiency of the conservative treatment. The author believes that the use of phonography of the abdominal cavity gives better chances for determining the causes of the disturbed evacuation from the stomach stump in the nearest days after resection.

Phonography of the abdominal cavity has been applied in 115 patients before and after stomach resection. This method provides an additional valuable information, helps to establish a correct diagnosis and so it can be recommended as an auxilliary diagnostic method. For diagnostic purposes the phonography findings should be evaluated within the complex of clinical, X-ray and laboratory findings, and data provided by other investigations.
The author used the method of abdominal phonography to study the motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract after resection of the stomach for carcinoma and also to determine the degree of the effect of different stages of the operation and of its volume upon the motor function in 88 patients. Diagnostic laparotomy was carried out in 41 patients. The phonography findings showed postoperative depression of gastrointestinal motor function in the most of cases within the first days after operation.
