Effect of conditioning with fluoride and phosphoric acid on enamel surfaces as evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and fluoride incorporation.

The etching effect of 50% H-3PO-4 applied together with 2% NaF or SnF-2 was compared with the effect of H-3PO-4 on pre- and postfluoridated enamel by scanning electron microscopy. Substantial etching of enamel resulted with use of 50% H-3PO-4 with 2% NaF. High fluoride incorporation in the surface provided additional protection of the conditioned enamel.

Predisposition to caries in hamsters following the Erosire effect of a commercial citrus beverage administered with and without supplemental fluoride.

A study was undertaken to investigate the effect of a citrus beverage on tooth erosion and predisposition to caries in hamster molars, and to determine if a supplement of 1.9 ppm fluoride to the beverage influences these systems. Results suggest that enamel erosion is a predisposing factor. The addition of physiological fluoride protects the enamel from erosion and caries.

Residual fluoride concentrations and scanning electron microscopic examination of root surfaces of human teeth after topical application of fluoride in vivo.

Fluoride concentrations in root surfaces of human teeth after a single topical application with a 2% acidulated sodium fluoride solution in vivo were investigated. Increased residual fluoride concentrations in the root surfaces and precipitations on the peritubular dentin, as revealed by SEM micrographs, may be factors in reducing hypersensitivity.

Effect of brushing the teeth with a fluoride-containing and fluoridefree dentifrice on the gingiva of dogs.

The effect of brushing the teeth with a fluoride-containing or fluoridefree dentifrice on gingivitis induced by a soft diet was studied in four dogs. Changes in the gingival status were recorded at different stages of the experiment by the gingival indexes, which are a reflection of the external appearance, and by the amount of gingival fluid that is influenced by the pocket depth. The two factors appeared to be directly related although the range of the gingival index was much narrower than that of the amount of gingival fluid. No evident retardation in the improvement of the gingival condition occurred after brushing the teeth with a dentifrice that contained fluoride as compared with using a fluoridefree dentifrice or saline.

Effect of amine fluoride subgingival irrigation on periodontally diseased sites.

Amine fluoride gel, a surfactant and bactericidal compound was tested for irrigation of periodontal sites in inflammatory periodontal disease. Eight volunteer-patients who had at least 4 sites with probing depths of 6 mm or more in two different quadrants participated in the study. The start of the study was preceded by supragingival scaling. At the selected sites clinical (PI, GI, BOP, probing attachment) and microbial examinations (percentage motile rods and spirochetes) were performed at baseline, 30, 60 and 9 days. Irrigation with AmF gel and saline was performed at experimental and control sites twice weekly during one month. The mean Plaque Index, bleeding on probing and percentage mobile rods and spirochetes, at baseline, were not significantly different between the experimental and control groups, where as the mean gingival index and probing attachment were significantly different. There were decreases in the Plaque and Gingival Indexes, bleeding on probing, percentage motile rods and spirochetes and gain in probing attachment in both experimental and control groups during the test period of 60 days. However, these improvements from baseline values to the periods of 30, 60 and 90 days between the treatment and control groups were not significant. Although mean improvements of the parameters examined were greater in the experimental group, this was probably due to higher baseline values in this group.
