Addition of fluoride compounds to acrylic resin plates: bending strength and fluoride release.

The effect of incorporated CaF2 (2.04%), NaF (2.27%) and amine fluoride (0.71%) in acrylic resin plates, on bending strength and fluoride release by rinsing and immersion in synthetic saliva, was determined. Bending strength was reduced by 6.7, 9.5 and 20% respectively. The most elevated release of fluoride from the NaF containing--and the most protracted from the CaF2 containing--plates may be related to the solubilities of the compounds. It appears that the organic molecule of the AmF compound affects the strength of the acrylic plates most significantly. The F- concentrations released in the in vitro rinsing experiment may be presumed to occur in vivo at some higher level due to the larger size of dental appliances.

Fluoride concentrations in fissure and cervical enamel of unerupted human teeth.

Fluoride concentration of fissure enamel from unerupted third molars was higher than that of the cervical-lingual but not cervical-buccal surfaces at a similar depth of the removed enamel. The highest fluoride concentration was found in the fissure enamel due probably to its earlier formation, higher permeability and embedding tissue before eruption.

Dental Enamel↗

Fluroide concentration in enamel treated with 50% phosphoric acid and NaF with subsequent decalcification in "acid-gel".

Fluoride concentration of enamel surfaces treated with 50% H3PO4, together with high NaF contents or etched with 50% H3PO4 followed by application with a water solution of high NaF content, was examined. In addition, the degree of decalcification and the fluoride content of subsequently incubated enamel samples in acid-gel at 37 degrees C were determined. Generally, incubation highly increased the fluoride contents of the etched and fluoridated (experimental), control (etched only), and untreated (vaseline) enamel samples. An increasing demineralization effect was observed in the samples of the following order: experimental, control, and baseline. It appears does not predispose to an increased caries challenge in vitro.

The effect of toothbrushing with a fat-containing toothpaste on food debris.

The effect of a toothpaste containing mineral fat (paraffin oil) on the accumulation of food debris was evaluated in 17 adults. Food debris indices were scored during 3 weeks. A significant lower food debris index was detected in the subject group brushing their teeth with the paste containing mineral fat as compared with the fat-free paste or water. From a clinical standpoint the results do not appear to be all that different from each other.

Tensile strength of the bond between resin to enamel etched with phosphoric acid containing fluoride.

The tensile bond strength of Epoxylite 9075 and Enamelite to enamel treated with NaF and SnF2, at two concentrations, in the etching acid (H3PO4) was determined. The average fracture stress of those samples in which fracture occurred in the resin only, may be considered as the tensile strength of the resin, 69.8 +/- 5.6 kg/cm2. The mean fracture stresses of the Epoxy 9075 systems etched with pure phosphoric acid or with acid solutions containing 0.5% F salts were significantly higher than those treated with acid solutions containing 2% F salts. Incorporation of NaF or SnF2 in the etching solutions highly increased the fluoride concentration of enamel. The fluoride increase dependend on the fluoride concentration of the etching solution and was greater for NaF than SnF2.

Effect of toothbrushing with a fluoride-free and fluoride-containing dentifrice on oral hygiene and number of leukocytes in the gingival fluid.

The number of leukocytes in the gingival exudate and the oral hygiene index during toothbrushing with a fluoride-free and fluoride-containing dentifrice was investigated in humans during a 3-month period. Significant correlations existed between the average number of leukocytes in the gingival exudate and the oral hygiene indices. The number of leukocytes increased significantly during the period of toothbrushing with the Fluoride dentifrice, whereas in the OHI no change was evident.

Dentifrices↗

In vitro evaluation of enamel and cementum abrasion after toothbrushing.

Abrasion in human teeth brushed with toothbrush and dentifrice was evaluated quantitatively by SEM. Specimens which included surface enamel and cementum were cut from unerupted wisdom teeth. Controlled brushing was carried out by a brushing machine, with dentifrice or saline, for periods of five and ten minutes. Scratches were counted using SE micrographs. No scratches were observed on the enamel surfaces, due probably to its hardness. The cementum surfaces revealed scratches, the number increasing with the duration of burshing. Brushing with saline was much less abrasive than with dentifrice. It was concluded that damage to the cementum is caused primarily by the dentifrice, brushing per se being a minor factor.

New chemotherapeutic agent for root canal treatment. A preliminary electron microscopic study on an in vivo and in vitro endodontically treated tooth.

A preliminary in vivo and in vitro electron microscopic study of root canals treated endodontically with EDTA-C and Salvizol proved the latter to be superior as a chemomechanical and irrigation solution, especially in the apical third of the roots. A further virtue of Salvizol, as has been demonstrated, is its capability to dissolve the organic matrix of dentin, thus exposing the mineralizing front and the patent tubules even in the apical third of the canal. The combined properties of Salvizol which introduce it as a chemotherapeutic agent for endodontics are: (1) broad spectrum of bactericidal activity, (2) ability to dissolve calcium, (3) neutral pH, (4) cleansing potency, and (5) biologic compatibility.
