Cell surface hydrophobicity of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans Y4.

Oral bacteria colonize the dento-gingival tissues in a selective manner. Hydrophobic reactions have been suggested as one of the major mechanisms of adhesion. Hydrophobicity of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans Y4 (Aa) cells was studied in vitro using adherence to the liquid hydrocarbon, octane. Adherence of Aa cells to octane varied from 60-90%, depending on the medium in which they were grown, age of the culture and the buffer in which the assay was carried out. These data suggest that Aa is a hydrophobic bacterium, the hydrophobicity of which is expressed to a varying degree, and may have a rôle in its adherence to oral tissues.

Separation of amphipathic proteins based on adsorption to hexadecane:water interfaces.

A method is proposed for the relatively simple and rapid separation of amphipathic biopolymers, based on adsorption onto and desorption from the surface of hexadecane droplets. Adsorption to the hexadecane:water interface was carried out by mixing hexadecane with aqueous protein solutions at room temperature. Desorption was performed by consecutive solidification and melting of the liquid hydrocarbon (m.p. 18 degrees C), resulting in coalescence of the droplets and reappearance of the desorbed moiety in the bulk aqueous phase. Of interest was the observation that lysozyme remains enzymatically active following this procedure.

Prevalence of gestational and perinatal insults in brain-damaged children.

The value of utilizing the analysis of unusual dermatoglyphic patterns and of microscopic dental enamel abnormalities as nonspecific registers of fetal and perinatal insult was investigated in brain-damaged children. Positive findings were demonstrated in 82% of the brain-damaged group and in 17% of healthy controls (P less than 0.001). This confirms that most brain damage in children occurs during pregnancy. The limited correlation between recorded potential damaging events during pregnancy and the appropriate markers of fetal/perinatal insult suggests that the data available are inadequate for identifying the causes of brain damage. The implications of these observations are discussed with regard to determining the etiology of brain damage.

Professional socialization in dentistry: a longitudinal analysis of changes in students' expected professional rewards.

In this continuing longitudinal study on professional socialization of dental students, further analysis of the changes occurring in their attitudes towards the chosen profession is carried out. Although students' basic norms and values remained generally unchanged over time, disillusionment set in with regard to most of the expected professional rewards, in particular the anticipated 'intellectual challenge'. Unlikely, medical students who served as a comparison showed greatest disparity between expectation at admission and at graduation with regard to the economic side of their profession ('high income' and 'job security'). In spite of the growing cynicism of dental students throughout the years of education, apparent in the steady increase in expectations of extrinsic rewards and decreases in expectations of intrinsic rewards, these changes may be only situational in nature, for the same group of graduates showed a return to a more idealistic outlook of their profession 8 years post-graduation.

Microbial contamination by a medical carbon dioxide laser.

One of the advantages in using the carbon dioxide laser in medicine is the sterilization of the wound at the site of surgical intervention. In microbial studies, using the Sharplan Model 743 Medical Laser, we found substantial contamination of the area directly below the probe by viable bacteria and fungi. The levels of contamination varied from experiment to experiment, but were always substantial. The contamination is likely due to the stream of nitrogen gas emitted during and following laser irradiation in order to cool the lens. Following the implementation of several simple prophylactic procedures, including insertion of a filter on the end of the tube emitting the nitrogen gas, contamination by the gas stream was reduced to insignificant levels.
