[Intracutaneous and subcutaneous cavernous hemangioma. Conservative and surgical therapy (author's transl)].

Hemangioma are the most frequently occurring benign tumors in infants and children. Current therapeutical recommendations are discussed on the basis of observations on 1015 patients of this age group who were treated at the Childrens' Surgical Hospital in Munich from 1956 to 1976. Intervention during the first three months of life is indicated for intracutaneous hemangioma in the ano-genital area as well as for subcutaneous and pedunculated forms. Starting at walking age, prominent tumors of the pilose scalp and lid hemangioma should be excised. In all other forms, spontaneous remission, which usually occurs after 3 to 4 years, should be waited for. Appropriate guidance of parents is necessary in this case. We advise against irradiation of hemangioma.

[Treatment of burn contractures (author's transl)].

Serious deformation and complete loss of function are not uncommon sequelae of an insufficient treatment of thermic, chemical or electric injuries to the hand. In order to reconstruct the shape or function of the hand once contractures are present, it is necessary to excise the scars completely, and follow with a skin-graft. For this purpose, transposition flaps, free skin grafts and Z-plasty may be considered. Particular importance is attached to an extensive splint therapy, by means of which late results can be improved.

Long-term results in surgical treatment of cleft lips and palates.

Of a total of 3681 operations for hare lip and cleft palate, 139 patients operated between 1951 and 1975 were compared with the aid of exact measurements of the impressions to ascertain whether early orthodontic treatment had an influence on the growing maxilla. 49% of 200 patients who were followed up had normal speach, 39% had minimal disturbances of articulation, in 12% of the patients the speach was poor. In 13 out of 16 of these patients pharyngoplasty improved the speach.

[Growth and growth hormone in children with congenital lip and palatal clefts].

In order to investigate the correlation supposed between cleft lip and palate of children and growth hormone deficiency we determined the amount of growth hormone in the blood serum of 199 children with cleft lip and palate and partly with other additional diseases. In contrast to a previous result we could not find a significant relation between the cleft-syndrome and growth hormone deficiency. All patients had a normal and sufficient concentration of the hormone. As result of our work we propose to determine the hormone concentration only in those cases in which less growth is observed too.
