[Crime as the 1st symptom of schizophrenia. Psychopathological analysis].

One case of paranoid schizophrenia which for a long period remained latent is reported. The first manifest symptoms of the disease resulted in crime. The importance of the observation of the premorbid personality and detailed psychopathological analysis of it especially in forensic psychiatry are stressed. The basic task of the expert is to disclose the diagnosis of the mental illness. To reveal the relationship between the disease and the crime committed-which is the bases of the experts conclusion- all the circumstances of the crime should be considered. In the case reported the crime itself has had marks of insanity.

[Effect of dexamethasone on the ultrastructure of the myocardium in experimental hemorrhagic shock].

Authors studied the ultrastructure of the myocardium of rats treated with Dexamethasone in experimental haemorrhagic shock of 2.5 hours duration. The perfusion was performed on the Langendorff cannula. After preliminary treatment with Dexamethasone no characteristic morphological picture of the shock developed, but a marked accumulation of glycogen was observed. Authors believe that morphological pictures unambiguously evidence the anti-shock effect of Dexamethasone.

Effect of hemorrhagic shock on the performance, O2-consumption, and ultrastructure of isolated rat hearts.

Rat hearts were isolated from control animals anesthetized and sham treated for 2.5 hours and following 2.5 hours of hemorrhagic hypotension and they were perfused by modified Langendorff technique. Hearts isolated following hemorrhagic hypotension exhibited increased coronary resistance, depressed left ventricular mechanical performance, and significantly increased sensitivity to threefold elevation of perfusate Ca2+ (from 1.3 to 3.9 mM). Electron microscopic examination showed increased permeability of the plasma membrane for lanthanum, zonal lesions of contractile filaments, damage of mitochondria, and dilation of T-tubules and sarcoplasmic reticulum. Experimental results indicate that myocardial damage is of hypoxic/ischemic origin during the procedure used as a model for shock. Mechanical failure of postoligemic hearts may be caused by the combination of zonal lesions of the myofilaments, damage of energy production, and impairment of cellular calcium metabolism.

Ultrastructure and localization of calcium in uterine smooth muscle.

General ultrastructure and subcellular calcium localization was studied in the longitudinal muscle layer of the rabbit's post partum myometrium by means of the lead acetate and potassium pyroantimonate cytochemical techniques. The finding of abundant surface vesicles (SV) and intracellular tubules of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER), their close contacts in some parts of the fibre, and the isolated compartment between plasma membrane (PM) and basal membrane (BM) may be important in the understanding of characteristic features of excitation-contraction coupling in this tissue. In the resting fibre (Mn2+-induced relaxation) the lead acetate and pyroantimonate reaction product was localized in the PM, SV, SER and mitochondria (M), indicating the possible in situ Ca-sequestering properties of the above structures. Tissues fixed at the peak of K+-contraction revealed abundant precipitates in the cytoplasm, while little reaction product was seen at the periphery of the fibre. The specificity of the cytochemical reactions was verified by Ca-extraction EGTA in situ (lead acetate) and by electronprobe X-ray microanalysis (pyroantimonate). These findings indicate that redistribution of the precipitate during the contraction-relaxation cycle is the result of intracellular calcium translocation in the rabbit myometrium.

[Electron microscopic study of the myocardium in cyanide poisoning].

Effect of the KCN poisoning on the cardiac muscle was studied by the aid of electron microscopic cytochemical methods. The early lesions revealed were: alterations in the region of the Z-lines, "septum formation" in the mitochondria, crystolysis, enlargment of the sarcotubules. Later destruction of the thick and thin filaments alteration of the intercalar discs were observed. Activity of the succinate-dehydrogenase and cytochromoxydase decreased. Authors emphasize the non-specific character of the alterations described.

Ultrastructural changes in the rat cerebellar cortex during methionine sulphoximine convulsions.

The ultrastructure of the rat cerebellar cortex and the activity of succinic dehydrogenase were examined during methionine sulphoximine (MSO)-provoked convulsions. The animals were killed 3, 6 and 12 hours after the injection of 600 mg/kg of MSO. Convulsions appeared 4--5 hours, status epilepticus developed 8-9 hours after the injection. Progressive ischaemic changes of Purkinje cells could be observed, with condensation of the nucleus and a density of the cytoplasmic matrix. The cisternae of the Golgi complex and endoplasmic reticulum showed some degree of dilation. The basis of Purkinje cells was surrounded by distorted axons and terminals that had lost in most cases the synaptic vesicles, and by clear spaces due to the swollen glial processes. Three to six hours after MSO injection, succinic dehydrogenase activity increased in the mitochondria of Purkinje cells. After the appearance of seizures the enzyme activity decreased. Twelve hours after the injection the enzyme activity recovered to a certain extent.

Comparative polarized-light and electron microscopic studies of changes in the structure of the intercalate disc following various experimental lesions.

The intercalate disc was studied following various traumatizing interference (cyanide, carbon monoxide poisoning, intermittent coronary perfusion, nitrogen perfusion, intermittent hypoxic loading, direct electric trauma). The most frequent alterations were the separation, vesicular transformation and loss of electron-dense material of the fascia adherens and occludens of the junctions. In extreme situations the lysis of filaments joining to the junctions and the rupture of the membrane was observed. Total desintegration of the intercalate disc was rarely encountered probably due to the high adhesive capacity of desmosomes. Topooptical reactions were found suitable to detect functional changes.

[Myocardial necrosis in acute carbon monoxide poisoning].

Two cases of carbonmonoxid poisoning--of young males--are described. In the absence of any coronary disorders--after a long CO exposition--necrosis of the papillary muscles have been revealed. Correlations of CO poisoning and myocardial ischaemia are discussed.
