The transplantability of small implants such as 10 cells of Yoshida ascites hepatoma AH109A, which grew lethally only in 2 out of 19 rats when transplanted subcutaneously, was improved by admixed implantation of attenuated tumor cells prepared with mitomycin C, presenting lethal take in 23 out of 27 animals. Similar effect was also obtained by liver homogenate or sonicated tumor cell suspension. Although the rate of tumor "take" of less than 10(3) cells of AH109A inoculated in the subcutis increased by admixing the attenuated cells, growth characteristics of such a small implant of the tumor, once initiated, were not significantly different whether inoculated with or without the attenuated cells. Growth support effect of attenuated cells was discussed in relation with either the size of inoculum or growth ability of tumor cells.
This study was undertaken to find out some clue to detect early relapse of adult acute leukemia which had been in remission. Laboratory data such as LDH, erythrocyte sedimentation, or immunoglobulin level did not show any difference at the time of relapse from the remission period. Complete blood count with reticulocyte count was evaluated every two weeks retrospectively for 12 weeks before relapse. No significant change was observed at the time of relapse. However, both the percentage and absolute number of peripheral lymphocytes significantly increased, whereas percentages of both T and B cells markedly decreased at the time of relapse, suggesting some derangement of lymphocyte function. Results in bone marrow culture did not yield any remarkable difference. It was suggested from this study that it is the time of prerelapse of adult acute leukemia when lymphocytes show an increase in either percentage or absolute number in the patients who are followed under their maintenance therapy schedule.
A new type of rat transparent chamber was developed to measure the microvascular pressure. One side of this chamber consists of an airtight space, covered with a thin plastic membrane, through which either normal or tumor microvascular pressure was measured. The microvascular pressure in tumor tissue was usually lower than that in normal subcutis. When the systemic blood pressure was elevated by continuous infusion of angiotensin II, the microvascular pressure in tumor increased markedly. The results are discussed in correlation with the mechanism of enhanced chemotherapeutic effect in cancer by angiotensin II.

Elevation of the mean arterial blood pressure to approximately 150 mmHg by infusion of angiotensin II resulted in an approximate 5.7-fold selective increase in blood flow in tumor tissue without increasing blood flow in normal tissue. This finding of no autoregulation of blood flow in tumor tissue was made in an experiment on inbred DONRYU rats with sc transplanted AH109A solid tumors (Yoshida ascites hepatoma). Changes in tissue blood flow were measured by a thermoelectrical method. In another experiment in which DONRYU rats with sc transplanted AH272 solid tumors were used, the chemotherapeutic effect of mitomycin C on main tumors and lymph node metastatic foci was markedly enhanced in rats with angiotensin-induced hypertension, as compared to its effect in rats without angiotensin-induced hypertension. Thus a new approach to cancer chemotherapy has been demonstrated in which the delivery to tumor tissue of systemically administered anticancer drugs can be selectively enhanced.

We present 22 cases with inter-sterno-costoclavicular ossification. Clinical and pathological findings show that abnormal ossification observed in this situation is due to non-suppurative chronic inflammation of the soft tissues around the sterno-costo-clavicular region such as the costo-clavicular ligament. We have classified X-ray findings into three stages according to the extent of the ossification; localized, generalized, and hyperostotic, and show that the disease progressed in this sequence. A considerable number of the patients showed abnormal X-ray findings in the spine or the sacro-iliac joint. Frequent association of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris was noted in this disease. Most of the cases were treated effectively with anti-inflammatory drugs, but a few cases required surgical resection of the ossified mass with the clavicle or the first rib in order to relieve the severe pain.

Low concentration (0.1--1 mM) of ascorbate and erythorbate (isoascorbate) caused lipid peroxidation and lysosome labilization ("cofactor" action). In addition, they acted additively on microsomal NADPH oxidase-induced lipid peroxidation at the low concentration. The "cofactor" action, however, was dependent reciprocally on the density of lysosomes; the more dilute was the lysosomal fraction, the more susceptible the lysosomes were. On the other hand, ascorbate and erythorbate at concentration more than 1 mM inhibited microsomal NADPH oxidase-induced lipid peroxidation and lysosome labilization. Their antioxidant effect was revealed to be clear especially when the "cofactor" action was eliminated by such a basic protein as protamine. Considering that the "cofactor" action was observed only at the lower density of lysosomes and might be inhibited by physiologically occurring basic proteins, ascorbate and erythorbate may mostly act as antioxidant on lysosomes in vivo. Ascorbate- or erythorbate- induced lysosome labilization was certified to be mediated by lipid peroxidation.
