[Effect of light regimens on the age dynamics of estrous function and serum prolactin level in rats].

The effect of different light regimens (standard 12 h. light : 12 h. darkness LD; 24-hour constant light LL, light deprivation DD, natural light regimen of the North-West of Russia NL) on the age dynamics of estrous function and on the serum prolactin in female LIO rats has been studied for two years. The rats were maintained at the one of above-mentioned regimes from the age of 25 days. The cytological monitoring of the estrous cycle was conducted every three months. The level of prolactin was studied at the age of 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. It has been found out that the regimen of constant light (LL) and the spring-summer period lead to earlier maturation, premature age-related changes of the rats' estrous cycle and to the increase of the level of serum prolactin in comparison with those in rats kept at the LD regimen. Light deprivation (DD) leads to the opposite changes. It has been noted that the exposure to constant light during the whole year is accompanied by more expressed and earlier developed age-related changes of estrous cycle in comparison with the natural light of the North-West of Russia with its peculiar year photoperiodicity (short day in autumn-winter period and white nights in spring-summer period).

[Influence of light regimens, melatonin, and epitalon on amylase activity in the pancreas and small intestine in rats of different age].

The study shows that keeping rats in different light modes has a different impact on pancreatic and intestine amylase activity and has its peculiarities in regard of age as well as geroprotectors' influence on it. Melatonin use entails pancreatic amylase activity increase in mature animals in natural light of the North-West of Russia (NL) and 24-hour constant light (LD) and on the contrary amylase activity drops in case of using epitalon. Simultaneously, the enzyme activity in young and old rats under LD, melatonin and epitalon decreases. Intestine amylase activity influenced by both preparations rises in NL and drops in LD mode with respect to the control group.

[Effect of age, different light conditions, melatonin, and epitalon on lysosomal proteinase activity in the liver and kidneys of rats].

Ageing, melatonin, epithalon (tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) and different light conditions effects on protein content and cathepsins B and D activities in rat liver and kidneys lysosomal fractions were studied. Ageing leads to decrease of cathepsins activity in rat liver lysosomal fractions. Constant light and darkness conditions result in earlier age decline of cathepsins activity. Absence of day and night succession in comparison with alternating light conditions causes decline of both general and specific cathepsin D activity. Melatonin and epithalon administration resulted in decrease of cathepsin D activity in liver only under control interchangeable light conditions. Cathepsin B activity in liver and kidneys lysosomal fractions declined in all experimental light conditions. Cathepsins activity decrease under the influence of epiphysial factors is evidently connected with their inhibitory effect on protein and general metabolism.

[Age related changes in rat blood leucocyte count and morpho-metrical parameters of large granular lymphocytes under different light regimens].

The effect of different light conditions on the age related level of blood leucocytes, leucocytes differential count and the morpho-metrical parameters of large granular lymphocytes in rats was investigated. It has been found that the senescent animals demonstrate disturbance in typical lymphocytes/ neutrophils ratio under condition with light and darkness changes natural and regular illumination. The total leucocytes number, the level of neutrophilic bands, eosynophils and large granular lymphocytes increased under continuous light illumination and natural photoperiod in Karelia. The comparatively lower level of lymphocytes and higher of neutrophils was formed earlier under light conditions without light and dark interchange, i.e. under long time light deprivation (DP) and under constant illumination (LL).

[Effect of pyracetam on fatigue of inspiratory muscles in cats].

The aim of the work was to study the influence of pyracetam on respiratory muscles fatigue and ventilatory disorders caused by inspiratory resistive load in cats. The experiments have show that after the use of pyracetam in conditions of fatigue total bioelectric activities of inspiratory muscles and of the phrenic nerve and transdiaphragmal pressure restore; duty cycle, respiratory rate and tidal volume per minute decrease. The conclusion is drawn that pyracetam in the dose 300 mg/kg, in intravenous administration, compensates inspiratory muscle fatigue at the expense of its central mechanism of action.

[Ethimizol impact on the fatigue of the inspiratory muscles].

The aim of the study was assessment of ethimizol effects on fatigue of respiratory muscles and ventilatory disorders caused by inspiratory resistive load on respiration. Cat experiments showed that administration of ethimizol in inspiratory fatigue reestablishes total bioelectric activity of the inspiratory muscles and diaphragmatic nerve, diminishes useful respiratory cycle and respiration rate. Thus, ethimizol in a 1 mg/kg dose i.v. compensates inspiratory muscular fatigue via central mechanism of action.

[Effect of aminophylline on fatigue of inspiratory muscles].

Effect of aminophylline on the fatigue of inspiratory muscles and ventilation disorders induced by respiratory resistive load was studied in cats. The administration of aminophylline on the background of inspiratory fatigue increases transdiaphragm pressure, restores bioelectric activity of inspiratory muscles and phrenic nerve, and decreases the respiratory duty cycle and rate. It is concluded that aminophylline in a dose of 24 mg/kg (i.v.) is capable of compensating the inspiratory muscle fatigue via both central and peripheral mechanisms, the latter effect being probably of greater importance.

[Comparative study of the effects of melatonin and epitalon on the protracted memory under the shuttle labyrinth test conditions in rats in the course of aging].

The influence of the chronic administration of melatonin (epiphyseal hormone) and epitalon (a synthetic tetrapeptide increasing melatonin production) on the learning process and the protracted memory has been studied in LIO rats in the course of aging for 2 years under standard illumination regime (12L :12D). The daily administration of melatonin (Sigma, USA) with drinking water (in 10 mg/liter dose at night) in rats beginning with the age of 4 months did not influence the learning processes in young and adult animals but it was found to contribute to optimization of the brain cognitive function in rats in the course of aging, by improving the protracted memory process. Epitalon administered in a daily dose of 0.1 microg per animal beginning with the age of 4 months showed mnemotropic properties (decreasing the extent of memory disorders) in old rats under conditions of the shuttle labyrinth test.

[The pharmacological correction of respiratory musculature fatigue].

The effect of drugs (ATP, dibasol, corglycon, prednisolone, pyracetam, ethymysol, and aminophylline) on contractility of the diaphragm and the parameters of external respiration in inspiratory fatigue was studied. Total bioelectric activity of the diaphragm, transdiaphragmatic pressure, respiratory rate, tidal volume, and duty cycle were recorded in 160 anesthetized cats. Administration of the drugs under study normalized to a different measure the parameters of external respiration and improved contractility of the diaphragm in inspiratory fatigue. Aminophylline, pyracetam, corglycon, and ATP possessed the highest activity.
