[Changes in the blood surface-active properties during the correction of hemorheological disorders in patients with occlusive lesions of the abdominal aorta and arteries of the extremities].

Significant hemorheologic disorders were demonstrated in 68 patients with Leriche's syndrome and 50 patients with Raynaud's disease, as compared to 42 normal controls. Plasma and erythrocyte membrane surface tension (ST) was measured, using a surface balance, in 29 patients with Leriche's syndrome, 26 patients with Raynaud's disease and 24 normal subjects. In both kinds of vascular abnormality, major parameters of erythrocyte membrane adsorption film ST remained unchanged, yet the areas of their adsorption hysteresis loops increased. In patients with Raynaud's disease, the minimal plasma ST increased, while the stability index and the hysteresis loop area declined. In patients with Leriche's syndrome, those were unchanged. The control of hemorheologic disorders by moderate hemodilution using albumin, rheopolyglucin, antiaggregants and fibrinolytic agents resulted in the normalization of plasma ST parameters in Raynaud's disease, and a greater hysteresis loop area in both kinds of vascular disease. Major parameters of erythrocyte membrane adsorption film ST remained unchanged, while the area of their hysteresis loops decreased.

[Changes in the pulmonary surfactant system during and after prolonged starvation].

In experiments on 76 white rats, a complex of physical and morphological techniques was used to study the state of the lung surfactant system in varying time after complete starvation and a possibility of its recovery with large doses of vitamin A. 4--5 day starvation without water restriction induced a significant decrease in surfactant secretion and diminution of its content in the alveolar lining. The intracellular reserves of the surfactant got recovered 4 weeks after the starvation was discontinued but the surface activity of the alveolar lining did not yet return to the initial level. Supplementary administration of large doses of vitamin A to rats by mouth after discontinuance of starvation led in two weeks to normalization of all the parameters characterizing the state of the lung surfactant system.

[Effect of the main components of blood on pulmonary surfactant].

The effect of the main blood constituents on surface activity of substrates containing pulmonary surfactant has been investigated. Mixing of hemolysate, serum, albumin, and fibrinogen with lung extracts and washings, their application in the form of a monolayer or administration into the hypophase of the washing monolayer raised the surface tension (ST) of these substrates. Hemoglobin, serum lipids and cholesterol exerted an opposite action. The contact of all above blood constituents, that elicited varied effects on the ST of the medium containing the surfactant with pulmonary vesicles led to an increase in their stability coefficient determined according to the method of Pattle.

[Surface activity of the extracts of the lungs and other organs].

Monomolecular surface films on the border-line of the "liquid-air" phases were observed to be formed in the water-saline extracts of the lungs and of the other organs. The surface films were compressed and extended on Wilhelmy's balance; the isotherm surface tension (ST)-square typical of the solutions of the surface-active materials (SAM) were recorded. Analogous curves with the minimum ST below 12 din/cm were recorded in testing the SAM monolayers placed on the liquid lining of the volatile solvent. Pulmonary surfactants differed from the SAM of other organs by the highest capacity to lower the ST in compression of the monolayer.

[Changes in surface-active properties of the lung after injection of isolated pancreatic islets into the pulmonary bed].

Injection of isolated pancreatic islets into the pulmonary vascular bed of rats was attended by increase of the insulin level on the 3rd and 7th day without changes of glycemia. The surface-active properties of the lung wash increased in this case, which is evidence of activation of secretion of the lung surfactant. The intracellular stores of the surfactant were not exhausted.

[Experimental edema and the activity of the pulmonary surfactant system during the suppression of prostaglandin synthesis].

Experiments on 23 white rats and 10 guinea pigs have shown that preliminarily indomethacin-induced inhibition of prostaglandins synthesis prevented development of pulmonary oedema, evoked by heterologous serum in rats and by vagotomy in guinea pigs. Fourfold infusion of indomethacin in experiments on 29 rats decreased extracellular fraction activity of the pulmonary surfactant and exhausted its cellular reserve.
