HLA typing was performed in 40 thyroid carcinoma patients. No association was found between antigens of the HLA system and papillary, follicular or medullary thyroid carcinomas. Literature reports on different HLA associations are probably due more to the small number of cases in the studies involved than to ethnic or geographic differences.
The pattern of gangliosides in membranes of erythrocytes was examined in healthy and in alcoholic subjects on the second and on the 28th day of detoxification therapy. The GM3 and GD3 fraction were decreased significantly in alcoholics on the 2nd day. After 4 weeks of abstinence all changes had returned to the level of healthy subjects.
An increased incidence of tumors and B-cell lymphomas development has been reported in persons with or at risk for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This report focuses on a 50-year-old homosexual man with HIV antibodies who met the established criteria for the diagnosis of multiple myeloma: an IgG monoclonal spike greater than 2 g/dl and a plasma cell count greater than 20% in the bone marrow aspirate. Serum protein immunoelectrophoresis showed monoclonal IgG kappa, and in the urine no excess of kappa chains was found. Laboratory data revealed a total IgG of 38 g/l, IgA of 5.2 g/l, and IgM of 2.3 g/l; the calcium level was normal; ESR was 119/130, and no plasmocytoid cells were seen in the differential count. No lytic lesions were found in the skeletal survey. The helper/suppressor T-cell ratio was depleted with 0.1 and HLA-DR was highly elevated with 56% in the immunofluorescent analysis. The development of the most differentiated B-cell tumor broadens the spectrum of B-cell neoplasias in patients with a predominant helper T-cell defect and focuses on the role of disordered immunoregulation and chronic antigenic stimulation in predisposing to B-cell malignant transformation associated with AIDS.

A patient with autoimmune hemolytic anemia of the warm antibody type developed a hyperacute hemolytic crisis with acute renal failure under conventional treatment with corticosteroids. Because of the life-threatening situation it was decided to start a combined treatment with immunosuppression and plasmapheresis. Already after the first plasma exchange the direct antiglobulin test became weakly positive, the hemoglobin level rose from 4.1 to 8.1 g/dl, and the hemolytic crisis subsided. Four more exchanges were performed; thereafter, the patient's clinical condition and laboratory data stabilized.

The present paper demonstrates some typical differences in drinking behaviour between female and male alcoholics. We investigated especially the difference in quantities of consumed pure alcohol. The ratio of the mean consumption per year by women and men was 1 : 1,9. The difference in due to differences in the drinking habits and a different alcoholic tolerance in both sexes. Generally we found that in both family and society alcohol abuse is less tolerated in women.
The frequency of cerebral cramp-seizures of alcoholics is higher as stated in literature. Alcoholics with a withdrawal syndrome are liable to cerebral cramp-seizures. A cerebral cramp-seizure indicates an unfavourable prognosis of the disease.
On the basis of material from the archiv of the district mental hospital Schwerin literary products of schizophrenic patients were examined and compared with the works of the primitives with the literature of manierism and "modern lyric".

The treatment of insane persons in the last century is briefly described. A more liberal and unrestrained treatment was introduced at the turn of the century, and chiefly agriculturally oriented insane asylums were established at that time. The question of persons trained to care for subjects afflicted with insanity was increasingly gaining in importance, and the aim was to have available a pool of skilled nursing personnel. Treatment by inducing artificial fever is outlined in addition to a brief description of a more activ treatment of patients by the Simon-Gütersloh method. In 1925, a "neuro-psychiatric dispensary" was established in the Soviet Union. Later, there were introduced such methods as insulin shock treatment and electroconvulsive therapy and, more recently, treatment with psychopharmaceuticals, the latter being drugs used in the treatment of emotional disorders in modern psychiatric hospitals. Inpatient and outpatient treatment is further developed with the establishment of day/night hospitals, and the need is pointed out to develop a system of care for mental patients on the model of that which exists in the Soviet Union.
