Influence of chin tap force and bite force parameters on the duration of the electromyographic silent period.

Controversy exists as to whether chin tap force and bite force affect the duration of the electromyographic silent period following the jaw jerk reflex during isometric contraction of the elevator muscles of the mandible. This study demonstrates that statistical trends exist showing increased silent period duration for increased tap forces and decreased silent period duration with increased bite forces.

Toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic studies of beryllium.

The question of dose-effect relations of berylliosis was examined by measuring the Be-concentration in blood and urine, as well as the immunological behaviour of T-lymphocytes for a group of occupationally exposed men (smaller than 8 ng Be/m3, 4-6 h daily) and a non-exposed control group. Normal values 1.0 +/- 0.4 ng Be/g(n=10) in blood and 0.9 +/- 0.5 ng Be/g(n=10) in urine were found by an optimized flameless atomic absorption spectrometry method. The corresponding values for the exposed group (n=8) showed a mean increase of a factor of 4. The preferential enrichment of Be in the prealbumin and in the nu-globulin fractions was determined by a preparative isotachophoretic column with physiological pH conditions, especially developed for this application. The Be-specific stimulation of the T-lymphocytes of the exposed group was increased significantly. In blood and urine samples of exposed (2-40 mg Be/m3 as Be(NO3)2) Wistar-rats and guinea pigs Be values up to 36 ng Be/g in serum and up to 300 ng Be/g in urine were determined. After Be exposure, guinea pig serum showed a significant increase in the nu-globulins after the isotachophoretical separation of the serum proteins, which could not be correlated with increased Be-levels in this fraction. 70% of the total Be(10-100 ng/g serum) were detected in the prealbumin, only about 1% in the nu-globulin fraction. The same results were found in serum samples with in vitro addition of Be. The lymphocyte transformation rates for the exposed animals were increased. Skin tests were found to be positive in 70% for exposed rats and in 50-70% for guinea pigs.

[Simple method for the preparation of haptoglobin].

The present paper deals with a method permitting the isolation of haptoglobin 2-2 from human serum or plasma. The haptoglobin is adsorbed to DEAE-cellulose at pH 5.1 by batching. The loaded cellulose is given into a column and the haptoglobin eluted by a 0.1 M to 0.15 M acetate buffer. The last step is a gel-chromatography on Sephadex G-200. Disc- and immunoelectrophoresis were used to test the purity. As by-product acid alpha1-glycoprotein can be obtained.

Proton NMR relaxation study of the binding of pyridine and 1-methylimidazole to some ferriporphyrins and to metmyoglobin.

Proton spin-lattice relaxation times of pyridine and 1-methylimidazole complexed on Fe(III)protoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester, Fe(III)tetraphenylporphyrin in chloroform and on metmyoglobin in 2H2O have been measured. Caused by chemical exchange of the ligand molecules into the bulk solvent phase, the decay of their MZ-magnetization is given by a superposition of two exponentials from which the mean lifetime of the complexed species can be determined. This method offers the possibility to study exchange kinetics of ligand molecules from a well defined molecular configuration. The present data are compared with the results from linewidth measurements of the bulk phase molecules. From both sets of parameters a detailed picture of the ligand exchange can be gained, particularly if spin transition of the paramagnetic organic metal complex occurs, as is the case for some ferriporphyrins. For metmyoglobin, the NMR result is compared with relaxation times extracted from temperature jump experiments under similar conditions.

Proton nuclear-magnetic-resonance study of low-spin ferriprotoporphyrin(IX) dimethyl ester.

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance shifts, spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times have been measured of low-spin bis-pyridine ferriprotoporphyrin(IX) dimethyl ester in chloroform. From the relaxation behavior the hyperfine coupling constant has been obtained and the contact term of the chemical shift was calculated. Deviations between measured and calculated chemical shifts may be attributed to second-order Zeeman interactions. The geometry of pyridine coordinated to the fifth and sixth position of ferriprotoporphyrin(IX) dimethyl ester was estimated from measured relaxation rates. From the non-exponential decay of the Mz magnetization a mean lifetime of taub = 50 ms for pyridine attached to low-spin ferriprotoporphyrin(IX) dimethyl ester was found at 253 K.
