[How much foot is better than none?].

The long-term analysis of ten cases of borderline amputations at midfoot level permits the following conclusions. The functional result of borderline amputation ad midfoot level depends on several parameters, including the elevator effect of the muscle antagonists; the quality of the integument; the traction between full-thickness skin and split-thickness skin grafts; local pressure over prominent bones; osteoarthropathy and osteolysis, especially in the diabetic foot; and subjective circumstances including general state of the health, age and activities.

[Could biomechanical factors affect the etiology of Morton's neuralgia?].

In the literature mechanical factors are considered as the most frequent etiology of Morton's disease. The pathology is a classical progressive fibrosis with rupture of nerve "fascicules" and/of arterioli, without nerve proliferation and without specific inflammatory factors. The deep intermetatarsal ligament and the bursae between the metatarsal heads are probably the most important factors in nerve irritation. In the literature there are few precise descriptions of the mechanism of irritation of the nerve, either by the bursae between the metatarsal heads, by the deep intermetatarsal ligament, or by the tendons of the lumbrical muscles which are close to the nerve. The aim of this study is an analysis of the mobility of these structures in both planes, by radiological evaluation in the erect position, after implantation of radiopaque pellets. The authors also present an hypothesis on the mechanism of the lesion.

Categorical color perception: influence of cultural factors on the differentiation of primary and derived basic color terms in color naming by Japanese children.

Color naming tests with Japanese children (age 12-15) in Yonezawa, Tokyo and Düsseldorf (Germany) demonstrate that the primary basic color terms based on Hering's opponent color scheme are not influenced by the increasing Western cultural influence from Yonezawa to Tokyo and to Düsseldorf. The derived color terms for brown, orange and pink hues do appear to be influenced, however. The results support and extend the findings of Uchikawa and Boynton (1987). They verify the hypothesis that the psycholinguistics of color naming are based on a universal neurobiology of human color vision.

[Indications and possibilities of surgical therapy in osteodystrophia deformans Paget].

Among the 105 patients treated in the orthopedic department of the Balgrist university hospital in Zurich for Paget's disease of bone, a total of 353 skeletal lesions have been recorded, sited mainly in the pelvic area, in the lower extremities and in the spine. The average age of these patients at diagnosis was 64 years. In 20% of them only one bone was affected, while in 80% the condition was polyostotic. One-third of the bone changes are asymptomatic and were discovered incidentally. Deformities of the tubular bones are the most frequent pathological finding, being observed in 33% of these patients, followed by joint damage resulting from the illness in 20%. In a total of 35 patients it has been necessary to correct deformities of the tubular bones or joint malpositions because of an inherent risk of fracture, or to perform internal fixation of pathological fractures. Great importance is laid on preoperative evaluation of the pain genesis, and if it cannot be adequately determined from the history calcitonin medication is tried out. The postoperative healing tendency for bones and soft tissues is good in the vast majority of patients; there is no delay in fracture healing even with the rather long period of perioperative medication.

[Osteonecrosis of the child's foot].

On the basis of defined diagnostic elements, numerous conditions described in the literature as osteonecrosis are divided up into rare and questionable forms of osteonecrosis, on the one hand, and distinguished from definite, spontaneous osteonecrosis form the other. The clinical and radiological characteristics are often in agreement with the course of the disease. These aspects are presented and the more up-to-date studies on the etiology are cited. The two forms of definite, spontaneous osteonecrosis of the foot in children are described extensively, and typical courses are illustrated.

Talus partitus. A case report.

A 15-year-old girl presented with a four-year history of pain in the left ankle. There was no known trauma, only a postnatal soft tissue infection which had healed with no sequelae. Radiographs showed that the talus consisted of two large fragments and one small one.

[Cruciate ligament lesions. Medico-statistical analysis].

The number of cruciate ligament injuries has grossly increased between 1970 and 1979 in the statistics of the Schweizerische Unfallversicherungsanstalt. Attention is drawn to new and more differentiated methods of diagnoses and therapy. A falloff of the invalidity rate owing to a betterment of diagnoses and therapy can only be observed trendwise. Preventive measures should be demanded above all in sports because there we find the origin of more and more cruciate ligament injuries.

Arthroscopy and patellar chondropathy.

Arthroscopy has proved to be a reliable method to determine acute and chronic retropatellar damage to cartilaginous tissue. The discrepancy between clinical and radiological findings, subjective disorders, and the actual morphological changes, seem to make arthroscopy desirable in analysing an objective and documentable initial situation. Long-term examinations will have to show how reliable prognostic statements are, and how justifiable the operative or conservative measures indicated by arthroscopic examination can be.

Correlations between the neurobiology of colour vision and the psycholinguistics of colour naming.

Neurobiological experiments demonstrate that colour sensation is perceived by the brain by processes which, in principle, follow the opponent colour pairs scheme proposed by Hering in 1874. Tests on colour naming in various European, Asian and Central American languages have shown that the opponent scheme is also reflected in psycholinguistics. The linguistic evolution of colour terms proposed by Berlin and Kay (1969) is correlated directly with the ontogenetic development of language in children as elucidated by Jakobson (1941). Colour vision is therefore a suitable field for interdisciplinary investigations of brain processes and linguistics.
