The biologic behavior of basal cell carcinoma: analysis of recurrence in excised basal cell carcinoma: Part II.

On the basis of a study of 188 cases of basal cell carcinoma of the face, the differences between the characteristics of recurrent and incompletely excised lesions are stressed. There was almost no difference in the recurrence rate of completely excised lesions and those in which there was histologic evidence of tumor at one of the margins. On the basis of these findings, a policy of conservative management of incompletely excised basal cell carcinoma is outlined.

Medullary carcinoma of the thyroid.

Three patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid gland, one sporadic and two familial, are described. One of the patients presented at a late stage of the disease with evidence of wide dissemination and severe diarrhea, which was controlled by indomethacin. The value of venous catheterization and plasma thyrocalcitonin measurements in evaluating the extent of the disease was demonstrated in this case.

Adult↗

Low-grade papillary adenocarcinoma of buccal mucosa salivary gland origin.

The clinicopathologic features of a low-grade papillary adenocarcinoma arising in minor salivary gland tissue are presented. This tumor demonstrates a predilection for minor salivary glands of the oral cavity, a slow growth pattern, recurrence in spite of radical excision, and a tendency to produce nodal metastasis. This is the second documented case in the English literature of this recently defined subtype of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma arising in a minor salivary gland of the buccal mucosa.

Adenocarcinoma, Papillary↗

Solitary lateral cervical cyst: presenting symptom of papillary thyroid adenocarcinoma.

Four cases of lateral cervical cysts in young women are presented. At least three of them proved to be the result of cystic degeneration of cervical lymph nodes containing metastatic papillary adenocarcinoma from the primary neoplasm in the thyroid gland. In each case, these cystic structures were the sole presenting sign of the disease. The significance of cystic metastases from papillary thyroid adenocarcinoma and their relationship to the primary tumor is discussed. The pathogenesis of these cystic metastases, their clinical setting, and differentiation from congenital cysts are emphasized.

Wernicke's encephalopathy in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS): a case report.

A 40-year-old male, with established AIDS developed cachexia and dementia. At autopsy opportunistic infections were found. An additional neuropathological finding was Wernicke's encephalopathy. Although malnutrition is common in AIDS patients, it seems that Wernicke's encephalopathy is rare in AIDS. Nevertheless, it is suggested that a therapeutic trial with parenteral thiamine may be useful in AIDS patients with amnestic syndrome and dementia.
