Cardiovascular risk factors in gross obesity.

In 500 obese patients (146 men, mean age 37 +/- 13 years, Broca index 147 +/- 24; 354 women, mean age 36 +/- 14 years, Broca index 151 +/- 28) cardiovascular risk factors (RF) were investigated. The most frequent RF was hypertension (71 per cent), followed by glucose intolerance (49 per cent), hypertriglyceridemia (31 per cent), hypercholesterolemia (22 per cent) and hyperuricemia (22 per cent). Only 12 per cent of the patients were without RF. These patients were younger and less obese than the patients with RF. The prevalence of RF increased with increasing age and overweight. Analysis revealed significant correlations between overweight and blood pressure, blood glucose, insulin and age. Significant correlations between age and hypertension, blood glucose cholesterol, triglycerides and overweight were detected. The correlation between overweight and the sum of all RF was higher (r = 0.35) than the one between age and the sum of all (r = 0.23). Obese patients had a high prevalence of RF. Increasing overweight and (to a lesser extent) age are both associated with increased prevalence of RF. On the basis of the prevalence of RF, patients with gross obesity (Broca index greater than around 150) were considered to be at a high risk in respect of coronary heart disease.

[Lung neoplasms in the Berne region. Epidemiology and smoking habit, compared to histology].

223 lung cancer patients were observed from June 1974 to April 1976. The diagnosis was by histology (after biopsy, operation or autopsy). There were 125 (56%) squamous cell carcinomas (sqcc), 42 (19%) small cell carcinomas (smcc), 27 (12%) large cell carcinomas (lacc) and 29 (13%) adenocarcinomas (adec). There were only 6 women (2.7%) in the series (3adec, 2 smcc and 1 lacc). Heavy and very heavy smokers were common in each group; smoking habits--even of patients with adec - differed markedly (p less than 0.0005) from those of an age and sex matched control group of 90 asthmatic patients with atopy. Sqcc patients were evenly distributed over the rural and urban zones of our region. But smcc, lacc and adec were more often seen coming from urban zones (p less than 0.0025). The whole lung cancer group was divided into a small group of 6 non-smokers (2.7%), into a 6.7% group of 15 pipe smokers, into a large group of 69 cigar smokers (30.9%) and into a final group of 133 (59.6%) cigarette smokers. The cigar smokers usually had sqcc (p less than 0.0005). The cancer of cigar smokers is more often a central lesion than a peripheral one (p less than 0.025). A history of repeated airway infections on the one hand, and severe airway infection at the beginning of lung cancer history on the other, are a more frequent association in cigar smokers than in cigarette smokers (p less than 0.01). Therefore, the lung cancer of cigar smokers is especially difficult to recognize. Cigar smoking appears to be just as important a link in the chain of causative factors leading to lung cancer as cigarette smoking.

Adenosine triphosphate in cholinergic vesicles isolated from the electric organ of Electrophorus electricus.

Synaptic vesicles have been isolated from the electirc organ of the bony fish Electrophorus electricus using sucrose step gradients and zonal centrifugation. Although the acetylcholine (ACh) content of the Electrophorus electric organ is only 2% of that of Torpedo, ACh and ATP can readily be measured in the peak fractions using the leech microassay and the firefly luciferin luciferase assay respectively. The protein content of the vesicle fraction in experiments with Electrophorus was much higher than with Torpedo, but a possible contamination of this fraction with mitochondrial or cytoplasmic particles could be excluded. The ACh to ATP ratio of 10.8 is close to that found for cholinergic vesicles isolated from Torpedo and also to that of other amine storing granules.

[Serial studies of the long-term effects of a total-fasting regimen (author's transl)].

The long-term results of total fasting during hospitalisation were evaluated an average of 21 months after the end of the hospital stay in 42 patients treated for obesity between 1971 and 1975. Further weight reduction occurred in 14, while the remainder had regained some weight. Nine of the latter had, in fact, surpassed their prehospitalisation weight. Neither age not sex, social status, time interval since fasting had any influence on the long-term results of total fasting. It is concluded that, in view of the poor correlation between cost and long-term result of such total-fasting regimen, it should be undertaken in this form only exceptionally.

[Incidence and damages inflicted by simuliid flies in the GDR district of Schwerin].

Systematic faunal studies in the district Schwerin showed at the present time there are 3 more or less damage-biotopes existing in the districts of Perleberg, Ludwigslust and Parchim; 5 river sources can be considered as potential sources, 5 are temporary and 2 are ephemeral whilst in 3 further areas environmental influences such as effluent impairs the flow of the river and the developmental stages of Simuliidae were not observed.--The following species were found: Boophthora erythrocephala, Wilhelmia salopiensis, Wilhelmia equina, Odagmia ornata, Eusimulium aureum and Eusimulium lundstroemi.--The damage statistics covering the period 1966--1971 showed in the district of Schwerin, due to Simuliid attacks, 38 cattle died, 170 were seriously ill; in 1967 5 horses were seriously ill; in 1971, 3 pigs died and 27 were seriously ill.--The symptoms were manifested by pathological petechiae, scabs and oedema, also by insufficiency of the heart and circulatory system, diminished performance and growth disturbance. In severe cases heart and circulation failure occurred, paresis, coma and death followed.--The real economic significance of the Simuliid attacks rest with its strong and prolonged distrubance in young animals, as well as in pronounced irreparable diminished performance in diseased dairy cattle.

[Pathological anatomy of the vinylchloride-disease (author's transl)].

A letal case of angiosarcoma of the liver is reported. The 38 years old chemical laboratory assistant was exposed in vinylchloride medium about 3 1/2 years. The sarcoma metastasised into many other organs. This case is the fifth one reported in the German Federal Republic, in four of the cases the patient died. VC concentration at the work place was not measured. Thrombocytopenia observed in about 80% of the VC cases was not seen. There will be possibly observed further VC-caused tumors in the population. Nevertheless there might be other even extrahepatic VC-caused tumors in man, which could be concluded by animal experimental investigations.
