[The study on the acoustic-phonetic features of marginal velopharyngeal closure].

OBJECTIVE: To study the acoustic-phonetic features of the cleft patients with marginal velopharyngeal closure. METHODS: The acoustic-phonetic features of 17 cleft patients with marginal velopharyngeal closure were analyzed with USSA sound spectrograph, contrasted by the features of 28 cleft patients with velopharyngeal incompetence and 18 patients with velopharyngeal competence. RESULTS: The manifestations of single vowel spectrum differ from that of the same vowel in sentence for MVPC patients. There are extra formants or strong nasal formants in a number of vowels spectrums in sentence, while they do not occur on single vowel spectrum. The spike and stop gap in the spectrograms of stops and affricatives may be absent or existing occasionally, and the noise energy in the lowest frequency area in the spectrograms of aspirated consonants may be watched or not. CONCLUSION: Acoustic analysis is very valuable to evaluate the state of marginal velopharyngeal closure. Analyzing the acoustic features of multiple vowels and consonants, and comparing the resonance characteristics of single vowel with the same vowel in continuous speech simultaneously are emphasized.

[In vivo color measurement of 410 healthy maxillary anterior teeth].

OBJECTIVE: In order to measure and analyse the color characteristics of intra-oral vital teeth objectively and accurately. METHODS: The fiber-optic spectrophotometer (FMC-9204, Kunmin, China) was used for measurements of 410 healthy maxillary anterior teeth of 70 people aged from 18 to 70 years old who lived in Kunmin, China. RESULTS: The results were expressed by CIEL*A*B* systems. Statistical analysis showed that: L* of natural teeth is related to age positively, and the regressive equation is L* = 42.74 + 0.14 x age. Value of A* is related to age negatively, the regressive equation is A* = 1.73 - 0.03 x age. The color of the maxillary anterior teeth was also related to tooth position. The central incisor has the highest value of L*, but the canine is the darkest. Besides, the canine is redder, yellower, and more saturated. CONCLUSION: These results may help to make the optic character of oral prosthetic material well matched with the natural teeth.

[Analysis of blood flow in ophthalmic arteries in patients with middle and late stages of glaucoma with Doppler sonography].

OBJECTIVE: To understand the actual blood flow in cases with middle and late stages of glaucoma and the role of vascular factor in the deterioration of visual function in such patients. METHODS: The blood flow in ophthalmic arteries was determined with color Doppler sonography (CDS) in 156 cases of patients with middle and late stages of glaucoma as well as in 75 cases of normal individuals as controls. RESULTS: The average peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end diastolic velocity (EDV) of ophthalmic artery in normal control are 35.98 +/- 9.13 cm/s and 11.98 +/- 3.90 cm/s; the PSV and EDV in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) group are 24.13 +/- 4.65 cm/s and 7.10 +/- 1.85 cm/s; and in primary close-angle glaucoma (PCAG) group are 22.89 +/- 5.43 cm/s and 7.06 +/- 1.92 cm/s, respectively. No significant difference was found between POAG group and PCAG group (P > 0.05). However, significant differences were shown between normal group and patients with glaucoma for both PSV and EDV (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The blood flow in ophthalmic arteries in patients with middle and late stages of glaucoma decreases significantly and the disorder in local blood circulation is evident, that is highly related to the deterioration of visual function and supports the vascular factor theory in the pathogenesis of glaucoma.

[An experimental research of recombinant human epidermal growth factor on corneal wound healing].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) eye drops on corneal wound healing. METHODS: Twenty-four white rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups, 6 rabbits 12 eyes each. Anterior keratectomy of 8 mm in diameter and 1/3 cornea in thickness was performed on each eye. Each of the following concentrations of rhEGF: 1, 10, 100 microg/ml eye drops or normal saline (control) was applied four times daily for a week respectively for one group. The wound area was determined by computer imaging analysis. RESULTS: The mean epithelial healing rate of rhEGF 1, 10, 100 microg/ml groups was 9.31, 9.96, 9.31 mm(2)/day respectively, significantly greater than 8.11 mm(2)/day of the control group. The action of rhEGF of 10 microg/ml was somewhat better than that of 1 or 100 microg/ml, and no significant difference was noticed among the three rhEGF groups. Moderate inflammation and corneal neovascularization were induced in the rhEGF 100 microg/ml treated group. CONCLUSION: rhEGF 1 - 10 microg/ml can accelerate corneal wound healing in the rabbit with no adverse side-effects. It may be used to treat serious corneal trauma and ulcer clinically.

[The composition and distribution of some kinds of anaerobic microorganisms in Yinqion basin].

Under the strictly anaerobic conditions, the population of Sulfate-reducing bacteria, fermentative bacteria and methanogenic bacteria of serial samples got from erect sections of different Sedimentary of Yingqiong basin (a typical marine sedimentary environment) were measured by MPN method. The morphology of different kinds of bacteria and the metabolic types of methanogen and methanogenic activity were observed. The relation between population of bacteria and some indexes were compared. The results show that SRB present in all of the samples. The distribution of SRB and fermentative bacteria have no interrelation with the depth of samples but SRB has interrelation with the SO(4)2- concentration, and fermentative bacteria has negative interrelation with the contents of organic matter. Two kinds of methanogen present in all of the samples. They belong to Methanobacterium and Methanococcus, respectively. Their types of nutriment are H2/CO2.

[The observation of proliferative cell nuclear antigen and AgNORs in ocular adnexal lymphoid hyperplasia].

PURPOSE: To investigate the expression of proliferative cell nuclear antigen and Nuclear Organizer Region in ocular adnexal lymphoid hyperplasia and its histopathologic classification. METHOD: Using anti-proliferative cell nuclear antigen monoclonal antibody (PC10) and AgNORs method, the proliferative cell in 34 cases of ocular adnexal lymphoid neoplasms (benign lymphoid lesion, BLL, 14 cases; atypical lymphoid hyperplasias, AH, 9 cases; malignant lymphomas, ML, 11 cases) were detected in formalin fixed and paraffin-embeded tissue. RESULTS: A significant difference between BLL and AH, BLL and ML was observed (PCNA P < 0.001, P < 0.001; AgNORs P < 0.01, P < 0.001); similar result was observed between AH and ML in PCNA index (P < 0.01). But there was not a significant difference in AgNORs count (P > 0.05). The linear regression coefficient between PCNA index and AgNORs number was excellent (0.8693). CONCLUSION: The two methods may be helpful to distinguish ocular adnexal lymphoid reactive hyperplasia and malignant lymphoma.

Tumor pretargeting for radioimmunodetection and radioimmunotherapy.

UNLABELLED: The limited success of the sole use of monoclonal antibodies for cancer detection and treatment has led to the development of multistep methods using antibodies in conjunction with low molecular weight agents. For tumor pretargeting, it is important to optimize dose and schedule of relevant agents and to understand barriers to targeted delivery. Here, we address these issues for the anti-carcinoembryonic antigen bifunctional antibody-hapten and the streptavidinylated antibody-biotin systems using a recently developed physiologically based pharmacokinetic model. METHODS: For baseline conditions of a standard 70-kg man with a 20-g tumor embedded in the liver, the model was used in conjunction with the Medical Internal Radiation Dosimetry schema to: estimate absorbed doses in tumor and normal tissues; determine the dose dependence of effector agent accumulation in tumor; simulate tumor-to-background effector agent uptake ratio; and calculate the therapeutic ratio for different antibody forms and radionuclides. Alternative drug administration schemes and variable tumor physiological conditions were considered. RESULTS: Model simulations showed that 131I-labeled biotin with the streptavidinylated F(ab')2 provided the highest therapeutic ratio under the optimized conditions. The simulations also showed that biotin with the bifunctional streptavidinylated immunoglobulin G provided the highest tumor-to-liver uptake ratio during the early period. Sensitivity analysis showed that antibody extravasation was the major factor limiting the accretion of the effector agent in tumor, whereas antigen expression in normal tissues and tumor antigen shedding had little effect on the absorbed doses. CONCLUSION: Tumor pretargeting should provide a definite advantage over direct antibody targeting with up to a 200% increase in tumor-to-background ratio in radioimmunodetection and up to a 76% increase in tumor-to-bone marrow therapeutic ratio in radioimmunotherapy. Rapid antibody clearance from the bloodstream before effector agent injection is expected to improve the therapeutic ratio marginally (3%-10%). However, continuous plasmapheresis dramatically increased the tumor-to-background ratio by a factor of 10 in RAID and the tumor-to-bone marrow therapeutic ratio by more than 110% for short-lived radionuclides in RAIT. Apart from drastic measures such as extended plasmapheresis, pretargeting selectivity was neither sensitive enough for radioimmunodetection nor effective enough for radioimmunotherapy in patients with typical solid tumors even using the optimized protocols.
