Effect of sex, age, body weight, and smoking on plasma viscosity.

The influence of age, sex, smoking, and body weight on blood plasma viscosity of a group of 639 healthy subjects was investigated in a randomized study. In order to determine the individual effects on a homogeneous collective of healthy subjects, all participants of this field study had to undergo physical examination, laboratory analysis, doppler sonography, and they were asked for a health history. The presence of disease or a disorder eliminated the participant from the study. Plasma viscosity was measured with the capillary tube plasma viscometer. Quality control according to clinical chemistry guidelines was conducted throughout the study to ensure the accuracy of the values measured being. It could be demonstrated that plasma viscosity is significantly elevated in healthy overweight subjects. However, a relationship between plasma viscosity and age, sex, and cigarette smoke inhalation could not be found.

[Determination of reference ranges of rheologic parameters: study of 653 randomly selected probands of the Aachen district].

To determine reference ranges for rheologic parameters (hematocrit, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation, erythrocyte rigidity) a randomized study involving 653 subjects was carried out. Conditions of sampling, transportation and storing of blood specimens were established prior to the survey. Only 283 subjects met the criteria for enrollment in the study; the others were rejected because of inconspicuous history, normal findings in physical and Doppler-sonographic examination and absence of the risk factors hypertension, diabetes mellitus, overweight, rheumatic diseases, and smoking. The reference range for hematocrit was determined by an impedance-measuring device to equal 39-52% for males and 34-50% for females. The reference range for plasma viscosity, measured by a capillary-tube-plasma viscometer, was found to vary from 1.14 mPas to 1.34 mPas. The reference values for the standardized erythrocyte aggregation index was determined with the mini erythrocyte aggregometer to range from 8 to 21. Erythrocytes measured with the selecting-erythrocyte rigidometer showed a rigidity reference range between 0.83 and 1.19. Analysis of the results revealed that the parameters were independent of age (except in young children) and sex (with the exception of hematocrit).

[Experiences with Sportgel in the ambulatory treatment of athletic injuries].

In a prospective open study over 2 years with 197 out-patients (150 men, 47 women, mean age 31 years) the efficacy and skin compatibility of a sportgel were investigated. Conditions of admission of a patient to the study were covered sport injuries according to their degree of severity of scaling 1-4 (0 = no complaints; 1 = slight complaints; 2 = slight to moderate complaints; 3 = moderate to severe complaints; 4 = severe complaints). Exclusion criteria were severe sport injuries older than three days and patients treated with medicaments others than with sportgel. 109 patients were treated who had muscle injuries and damages as a result of overstrain, 75 patients with joint injuries and damages from overstrain, and 13 patients with repeated injuries and damages from repeated overstrain in the muscular, tendon, and joint apparatus. Criterion of efficacy was the comparison of situation of ailment between treated and untreated patients in historic control. The descriptive evaluation of the results showed that under sportgel treatment the time of resumption of sporting activity is shortened generally by 2-6 days with damages of degrees of severity 1-4. During the two years' study none of the 197 patients showed any signs of skin incompatibility.

[Correlations between immunoenzymatic test, neutralization test and fluorescent focus reduction test in rabies antibody titration].

Three methods have been used and compared for the detection and titration of antibodies in the serum of humans receiving post-exposure treatment with tissue culture inactivated rabies vaccines: mouse seroneutralization test, fluorescent focus reduction test and immunoenzymatic test. Results have shown that the fluorescent focus reduction test has a sensitivity and specificity which are equivalent to the mouse seroneutralization test with the advantage of giving results in 30 hr instead of 21 days, and that the immunoenzymatic test which avoids the use of laboratory animals and/or cell cultures, and which gives results in 5 hr, may advantageously replace the neutralization methods, particularly for the testing of large numbers of sera.

[Immunostimulant properties of an extract isolated and partially purified from Aloe vahombe].

When the mice are given a hypodermic infection of unrefined Vahombe extract, the Aloe called Vahombe is a liliaceous plant growing in the South of Madagascar, they are protected against the infection caused by the Klebsiella, a pneumonia vector to man, giving rise to an experimental septicaemia in the mouse. Neither bactericide nor bacteriostatic activity has been detected yet about Aloe extract. The anti-infectious activity is proportional to the dose of extract injected, the protecting power is the greatest when the mice have been treated with Aloe, two or three days previously to the infection due to Klebsiella pneumoniae. We have determined the LD50 (Lethal dose 50) for the check batches (non-treated mice) and for the batches of protected mice. We were able to show that the previous injection developed the resistance to infection, multiplied from thirtyfold to a hundrefold. We have tackled the purification of the substance--made soluble after lyophilisation of the crude extract--by means of filtration with Sephadex G50. It would be the first time, for all we know, that a substance endowed with organism. At present we are proceeding with the purification of the active principle and contemplating trying the protective power upon virus infections as well as upon cancerous or parasitic ones.

[Studies on acetamides and formamides for embryotoxic and teratogenic activities in the rabbit (author's transl)].

The acid amides acetamide, monomethylacetamide, dimethylacetamide, formamide, monoethylformamide and dimethylformamide were investigated for prenatal and teratogenic effects in rabbits. The compounds were administered by stomach tube to the animals as aqueous solutions from the 6th to the 18th day post insemination. In rabbits monomethylformamide caused the most serious teratogenic effect. A teratogenic effect was also caused by monomethylacetamide. Formamide showed an embryotoxic and weak teratogenic effect when it was given in a non-toxic maternal dosage whereas acetamide and dimethylacetamide had an embryolthal effect only in toxic maternal dosages. The rabbit seems to be more sensitive to dimethylformamide than are other animal species because foetuses with anomalies were already seen when the substance was given in non-toxic dosages.
