The possible relationship between Laurence-Moon-Biedl-Bardet syndrome and a schizophrenic-like psychosis.

The Laurence-Moon-Biedl-Bardet syndrome is probably transmitted hereditarily and recognizable mainly by: a) retinitis pigmentosa; b) hypogonadism and obesity; and c) orthopedic anomalities such as polidactylia, syndactylia, and acroecephalosyndactylia with oligophrenia. Sometimes, other disturbance, mainly dermatological (alopecia), neurological, urological, endocrinological, and, rarely, congenital heart defects, may coexist.

A comparative uptake study of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine by platelets of acute schizophrenic patients.

Active uptake of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine by blood platelets of 22 acute schizophrenic patients and 15 normal control subjects was studied over a 6-week period. The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was used to evaluate the subjects' mental state over this period. Serotonin uptake by platelets of the schizophrenic group was 40% lower than that by platelets of the control group (p less than 0.001). No significant differences in uptake of dopamine or norepinephrine were observed. These results might reflected a genetic defect in the schizophrenic patients. No significant correlations were found between the biochemical and BPRS results. A correlation was found between the uptake results with dopamine and norepinephrine but not between these amines and serotonin. This finding may provide indirect support for previously published experimental data which suggest that the carriers to dopamine and norepinephrine differ in function from those of serotonin.

Conversive hallucinations.

Reports of conversive hallucinations are rare in the literature. A case is presented describing the psychogenesis and phenomenology of hallucinations experienced by a female patient.

Serotonin uptake by blood platelets of acute schizophrenic patients.

Active uptake of serotonin by blood platelets of acute schizophrenic patients has been compared to that of a control group. Preliminary results presented in this article indicate that the uptake of the schizophrenic patients was about 40% lower than that of controls. Patients were followed over a period of 5 weeks with no significant change in uptake.

Hysterical sleep episodes as a manifestation of masked depression.

A 55-year-old man suffered from compulsive sleep episodes as a manifestation of masked depression. Although the overt symptoms were conversive in nature, the treatment which finally focused on the depression was followed by disappearance of the patient's recurring sleeping spells for the first time in 4 years. Three methods were used: a) supportive psychotherapy, b) behavior therapy, and c) antidepressive medication. We conclude that the behavior treatment indirectly revealed the masked depression previously concealed by rigid defense mechanisms.

Amitriptyline↗

Response to amitriptyline and urinary MHPG in bipolar depressive patients.

This investigation was done in order to test the hypothesis that urinary MHPG levels provide a predictor of response to therapy in depressed patients. 15 elderly biopolar depressives were included in this study. Their depressive state was estimated by the Hamilton Depressive Scale and their urinary MHPG levels were simultaneously measured before and after 5 weeks of amitriptyline therapy. When comparing amitriptyline responders to nonresponders by parametric techniques, the responders excreted significantly higher mean MHPG levels before the treatment than the nonresponders. During treatment MHPG levels rose significantly in both groups.

Bipolar depression (manic-depressive disease) in early adolescence.

Bipolar Depression is rare in early adolescence. Since only rare cases were described in the literature, every case is important. In this article we described three cases of Bipolar Depression who were hospitalized in our Adolescent Unit during the past three years. All of them started at age 13--14. It is important to diagnose this illness in order to administer the required treatment in the acute phase and preventive treatment afterwards. Our experience indicates that treatment for early adolescents is identical with treatment for adults and calls for the same dosage.

Movement therapy with psychotic adolescents.

Non-verbal behaviour has long been a focus of attention in the psychiatric literature. Furthermore, most psychiatric hospitals make use of non-verbal therapies in their milieu programmes. These include art, music and dance therapy, and related to the latter, movement therapy. This paper represents the beginning of an attempt to assess more scientifically the effectiveness of movement therapy. It describes the movement therapy programme on our adolescent unit, the evolution of a measuring scale and compares three groups of patients: (A) a group which had received individual therapy; (B) A group which had received group therapy; and (C) a control group. The results tend to confirm the effectiveness of movement therapy for psychotic adolescents.

The heart image as a model to internal-organ body image.

We show that there is indeed an internal-organ body image: the heart. Using questionnaires and drawings, we compared a group of healthy subjects, a group of acutely ill cardiac patients and a group of chronic cardiac patients. A constant body image emerged which was not influenced by heart disease. It seems to us that this approach can serve as a model of further studies of internal-organ body image.

The perception of menopause in five ethnic groups in Israel.

An investigation was made into the menopausal symptoms and attitudes of 1, 148 Israeli women of five different ethnic origins. The results show that, while some of the somatic menopausal symptoms are independent of ethnic origin, psychic and psychosomatic symptoms are more closely associated with this variable. Similarly, attitudes to the climacteric vary across cultural origins, especially with regard to husband-wife relationships. This study underlines the necessity of a multi-factorial, biological, sociological, psychological and anthropological approach to problems of menopause.

Attitude↗

Attitudes toward mental illness and role conceptions of psychiatric patients and staff.

The patients and staff of a psychiatric hospital were asked about their attitudes toward mental illness and how they conceive the roles of various patient and staff groups in the therapeutic community. The focus was on the bipolar dimension of "Custodial" vs. "Accountability" orientation. A Custodial orientation discourages autonomy, promotes submission, and emphasizes the satisfaction of the physical needs of the patients. On the other hand, an orientation of Accountability emphasizes the "healthy" aspects of the patients and encourages autonomy and the sharing of power. These orientations were tapped by the use of a close-structured questionnaire. The results revealed that attitudes toward mental illness and role conceptions were highly related. Patients and nursing staff showed a greater custodial orientation than did other members of the staff.

Cell-mediated immunity to human myelin basic protein in schizophrenic patients.

Cell-mediated immune response to myelin human basic protein was studied by the macrophage migration inhibition test in patients suffering from schizophrenia. Eighteen out of 32 patients with chronic schizophrenia demonstrated human basic protein-induced inhibition of the migration index, while 4 out of 41 acute schizophrenics showed an inhibition of macrophage migration.

Acute Disease↗

Dimensions of adolescent in-patient behaviour.

140 adolescent in-patients were rated on a 40-item, 3-point behaviour scale. A principal component analysis was made and two major factors emerged which accounted for 44.3% of the total variance: one factor related to level of functioning and overinhibition and the other to aggression. A graphical representation of the patients with respect to the above factors provided important information as regards prognosis and clinical diagnosis. As in previous related studies (Klein & Davis (1969)), the validity of clinical diagnostic categories was confirmed and information on the process of making these diagnoses was provided.
