The results of a study of New England college students indicate that in 1977, marijuana and alcohol use among college students was widespread. Nearly all students reported that they drank alcoholic beverages, and more than two-thirds indicated that they had used one or more other drugs within the past year. Of these students, about 60% smoked marijuana, a drug that seems to be related to a student life-style involving the use of alcohol and other "recreational" drugs. Differences between those students who do smoke marijuana and those who abstain are apparently declining as marijuana use becomes more prevalent.

A 5-year experience is presented with a new regimen for renal tuberculosis, consisting of isoniazid, ethambutol and rifampin. This regimen has proved satisfactory to date and compares favorably to previous regimens. A plea for long-term therapy is made until further study of short-term treatment proves it to be free of recurrences.

A questionnaire survey of physicians who had been residents in internal medicine, pediatrics or obstetrics-gynecology in Massachusetts during the years 1967-1972 was undertaken to determine that specialties they now practice and the extent to which they deliver primary care. Over 600 physicians (74 per cent) responded. Devoting more than half their practice to a primary-care specialty were only 28 per cent of the former residents in internal medicine as compared with 56 per cent of those in pediatrics and 74 per cent of those in obstetrics-gynecology. For each group the fraction of full-time equivalent primary-care physicians produced was 0.27, 0.42 and 0.39 for the internal-medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics-gynecology programs respectively. These findings indicate that, although Massachusetts is meeting the requirements of PL 94-484 concerning the percentage of residency positions in the primary-care specialties, such compliance does not guarantee an adequate future supply of primary-care practioners.
A survey of the Boston metropolitan area correlated drinking patterns with sex, age, race, marital status and social class; findings were compared with previous studies in Boston, San Francisco and nationwide.
A case of renal tuberculosis in a man when he was 23 years old is reported. He was treated with streptomycin and reported routinely for followup examinations. When the patient was 52 years old, 29 years after treatment, he had a positive urine culture from the remaining kidney. Triple drug therapy was administered and has been effective. The need for lifelong examination of patients with renal tuberculosis is justified.

In a study of junior and senior high-school students in two Massachusetts communities, few consistent sex differences were found in patterns of alcohol and drug use.
A survey of 1715 junior and senior high-school students found that students who reported being intoxicated during the school year were more likely to report using marihuana, amphetamines, lysergide and other drugs than those who did not report being intoxicated.
A 10-year experience with an ethambutol regimen for renal tuberculosis is presented. Precaution must be taken with ethambutol since optic nerve atrophy can occur. This oral therapy is now given as a single, daily dose before breakfast and has proved successful in therapy and patient acceptance. No urine reversions have occurred in the 10 years. The regimen of ethambutol, isoniazid, cycloserine and pyridoxine may now be considered a first choice in therapy for renal tuberculosis.
