Weights of matching right and left middle or posterior cerebral arteries and their main branches from the same animal were compared 8-10 weeks after unilateral denervation by superior cervical ganglionectomy. When compared in pairs, the denervated arterial systems weighed significantly less (mean 85%) than their innervated counterparts. This suggests that the sympathetic innervation exerts a trophic influence on extracerebral arteries.

The stability of the mandibular positions during continuous phonation of the five vowels [( a], [e], [i], [o], [u]) and the relationship between each position and the rest position were examined for 30 subjects (males, 23 to 35 years of age) using the mandibular kinesiograph. Each subject had a complete or nearly complete natural dentition with no marked occlusal abnormalities. The mandibular position during continuous phonation of the vowel [i] appeared stable and was closely related to the rest position. It is thus suggested that the use of continuous [i] phonation is a viable method for determining the occlusal vertical dimension.
A method for selecting the individually suitable form and location of major connectors for partially edentulous patients is described. Light-polymerized resin patterns are alternately placed in the patient's mouth, and the most suitable location and the form of the major connector are selected. This trial pattern method makes it possible to better address the problems posed by difficult removable partial denture patients.
The need for prosthodontic instruction in Japan is increasing as the mean age of its population rises. The Japanese government formulated a policy in 1967 to ensure a sufficient number of dentists to deal with the challenge; with this new course of action has come an increased standard of dental care. Even though prosthodontic education occupies 20% of the 4-year predoctoral program in Japan, the author feels that predoctoral prosthodontic education must be improved to meet the needs of its people.
