[Animal experimental short and long-term study of a calcium hydroxide line].

Thirty-two cavities (class 5) out of total of 64 were coated either with the test substance Hydroxyline or with the control substance Dycal and closed with the standard compound Adaptic. Statistical analysis of seven criteria evaluated histologically (rating: 0-3) revealed no significant differences between the tested characteristics of the control substance Dycal and Hydroxyline in either the short-term or the long-term study.

Animals

[Scanning electron microscopic study of so-called carvable composite filling materials after over one-year functional period].

28 class-5 and 16 class-1 fillings were made from the composite material "Epoxydent" on a macaca speciosa monkey and examined with the electron microscope after a 15 months functional period. Statistically significant differences in the size of the marginal space were found to be larger than in comparable composites Adaptic, Concise, Compo-Cap and Cosmic. The spaces were frequently not located on the filling margin but inside, within the filling material. This is attributed to the "carving" technique during the gel phase of setting. The surface shows abrasions and porosities with loss of particles, sometimes fractures and discolored margins with secondary caries. It is not recommended to replace metal fillings by so-called carvable composits.

Animals

Polyanomalodontia.

Reported is a case of multiple anomalies in dental morphology. The morphological anomalies comprised macrodontia, multituberculism, invaginations, and single conical molar roots. The gross morphological, radiological, histological and ultrastructural findings are presented and compared to similar forms of multiple anomalies in dental morphology.

Dental Caries

[Long-term animal experimental studies of a new dentin and pulp protective varnish (Bayer D-520)].

A new polyurethan varnish (Bayer D-520) was tested on 4 monkeys with a total of 96 cavities after the norms of "Recommended standard practices for biological evaluation of dental materials" of the ADA 1975. After the successful short-term experiment of two weeks, a long-term examination of dentin and pulp protective properties followed. 6 combinations were used: - 16 silicate cement fillings with varnish, 16 with Dycal base (negative control), 16 without protection (positive control) - 16 composite fillings with varnish, 16 with Dycal and 16 without protection After an observation time of 3 months, with marks of 0-3 for each criterion of the histological sample a significant difference (p less than or equal to 0.01) in favour of the varnish- and Dycal-protected cavities resulted. A difference between the varnish and the Dycal base could not be statistically established.

Animals

[Animal experimental studies on a new dentin and pulp-protective lacquer (Bayer D-520)].

In an ADA experiment on the protective qualities of a new polyurethane varnish (D-520 Bayer) 72 class 5 cavities were prepared on 3 monkeys and treated by the following 4 methods: -- 18 silicate cement (Bio-Trey) with varnish -- 18 silicate cement (Bio-Trey) without varnish -- 18 composite (Adaptic) fillings with varnish -- 18 composite (Adaptic) fillings without varnish. After an observation time of 14 days, a significant positive result for the 520 varnish could be obtained. An experiment lasting 12 weeks was subsequently undertaken.

Animals

[Scanning electronmicroscopic study of 3 composite filling materials after 1 year's use].

This is an in-vivo comparative test of two test materials, composites Compo-Cap and Cosmic against Adaptic on a monkey (Macaca speciosa) over one year. No significant differences could be found and the defects on margins and in the surface was similar. Undubitable secondary caries could--unlike in a previous test with Epoxylite--not be found with these fillings.

Animals

[Scanning electronmicroscopic studies on the behavior of so-called caustic-adhesive composite resins].

Two new caustic-adhesive composite resins (Concise-Enamel-Bond and Nuva-Seal/Nuva-Fil) were tested in experimentally prepared flat cavities in extracted human teeth under the scanning electron microscope. On the basis of the findings, possible failures with this filling technique resulting from insufficient adhesion of the "sealer" at the enamel are discussed, and practical proposals worked out (utilization of rubber dam, final coating with the sealer to improve surface quality and prevent marginal gaps).
