In a multicenter study the prophylactic efficacy of two antibiotic regimens was tested against postoperative septic complications following elective colorectal surgery. The study was conducted in a prospective block-randomized design. Patients were preoperatively allocated to either ampicillin, 1 gm, four times daily, and metronidazole, 0.5 gm, three times daily, for 72 hours, or to cefoxitin, 2 gm, given three times in a period of 10 hours. Both regimens were initiated immediately before surgery. Forty-five patients were withdrawn from the study after randomization. Three hundred fifty two patients (175 receiving ampicillin and metronidazole and 177 receiving cefoxitin) completed the study and were followed for one month postoperatively. The frequency of septic and nonseptic complications was not statistically significant different between the two regimens. About one third of all septic complications appeared more than two weeks after surgery. It is concluded that short-term treatment with cefoxitin is at least as efficient as a three-day treatment with ampicillin and metronidazole.
Epidermoid cyst of the testis, which is regarded as benign monodermal development of differentiated teratoma and comprises less than 1% of all testicular tumors, was found within the tunica albuginea in a 23-year-old man. Following peroperative histologic confirmation of its benign nature, the cyst was locally removed, thereby avoiding orchiectomy.

An unusual case of benign fibroepithelial polyp of the renal pelvis in a patient past middle age is presented. Peroperative frozen section microscopy should be done to prevent nephroureterectomy. The therapy was local excision. The postoperative course was uneventful.
In a 36-year-old woman with monosymptomatic haematuria, urography showed moderate left-sided hydronephrosis and hydroureter. Five years later the dilation had increased and laparotomy showed a short stricture distally in the left ureter. Microscopy revealed external and internal ureteral endometriosis. Resection of the stricture was followed by regression of the dilation. To avoid irreversible kidney damage from unrecognized ureteral endometriosis, all known endometriosis patients should undergo urography.
From 1972 through 1983 there were 10 near-drowned children (7 boys and 3 girls) aged 1 to 4 years, treated as inpatients at the Children's Hospital of the Medical Academy Dresden. Three of them showed a severe aspiration pneumonia which in one case was complicated by bilateral pneumothoraces. In a further five children there were radiological signs of pulmonary oedema. Only in two children were the X-ray pictures of the chest normal.

The proportion of unpigmented coat on the trunk was determined from photographs of 38 German Simmental and 627 German Holstein bulls distributed over three generations. All 665 animals were members of 18 Holstein and 3 Simmental half-sib families. A Bayesian estimation of heritability yielded a posterior mean of 0.88 and a standard error of 0.08. A quantitative trait loci (QTL) scan over all chromosomes covered by 229 microsatellite marker loci (2926 cM) was performed by fitting a multiple marker regression model to 625 observations from the youngest generation in 18 families. On chromosome 6 a QTL for the proportion of white coat with large effects (experiment-wise error probability < .0001) was found and a less important one on chromosome 3 (chromosome-wise error probability < .009). Chromosome 6 is known to harbor the KIT locus (receptor tyrosinase kinase), which is associated with various depigmentation phenotypes in mice, humans, and pigs. Similarity of phenotypic KIT effects in other species and synteny with the reported QTL suggest that KIT is a serious candidate gene for the degree of spotting in cattle. The results are also discussed with respect to resistance to solar radiation, heat stress, and photosensitization.
Genome scans for quantitative trait loci (QTL) in farm animals have concentrated on primary production and health traits, and information on QTL for other important traits is rare. We performed a whole genome scan in a granddaughter design to detect QTL affecting body conformation and behavior in dairy cattle. The analysis included 16 paternal half-sib families of the Holstein breed with 872 sons and 264 genetic markers. The markers were distributed across all 29 autosomes and the pseudoautosomal region of the sex chromosomes with average intervals of 13.9 cM and covering an estimated 3155.5 cM. All families were analyzed jointly for 22 traits using multimarker regression and significance thresholds determined empirically by permutation. QTL that exceeded the experiment-wise significance threshold (5% level) were detected on chromosome 6 for foot angle, teat placement, and udder depth, and on chromosome 29 for temperament. QTL approaching experiment-wise significance (10% level) were located on chromosome 6 for general quality of feet and legs and general quality of udder, on chromosome 13 for teat length, on chromosome 23 for general quality of feet and legs, and on chromosome 29 for milking speed. An additional 51 QTL significant at the 5% chromosome-wise level were distributed over 21 chromosomes. This study provides the first evidence for QTL involved in behavior of dairy cattle and identifies QTL for udder conformation on chromosome 6 that could form the basis of recently reported QTL for clinical mastitis.
The authors analysed 171 cases of two or more corpses, found in a spatial and temporal coherence. The investigation revealed cases of manifold-homicides, homicides with suicide of the perpetrator, manifold-suicides, affects of cryptic, non human dangers from the outside, joint exposition to potential dangerous situations and casual deaths of two people at one place due to natural, internal diseases. The necessity of an autopsy in each case is pointed out.

On the occasion of an embryo being found with attached placenta, species differentiation of the fetus was to be carried out within the framework of a preliminary proceeding. Consulted gynecologists diagnosed a human embryo. From the macroscopic and histologic structure of the placenta, our investigations resulted a species diagnosis of an embryo belonging to the order Carnivora (cat). The diversity of external placental shapes as well as of different histologic structures permit species differentiation. The delimitation of the human embryo from nonhuman tissue should always be possible, even on formalin-fixed material.
A basic duty of coroner's inquest is to ascertain whether death was due to an internal or external cause or cause of death remains unclear; economic constrains and less effort for the coroner's inquest lead to blunders on several levels: the physician's level, the level of judicial inquiry and the Land governments. Typical negative and positive marks as well as intermediate stages on each of these levels are pointed out, perspectives are shown.
