A comparative study was made of all available milky-disease species and strains that have been isolated around the world from beetle larvae (family Scarabaeidae). Included in the study were Bacillus popilliae Dutky, B. lentimorbus Dutky, and B. lentimorbus var. maryland from the United States; B. euloomarahae Beard and B. lentimorbus var. australis Beard from Australia; B. fribourgensis Wille from Switzerland; and New Zealand milky disease (Dumbleton). The organisms were classified into three groups: (i) those containing parasporal bodies, including B. popilliae Dutky, B. fribourgensis Wille, and New Zealand milky disease (Dumbleton); (ii) those without a visible parasporal body and with spore morphology similar to B. lentimorbus Dutky, including B. lentimorbus var. australis Beard; and (iii) those with very tiny spores and no parasporal body, including B. euloomarahae Beard and B. lentimorbus var. maryland. All available milky-disease species and strains were cultivated in vitro on Brain Heart Infusion Agar plates. However, the most fastidious organisms-B. euloomarahae and B. lentimorbus var. maryland-could not be grown until they were passed through a life cycle in larvae of a large scarabaeid beetle infesting rotting wood. Then they remained stable for only one or two subcultures. All the milky-disease organisms produced larger cells in vitro than they did in vivo. The pattern of sugar fermentations was similar for all milky-disease species. It appears that there is a very low percentage of strains of B. popilliae, B. lentimorbus, and the other milky-disease organisms that have the inherent genetic makeup to permit them to sporulate on artificial media, if conditions are favorable. Among these conditions are a sufficiently high cell population and a reduced oxygen tension. Spores produced in vitro may have a low virulence via the normal ingestion pathway, even though they show apparent virulence when injected directly into the hemocoel.

A case of oral cancer that had derived from a 19-year skin graft on the left buccal mucosa is reported. The patient had had three previous operations due to squamous cell carcinoma, erosion, and squamous cell carcinoma of the left buccal mucosa, respectively. In the last two operations, skin was transplanted, and the present cancer is believed to have derived from the latter one. The tumor was resected, and a new skin was grafted. In situ hybridization of human papilloma virus (HPV) was carried out; the HPV 16 DNA could not be detected in the specimen. Eight months later, a cervical lymph node metastasis was detected; thus, a radical neck dissection was performed.
We investigated a newly synthesized conjugate of ursodeoxycholic acid with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to determine its suitability to evaluate enteric bacteria. This compound, PABA-UDCA, is deconjugated by cholylglycine hydrolase to release free PABA whereas it is completely resistant to deconjugation by pancreatic and intestinal mucosal enzymes. In bacteriological experiments, almost all of the microorganisms which split glycocholic acid deconjugated this compound. In animal experiments, urinary excretions of PABA were measured for 6 hours following oral administration of 10 mg PABA-UDCA. Ten control rats excreted 338.5 +/- 43.8 micrograms (mean +/- SD) of PABA; 10 rats with intestinal bacterial overgrowth due to enteric stagnant loops excreted more (673.6 +/- 222.1 micrograms; p less than 0.01), whereas 10 rats in each of 8 groups with intestinal antisepsis by oral administration of various antibiotics excreted significantly less (p less than 0.001) (ampicillin + doxycycline + fradiomycin: 18.3 +/- 16.7, polymixin B + tinidazole: 14.0 +/- 8.0, polymixin B: 224.9 +/- 74.3, tinidazole: 42.7 +/- 27.3, kanamycin: 50.3 +/- 18.2, clindamycin: 57.4 +/- 23.3, vancomycin: 70.4 +/- 27.0, and paromomycin: 160.4 +/- 51.9 micrograms). These observations indicate that this compound is likely to offer a simple and rapid method for evaluation of intestinal microorganisms without the use of radioisotopes or expensive, special apparatus.

We report two cases with interstitial pregnancy, which showed completely different MR appearances. In case 1, a gestational sac was demonstrated and the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was straightforward. In case 2, a hypervascular mass was shown without demonstration of a gestational sac, the findings usually seen in gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). MR imaging may play some role in the diagnosis of interstitial pregnancy when sonography is insufficient or equivocal. If GS is visualized, diagnosis is easy. However, if not, the appearance may have a spectrum and can be similar to GTD.
Two critical issues need to be addressed regarding islet cell transplantation: obtaining sufficient supply of cells for implantation, and the maintenance of the viability of these cells. Our present study has two protocols. One is islet cell implantation under the renal capsule, and the other, repeated injection of islet cells into the peritoneal cavity. These two methods were compared in an isogeneic transplant model in the rat to determine the more clinically beneficial method. Transplantation of 2000-2500 islet under the capsule of the kidney resulted in normalized blood sugar levels for more than 100 days in four of five rats with hyperglycemia. However, normalization for the same duration by islet cell injection into the peritoneal cavity necessitated repetition of injections in two out of three tested rats. In view of the similarity of the results obtained with these two protocols, intraperitoneal implantation of a few cells is preferable, because the need for prolonged cell preservation is avoided.
Intrathymic injection of donor alloantigens (splenocytes) was performed in rat heart transplantation to induced tolerance. In our experimental protocol, male (BN rats, RT1n) heart allografts were transplanted to female (LEW rats, RT1(1)) recipients in order to detect the existence of Y-chromosomes in recipients' tissues using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) after the establishment of microchimerism. The mean survival time (MST) of male heart allografts was prolonged by the thymic injection protocol. PCR analysis of the Y-chromosomes of these recipients showed that splenocytes inoculated into the thymus still remained after as long as 30 days, while none of the cells that originated from the donor were never detected in the peripheral blood. On the other hand, our previous study demonstrated that the donor-specific Y-chromosomes could be detected in all the tissues of the females (peripheral blood, lymph nodes, spleen, and liver) except for thymus, of the sex-mismatched rat liver transplantation without thymic injection. Completely inconsistent results were deduced from two of our experiments, but the present study demonstrated that thymic clonal deletion played a major role in the prolongation of allograft survival after intrathymic injection of donor alloantigens.

Hemangiopericytoma is an uncommon vascular tumor. Primary or metastatic hemangiopericytoma of the ovary is extremely rare. A 48-year-old Japanese woman had a tumor in the neck. Simultaneously, a solid ovarian tumor was detected. She had received treatment for intracranial hemangiopericytoma 17 years previously. For the ovarian tumor, she underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The left ovarian tumor weighed 1510 g and its cut surface was solid without areas of hemorrhage or necrosis. It was microscopically composed of tightly packed tumor cells outside of many vascular vessels. One or two mitotic figures were counted per 10 high power fields. Immunohistochemically, vimentin was expressed but factor-VIII-related antigen, CD 31, and CD 34 were not expressed in the tumor cells. Electron microscopy showed that the tumor cells were grown outside of the endothelium-lined vascular spaces. A discontinuous external basal lamina was also observed. We present a case of metastatic malignant hemangiopericytoma of the ovary from a primary intracranial hemangiopericytoma with a long interval of 17 years.
