Dental development in the midwest of America.

During the early nineteenth century, dentistry was just beginning its existence as a profession and emerging from a trade into a profession in the United States. Dental schools were being established to replace preceptorships as a means of training and members of the profession became aware of the need to draw up laws for the regulation of the professions. The Midwest of the United States participated in these changes and many of the dental practitioners of the Midwest started the reforms that ultimately led to the establishment of dentistry as a profession. Some of these originators and their contributions are reviewed.

Histopathology according to G.V. Black.

Eighty-eight handmade microscope slides prepared by G.V. Black are discussed. Black sectioned tissues using a homemade microtome and razor blades. Different sections of the same material were stained with various stains or double stained. Because of the importance of Black's writings, it was interesting to find slides that he prepared, to try to compare them to his publications, to study the way in which he obtained information, and to find the conclusions he drew from his experiments.

Founders of the American Association of Women Dentists: their legacy lingers on.

Lucy Hobbs was the first women to graduate as a dentist from Ohio Dental College in 1866. By the turn of the century a sufficient number of women had graduated to create a need for the establishment of groups specifically for women in dentistry. The Women's Dental Association of the United States was incorporated in 1892 with 12 founding members, although the name was changed to American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) in 1928. This paper traces the history of the AAWD and provides some biographical details about the 12 founders.
