Patients first: small hospitals in Ontario favour patient-focused care.
Is patient-focused care the model of the future? In 1993, CEOs of selected small hospitals across Ontario were asked if the patient-focused-care model is used in their facilities and, if so, to provide examples of some of the activities involved. This article presents a summary of the study's findings, discusses the model's merits and challenges for implementation, and offers several recommendations to assist hospitals contemplating the introduction of this model of health care delivery.

Preliminary evaluation of the effectiveness of a preoperative clinic for gynaecological surgery.
A preoperative clinic for gynaecological surgery was introduced primarily to provide counselling but with access to multidisciplinary support. Initial results showed a substantial reduction in the postoperative hospitalisation period and a significant improvement in attendance rates.

Linkage analysis in 16 families with incontinentia pigmenti.
A locus for the X-linked dominant genodermatosis incontinentia pigmenti (IP) has been linked to markers in Xq28. Here we report high lod scores for markers spanning the interval DXS52-DXYS154 using 16 families, providing further evidence for a single major X-linked IP locus.
