Benign familial haematuria in children from the Jewish communities of Israel: clinical and genetic studies.

Over 7 years, 130 children were referred for prolonged isolated haematuria of unknown cause. In 34 instances, haematuria was also found in one or more family members. In 23 of these families (18% of all referrals for isolated haematuria), investigation and follow-up, for periods of 5 to 10 years, of the index cases and of 56 haematuric relatives showed no evidence of renal disease and no other pathological findings. These subjects were diagnosed as having benign familial haematuria. The gene for benign familial haematuria is apparently transmitted as an autosomal dominant with reduced penetrance and variable expressivity. In Israel, the disorder seems to be more frequent among Jews of non-Ashkenazi descent than among those of European ancestry (Ashkenazim).

[Familial form of idiopathic hypercalciuria with nanism, bone and renal involvement in children].

A brother and a sister are reported, demonstrating the severe form of childhood idiopathic hypercalciuria associated with dwarfism, renal defects and bone lesions (rickets and osteoporosis). The family are Israeli Beduins from a small village with a highly inbred population. The parents who are first cousins, and the remaining 6 siblings are not affected. This suggests an autosomal recessive form of transmission for the trait.

[Vestibulometry by infrared emission (author's transl)].

The paper describes a method for caloric stimulation of the labyrinths by means of infrared emission. The introduction of a probe the tip of which carries an efficient gallium arsenide diode effects short wave infrared radiation and induces a caloric nystagmus toward the same side. This method can be employed also in cases of tympanic membrane perforations without any adverse effects. Its significance can be considered equal to that of the traditional methods.

[On the oscillation form of the stapes as a function of the volume. Experimental investigations into the human temproal bone preparation (author's transl)].

In order to further clarify the change in the oscillation form of the stapes as a function of the volume, measurements were performed in 10 fresh temporal bone preparations at two points at the short and long diameters of the base of the stapes from the labyrinthine side. The oscillations were recorded from two channels, first, by two electro-dynqual stress on the base of the stapes, also optically by modulating a light beam and electronically scanning by means of a phototransistor, and the oscillations were then recorded on a two-beam oscilloscope. The result was that it is not possible to prove any phase shift between the two measurement points at the short or at the long base of the stapes in a volume range within the physiological limits. Thus, any sweep phenomenon at high volumes does not exist. Also, a volume-dependent shift of the oscillation axis on a line within the base was not to be observed.

[The results of comparative examinations in patients with grass pollen allergies (author's transl)].

Detailed histories of 20 patients with suspected hay fever were prepared from questionnaires. These patients were skin-tested with allergens prepared form four different grass mixtures, and a nasal provocative test with a fifth grass preparation was utilized. This latter test was evaluated by the clinical reaction of the nasal mucous membrane, by measuring the temperature variations in the nasal lumen, and by determining the nasal resistance with the use of "passive anterior rhinomanometry" (P.A.R.). In addition, the total serum IgE level and three grass-specific IgE concentrations were determined. The following results were then found: eight patients were consistently positive and four patients were consistently negative in all tests for allergens. Among the remaining eight patients, two false-positive and six false-negative patients by skin tests were uncovered by the additional use of history, IgE determinations and the nasal provocative test with rhinomanometric evaluation.

[Methods for oscillography on the temporal bone preparation (author's transl)].

Oscillography of the middle ear structure on the temporal bone preparation are of essential importance for the expansion of our knowledge concerning physiological process and thus also for the further development of operation techniques that improve hearing. With the increased technical possibilities we are now able to make processes in the range of only few A measurable and visible. Accordingly, the methods employed for this purpose are complicated and manifold. The goal of this paper is to summarize these techniques as far as possible, to describe them in an understandable way, and to briefly point out their pros and cons. Optical methods, nearly all of which are in use today, as well as new methods such as laser interferometry and the Moessbauer technique, which can be performed only in few laboratories, are discussed.

[Observations of lateral cervical fistulae and cysts over 10 years (author's transl)].

The series consists of 52 cases of branchial lateral cervical cysts and fistulae seen over 10 years. The majority were deep to the superficial cervical fascia or extended there, and only about half the cases were related to the carotid sheath. Fistulae are either inborn or more rarely arise later as a result of a cyst perforating outwards. Cysts present clinically mostly between the 15th and 35th year, perhaps arising as a result of spontaneous growth or inflammation may provide the stimulus to growth. All cases received operative treatment with a recurrence rate of 7.8%. Multiple recurrences were not uncommon due to increasing technical difficulties. The severity of complications is taken into account with every operation for recurrences. Radiological contrast filling of the fistula may help in the preoperative diagnosis, but it is not always reliable in demonstrating the extent and situation of the fistulous tracks.
