Experimental lipidosis of the inner ear.

Chronic administration of so-called amphiphilic drugs induces an accumulation of lysosomes of different types containing phospholipids in the inner ear. The inclusions are regularly found in the inner hair cells of the organ of Corti, sometimes in supporting cells, whereas the outer hair cells remain almost unchanged. Several nerve fibres in the area of the inner pillar cells and to a lesser degree in the vestibular labyrinth are swollen and filled with osmiphilic material and vacuoles; sometimes they are degenerated. The preference of the inner hair cells is probably the expression of a specially high turnover of lipids in these cells.

[Papilloma of the larynx. Immunology (author's transl)].

Electron-microscopic and immunohistological studies show the cross-reactivity of an antigen in verruca plana, condyloma acuminatum and laryngeal papilloma. If this antigen is identical with papova virus or a tumor-performed antigen, cannot be distinguished definately. The fact that sera of patients bearing condylomata acuminata show strong antigen-antibody-reaction with tissue-sections of laryngeal papilloma by means of immunofluorescence microscopy, is discussed in a probably therapeutical point of view.

Neuroanatomical basis of cochlear coding mechanisms.

The afferent cochlear neurons to outer and inner hair cells differ not only in their relative numbers (95% to inner hair cells and only 5% to outer hair cells) and distribution pattern (great convergence for outer hair cells and divergence for inner hair cells) but also in their degeneration behaviour and metabolism. Some special afferent fibres seem to exist. The afferent neurons present three types of ganglion cells in the spiral ganglion with no morphological evidence for an extensive direct interaction between afferent neurons of the outer and the inner hair cell system at any level in the cochlea and even their efferent nerve supply is essentially separated.
