[Measles vaccination with split vaccines and living vaccines (author's transl)].

Two vaccination groups were observed over four years. One group received multiple preliminary vaccinations with measles split vaccine and were subsequently immunised with measles live vaccine. The second group received live vaccine only. The protection from the live vaccine, with and without the preliminary vaccination, must be considered very good, while the protection of a preliminary vaccination with split vaccine is only sufficiently effective for 1 1/2 to 2 years. All children-whether pre-vaccinated with split vaccine or not-should be protected against measles with live vaccine from the second year of life.

Ribosomal proteins in plastids of a Mendelian and a nonmendelian streptomycin-resistant mutant of Chlamydomonas reinhardii determined by two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis.

The pattern of ribosomal proteins in plastids of a nonmendelian streptomycin resistant mutant does not differ from that of wildtype cells when compared by two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis. The protein pattern of a mendelian resistance mutant is changes, however. Since the resistance in this mendelian mutant is probably caused by a change in the ribosomal proteins, the resistance in the nonmendelian mutant must be considered as a change of the ribosomal RNA.

Lipid storage myopathy with normal carnitine levels.

A 28-year-old female, who showed a floppy baby syndrome during early infancy, had a non-progressive proximal muscle weakness with easy fatiguability since childhood. Two muscle specimens biopsied at the age of 28 years revealed myriads of 1-3-mum wide abnormal spaces containing neutral fat in type I and type II fibers. Both biopsies demonstrated a type I fiber preponderance. Electron microscopy demonstrated lipid excess and normal mitochondria by simple inspection. The mitochondrial area and sarcotubular membrane profile concentration in morphometry of longitudinal sections were also normal. Cross-sections, however, revealed a slight decrease of the individual mitochondrial size and of the sarcotubular membrane profile concentration . Serum and muscle carnitine levels and the muscle carnitine palmityltransferase level were all within normal range. Besides carnitine deficiency other biochemical defects can occur in lipid storage myopathy, which represents a syndrome rather than a unique disease entity.

[The significance of speaking for the transfer of bacteria, and of the tuberculin skin test for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (author's transl)].

A Korean nurse was employed in Germany after having passed the routine medical checkup without discovery of apparent disease. Five months later she fell ill with fever due to pneumonia. Work was suspended for 8 days and then continued in an infants' ward for another 8 weeks. Because of increasing weakness the nurse was reexamined medically. This revealed an open Tuberculosis of the lung. The sputum culture was positive. The following treatment was successfull. No infant or other person with previous contact to the nurse contracted tuberculosis. The explanation for this is presumably given by the virtual speechlessness of the foreign nurse. --The importance of the tuberculin skin test for the diagnosis of tuberculosis is discussed with regard to the declining incidence of new infections, and practicability of mass screening for this disease.
