Studies of erythrocyte sequestration. II. Liver homing.

Xenogeneic and enzyme-treated erythrocytes rapidly home to the rat liver as measured by scintigraphic procedures. Histology and scanning electron microscopy revealed that pronase digested erythrocytes are taken up as whole cells by liver histiocytes.

[Comparison of endoscopic biopsy and scintiscans in liver diseases (author's transl)].

The diagnostic possibilities of liver scintiscans with indium-113m acetylacetonate were investigated in 314 patients. The results obtained were compared with our own endoscopic biopsy investigations. The scintiscans give information on the stage of the disease, but in contradistinction to the laparoscopic biopsies, not on etiology or activity of the disease. In contrast to the endoscopic biopsies, scintigraphy carries no risk. The advantage of the indium-113m acetylacetonate we used lies in the low radiation exposure.

Hemolysis and blood loss in children with chronic renal failure.

Erythrocyte life span was determined in 19 children with chronic renal failure on conservative treatment and in 12 children on regular hemodialysis. Erythrocytes were labeled with 111Indium. Blood loss was measured using a special counting chamber. Erythrocyte life span decreased with increasing blood urea nitrogen. Blood loss into the intestine and into the dialysis equipment was found to be a major cause for anemia of children with chronic renal failure. Daily intestinal blood loss amounted to 6 ml/m2 BSA on conservative treatment and 11 ml/m2 on hemodialysis. Mean blood loss in the dialysis equipment was 8 ml/m2 per dialysis, almost half being lost in the connecting tubing systems.

[May Perthes' disease be due to venous block? Experimental investigations on growing pigs].

In 13 growing pigs (mini-pigs) all veins draining the head of femur were ligated intra-abdominally. In 2 i.v. injection of 12% Varigloban into the common iliac vein was added, in another 2 the same drug was injected into the head of femur. No real changes could be seen in X-rays, macro- and microscopically. Slides showed only more or less pronounced fibrosis. Scintigrams showed a reduction of radio-active storage in the head of femur by about 12%. The results and conclusions for human pathology are discussed.

[Experimental results with new radiopharmaceuticals in autochthon brain tumors of rats (author's transl)].

It could be demonstrated by own investigations that ENU-tumors (brain-tumors induced with Ethyl-Nitroso-Urea) are better for clinical questions than the usual transplantation tumors. In this experimental study the temporal and quantitative condition of accumulation of 64Cu-Dimethylglyoxim and 59Fe-Acetyl-Acetone was investigated in rats with ENU-tumors compared with 99mTc-Pertnetate and and 67Ga-Citrate to answer the questions wether 64Cu-Dimethylglyoxim and 59Fe-Acetyl-Acetone are qualified for brain scanning. 64Cu-Dimethylglyoxim and 59Fe-Acetyl-Acetone show like 99mTc-Pertechnetate and 67Ga-Citrate certain affinity to the tumor. At the same time they accumulate in healthy tissues, too. The kinetice of the single radiopharmaceuticals is different. The rates of accumulation of 64Cu-Dimethylglyoxim after 24 hours and of 59Fe-Acetyl Acetone after 4 hours correspond to the rates of accumulation of 99mTc-Pertechnetate after 1 hour. Opposite to this rates of accumulation of 67Ga-Citrate are, because of the high accumulation in the bone, distinctly worse. There are 3 consequences: 1. Brain scintigraphical investigations should not be made with 67Ga-Citrate. 2. Brain scans with 64Cu-Dimethylglyoxim and 59Fe-Acetyl-Acetone will give no better results than scans with 99mTc-Pertechnetate. 3. Further investigations with 64Cu-Dimethylglyoxim and 59Fe-Acetyl-Acetone are not indicated.
