Cairo: repackaging population control.

Aid agencies, charities, and other nongovernmental organizations once denounced population control programs as racist interference in the third world. Yet, at the United Nations Conference on Population and Development in Cairo last September, these same organizations endorsed very similar ideas. The U.N. can now claim that even its fiercest critics not only have muted their criticism of population control programs but now positively endorse them. Over the last 30 years, population control has been consciously repackaged by the U.S. establishment. The image of population control has changed from being overtly anti-third world to being about giving the people of the third world--especially women--basic rights in family planning. Wrapped up in the language of women's empowerment and environmentalism, the establishment's old arguments about there being too many nonwhite babies in the world, have, unfortunately, won the day.

Saline-instillation abortion with laminaria and megadose oxytocin.

This study examines the effect of laminaria and oxytocin in 638 saline instillation abortions. Laminaria were inserted into the cervical canal in the physician's office 2 to 3 hours before admission to hospital for instillation. Pitocin was given intravenously at a rate of 417 to 555 mu/min starting 2 hours after instillation. Pitocin was given intravenously at a rate of 417 to 555 mu/min starting 2 hours after instillation. Center for Disease Control (CDC) criteria were used to define complications in the present series. Complication rates compared favorably to those in a national CDC study of traditional saline procedures. Instillation-abortion times averaged 12.5 hours in the present series, about half the time previously reported for saline abortion. If confirmed by other studies, laminaria and oxytocin will be beneficial adjuncts for managing patients aborted by saline instillation.

Experimental measurement of impulse response and noise for an emission computed tomography system.

Experimental studies have been made of the impulse response and noise characteristics of a tomographic system using a gamma camera. Fourier transform, deconvolution and iterative methods have been used with a CDC 6600 computer to reconstruct images from data obtained for various experimental arrangements of sources in a cylindrical phantom. It is shown that with an appropriate attenuation correction the impulse response in the reconstruction is substantially constant, independent of the position of the source in the phantom and that the reconstruction technique used is of secondary importance. The resolution obtained for the impulse response and the relative noise level throughout the 'non image' part of the reconstructions is shown for different experimental situations. The measured variance in the reconstruction of an extended uniform activity source was found to be somewhat below the theoretical value except at high count densities (above 1,000 counts per image element) where the limit of accuracy of the reconstruction is shown to be imposed by the variation in the camera sensitivity over the field of view.
