[Regional pulmonary blood flow and its regulation in patients with obstructive lung disease (author's transl)].

Regional blood flow was measured in 47 patients with obstructive lung disease, using iso-intensity zone scanning after injection of 131I macro-aggregates in the supine (27 subjects) or sitting (20 subjects) position. In most of the patients there was a shift of pulmonary blood flow to the upper lung fields. The shift was related to pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary arteriolar resistance.

[Further measurements of the 14C-content of fermentation alcohol in dependence of growth times and location of the fermentation material (author's transl)].

The carbon-14 content of ethanol obtained from material (mostly potatoes) grown in the years 1964--1973 is compared with that of material of the vegetation periods 1956--1966 determined by other laboratories. Six ethanol samples from material grown 1973 in different parts of Europe show no significant differences. The average value is 19.3 dpm/g carbon. Furthermore no significant difference was found in ethanol from potatoes cultivated 50--800 m east and west of a freeway with very heavy traffic. The same is true also for ethanol from potatoes grown near a large industrial area and others grown far from such an area.

[On the specifity and stereospecificity of the conversion of different 2,3-unsaturated acids by Clostridium kluyveri (author's transl)].

Further 2,3-unsaturated acids are revealed which can be reduced by Clostridium kluyveri with crotonate or butyrate as hydrogen donors. Unsaturated and saturated 3-halogenated acids are transformed into the saturated halogen-free acids. The following reaction sequence is proposed: a) hydrogenation, b) elumination of HX and c) again hydrogenation. Tiglinate ((E)-2-methyl-2-butenoate) and (E)-2-methyl-2-pentenoate are stereospecifically reduced to the (S)-2-methyl substituted acids. C. kluyveri contains endogenous material; in the presence of hydrogen acceptors such as 2,3-unsaturated acids this is degraded to acetate, and the reducing equivalents liberated hydrogenate the unsaturated acid. In a transient phase the hydration products of the unsaturated acids are present in the non-activated form in appreciable amounts. Tiglinate as well as crotonate is partially converted to ethyl methyl ketone and aceton and/or propanol, respectively.

[The occurrence of a reductase of delta2-carboxylic acids in Clostridium kluyveri with a stereospecificity different from that of butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase (author's transl)].

A Clostridia strain (R-strain) which hydrogenates tiglinate (1b) and alpha-methylcinnamate (1c) in the presence of hydrogenase gas in 2H2O to (2R, 3S)2-methyl-[2,3-2H]butyrate (5b, H = 2H) and (alphaR, betaR)alpha-methyl[alpha,beta-2H]dihydrocinnamate (5c, H = 2H), respectively, was isolated. The configuration at C-3 was determined by 1H-NMR spectroscopy in the presence of Eu(fod)3. The stereochemistry of this hydrogenation is the mirror image of that which has been determined with intact cells of another strain of Clostridium kluyveri (S-strain). In the presence of hydrogen gas, the R-strain hydrogenates crotonate in 2H2O to butyrate with the following deuterium distribution: C-2, 1.85; C-3, 1.35; and C-4, 0.63 deuterium atoms. Crotonate seems to be the substrate of two reductases with sterically different actions. Tiglinate (1b) and alpha-methylcinnamate, however, are hydrogenated only by that reductase which is different from the butyryl-CoA dehydrogenase.

[Stereochemistry and mechanism of the methanol oxidase from Candida boidinii (author's transl)].

Under nitrogen atmosphere, methanol oxidase isolated from Candida boidinii catalyzes no hydrogen exchange of ethanol. Reactions with (1R)[1-3H]ethanol or (1S)[1-3H]ethanol occur stereoselectively. The ratio of hydrogen abstraction in the oxidation of ethanol is about 7:1 in favor of the pro R hydrogen atom. The isotope effect kH/k3H is 2 - 2.5 for (1R)[1-3H]ethanol. The isotope effects on Km and V have been determined for four different deuterium-labelled ethanols. The Km for [2H3]methanol is nearly twice that for CH3OH. That is about the same ratio as for ethanol/methanol. For the oxidation of CH3OH and 2H3COH, the ratio of VH/V2H3 = 2.44, while the ratio for methanol/ethanol is only 1.3. It has been conformed that catalase from bovine liver eliminates only the pro R hydrogen atom from ethanol. The isotope effect for the catalase-catalyzed oxidation of (1R)[1-3H]ethanol is 2.1.

[Regional neck lymph nodes and primary tumors. 2. The reactive neck lymph node lesion].

Topographic classification of lymphatic nodes with reactive changes and with metastasis makes evident, that the regional lymph nodes have not only changes, caused by inflammation but also by growth of tumor. Thus, the lymph nodes are accomodation of defense and in the second place as an accommodation of discharge. The regional lymph nodes respond independent of the extent of the primary tumor. The regional metastasis are nearly always localized in the center of lymph nodes with reactiv changes. Lymph nodes with follicular lymphatic hyperplasia are situated in the immediate environment of the metastasis. Lymph nodes with sinus-reaction are extended before the metastasis, in direction of lymph discharge. By super imposed projection of the results of histological evaluation of cervical glands with metastasis in the neck, one obtains to some extent an impression of the defense activity by the lymph nodes at the time of the operation.

[Regional neck lymph nodes and primary tumors. 1. Neck lymph node metastases].

The metastasis are situated in the primary regional lymphnodes. Preoperative palpation of the neck gives unreliable results. The extent of the primary tumor has no correlation to the occurence of metastasis. When the tumor is localized in the supraglottic, transglottic or in the tongue base region the frequency of metastasis in lymph nodes is approximately equal; more than half of them have metastasis. When the tumor is localised in sinus piriformis or in the marginal region a still higher frequency of metastasis is found.

[Studies on cross reactions of antisera against nucleotid-protein conjugates with denaturated desoxyribonucleic acids].

The reactivity of anti-nucleotide-sera (anti-UMP, anti-AMP, anti-GMP) with denatured DNA's of 10 different sources was investigated by means of quantitative complement fixation. The haptene specificity of the anti-nucleotide antibodies was shown by haptene inhibition of the reaction with DNA. Anti-UMP showed cross-reactions with other pyrimidine-derivatives, but to a lesser extent; anti-GMP cross-reacted with adenine structures. Quantitative differences were observed in the reaction of anti-UMP, anti-AMP and anti-GMP with DNA's of various (G + C)-contents. These differences could not be correlated in all cases with the overall base composition of the DNA.
