Antibodies elicited by defined oligodeoxyribonucleotide sequences.

Antibodies to the oligodeoxyribonucleotides d(pT)3, d(pT)4, d(pT)6 and d(pA-A-T-T) were elicited in rabbits by immunization with electrostatic complexes of the respective haptens with methylated bovine serum albumin (MBSA). The antisera were assayed by complement fixation using denatured DNA's of various sources as antigens. The specificities of the antibodies were determined by estimating the inhibition of the complement fixation reaction by defined oligodeoxyribonucleotides. The antibodies were shown to be specific for the sequence of the oligode-oxyribonucleotides or parts of it.

Properties of two Clostridia strains acting as catalysts for the preparative stereospecific hydrogenation of 2-enoic acids and 2-alken-1-ols with hydrogen gas.

A Clostridium strain growing on crotonate/hydrogencarbonate, which is able to hydrogenate stereospecifically 2-enoates as well as other unsaturated compounds with hydrogen gas, has been isolated and methods for its propagation elucidated. For this strain and for Clostridium kluyveri DSM 555 grown on ethanol/acetate/hydrogencarbonate, samples of 200-l batches were assayed to determine the hydrogenation activity for (E)-2-methyl-2-butenoate and (E)-2-buten-1-ol as a function of time during the exponential and stationary growth phases. For the strain growing on crotonate/hydrogencarbonate, the hydrogenation rate as a function of substrate concentration, pH and temperature has been measured. Storage conditions for both strains are given.

Benign multilocal cystic nephroma.

Three cases of multilocular cystic nephroma are described. This entity differs from congenital multicystic kidney and adult polycystic disease in that it involves only a segment of one kidney. While the excretory urogram, nephrotomogram, and arteriogram show the lesion to be primarily avascular, the two cases studied by ultrasound were predominantly solid. This finding is felt to relate to the small size of the cysts as well as the presence of some solid primitive components. Because it is difficult to differentiate this lesion from an avascular renal carcinoma, surgical biopsy should be considered to help avoid a needless nephrectomy.

[Results of myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (author's transl)].

Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy by means of the microsphere technique is a valuable method for detecting regional myocardial scars. The use of the microsphere technique is indicated in all patients who have had myocardial infarction and before coronary bypass operations. In a certain group of patients with severe but atypical angina pectoris and a normal coronary arteriogram and in some arrhythmias the perfusion scintigram can provide information on changes coronary microcirculation. The assessment of myocardial blood flow redistribution under pharmacological intervention is a further indication for the microsphere technique.

[Determination of the severity of mitral stenosis by hemodynamic and echocardiographic parameters].

M-Mode and two-dimensional echocardiographic examinations were performed in 70 patients with pure or prevailing mitral stenosis. Mitral valve excursion, mitral valve opening area (MVOAe) and diastolic E-F slope were determined and compared with the gradient across the valve and the opening area obtained during cardiac catheterization. Mitral valve excursion and E-F slope showed mean values of 1.71 cm and 1.98 cm/sec. respectively and were indicative of a stenosed mitral valve. Correlation between E-F slope and gradient with MVOAe was poor. The correlation coefficient was r = +0.56 and r = 0.34 resp. MVOAe compared favorably to the mitral valve area determined at cardiac catheterization (r = + 0.96) and the gradient across the mitral valve (r = 0.90)9 We conclude: 1. Determination of the mitral valve opening area by means of two-dimensional echocardiography represents a valuable addition in the assessment of the severity of mitral stenosis. 2. M Mode echocardiography indicates the presence, but not the severity of mitral stenosis. 3. Computerized planimetry is superior to the manually planimetered opening area and represents a reproducible, exact and time-saving procedure.

Visualization of vascular structures during routine nephrotomography.

Using an immediate nephrotomogram at 30 to 40 seconds, one can show the nephrographic phase and often visualized the renal vein, splenic vein, and portal vein. In a series of 200 consecutive patients, technique was adequate in 169. Some visualization of the renal veins was obtained in 54% and the splenic vein was demonstrated in 25% of the immediate nephrotomograms.

[Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy - methods and fundamentals (author's transl)].

Myocardial perfusion studies with labelled particles make a detailed analysis of the distribution of myocardial perfusion possible. Methodical and physiological fundamentals are described and the reliability of the method is shown by double radionuclide imaging. LAD-stenoses (greater than 70%) show a decreased activity in the distal areas of the LAD (on the average 36,5 +/- 10,3% in contrast to 59 +/- in normals). Mean local activity is 14,9 +/- 1,8% within scars. Scars and hemodynamically effective stenoses can be imaged with high sensitivity. Total defects (smaller than 15% of the activity maximum) correspond to a scar. A moderate reduction of uptake (15--50% of the activity maximum) does not allow any differentiation between scar and reversible diminution of perfusion.

[Reversible pulmonary arterial hypertension after medication of aminorexfumarate (author's transl)].

It is reported on a patient who 8 years ago and 42 developed a primary pulmonary arterial hypertension after medication with medicaiton with aminorefumarate, an antiappetizing compound whose structure is similar to ephedrine. A control measurement of the pulmonary artery pressure 8 years later showed normal values for the pressure in the right cavities and in the pulmonary artery. Beside a short term medication with nitro compounds no further medication was given. The case in one of the very few with primary pulmonary arterial hypertension where a normalization of the pulmonary artery pressure could be documented.
