Observation of B+ --> Lambda c+ Lambda c- K+ and B0 --> Lambda c+ Lambda c- K0 decays.

We report the first measurements of the doubly charmed baryonic B decays B --> Lambda c+ Lambda c- K. The B+ --> Lambda c+ Lambda c- K+ decay is observed with a branching fraction of (6.5(-0.9)(+1.0)+/-1.1+/-3.4)x10(-4) and a statistical significance of 15.4sigma. The B0 --> Lambda c+ Lambda c- K0 decay is observed with a branching fraction of (7.9(-2.3)(+2.9)+/-1.2+/-4.1)x10(-4) and a statistical significance of 6.6sigma. The branching fraction errors are statistical, systematic, and the error resulting from the uncertainty of the Lambda c+ --> pK- pi+ decay branching fraction. The analysis is based on 357 fb(-1) of data accumulated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider.

Transient decreases in Bispectral Index without associated changes in the level of consciousness during photic stimulation in an epileptic patient.

This case report describes a patient with a history of epileptic seizures who showed unusual decreases in the Bispectral Index (BIS) attributable to the induction of abnormal slow electroencephalographic (EEG) waves by photic stimulation, without any associated decrease in his level of consciousness. After starting anticonvulsive therapy, photic stimulation no longer induced abnormal EEG activity nor decreased BIS values. These findings suggest that BIS values may not accurately reflect a patient's actual level of consciousness in the presence of epilepsy-related abnormal EEG activity and that the BIS monitor may be able to track such EEG changes.

A retrospective analysis of the use of brachytherapy in relation to early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx and its relationship to second primary respiratory and upper digestive tract cancers.

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate brachytherapy for early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx (SCO) in relation to second primary respiratory and upper digestive tract cancers (RUDT). Between 1976 and 2001, 111 previously untreated patients with stage I or II SCO were treated with Au-198 seed brachytherapy alone (36 cases) or Au-198 seed brachytherapy plus external irradiation (75 cases). Of the 111 patients, 28 patients had stage I disease and 83 patients had stage II disease. Each patient was evaluated for therapeutic efficacy, post-treatment quality of life (QOL) and a second cancer. The 5-year and 10-year cause-specific actuarial survival rates for stage I and II SCO were 87% and 86%, respectively. We found that the 5-year and 10-year survival rates for all SCOs combined with second primary RUDT cancers were 71% and 45%, respectively. 51 second primary RUDT cancers occurred successively in 41 patients following treatment for early stage oropharyngeal cancer and this was the sole prognostic factor by the multivariate analysis. Au-198 seed brachytherapy with or without ipsilateral external irradiation of up to 30 Gy was associated with fewer late complications in the oral cavity and salivary gland. We concluded that our treatment policy of brachytherapy with or without external irradiation for patients with early stage SCO was effective and acceptable from the standpoint of tumour control and post-treatment QOL.

Gene expressions of canine angiopoietin-1 and -2 in normal tissues and spontaneous tumours.

The angiopoietin (Ang) family of proteins are central to the regulation of angiogenesis. The purposes of this study were to determine cDNA sequences of canine Ang-1 and Ang-2 and investigate their expressions in normal tissues and spontaneous tumours. The cDNA sequences of canine Ang-1 and Ang-2 were 1,494 and 1,488 bp, and the deduced amino acid sequences were 497 and 495 residues, respectively. The cDNA sequences of canine Ang-1 and Ang-2 showed high homology with those of the other mammalian species. Canine Ang-1 and Ang-2 mRNA were detectable in all 22 normal tissues and spontaneous tumours. Higher mRNA expression level of canine Ang-2 was demonstrated in mammary simple carcinomas, haemangiosarcoma and hepatocellular carcinoma in comparison with normal tissues.

An unusual renal vascular anomaly: common origin of arteries to the lower poles demonstrated by a computed tomography angiography using 16-slice multidetector computed tomography.

Arterial connection between the left and right kidneys is extremely rare. Only eight cases of such anomalous conditions have been reported in the world literature and all were confirmed by invasive angiography or dissection. We report a patient with this vascular anomaly clearly demonstrated by 16-slice multidetector computed tomography.

Cutaneous plasmacytoma in three golden hamsters (Mesocrietus auratus).

Spontaneously occurring cutaneous tumours in three golden hamsters were characterized using histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural methods. Histologically, the tumours were composed of sheets of round to oval plasmacytoid cells with eccentrically placed nuclei. Tissue sections were weakly positive for anti-B lymphocyte antigen (BLA) staining. Ultrastructurally, large amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm were observed. BLA positivity and characteristics of ultrastructure showed the plasma cell origin.

Anatomicopathological study of vascular and biliary systems using cast samples of Fasciola-infected bovine livers.

In 117 livers with fascioliasis, this study was focused on the number of Fasciola, the number and intrahepatic localization of affected hepatic ducts and bile ducts, and the degree of fibrosis in the hepatic segments and bile ducts. The degree of pathological changes in bile ducts caused by fascioliasis was classified into five levels. The site of Fasciola habitation was most often the hepatic ducts of the porta hepatis: it was the left hepatic duct in 101 livers and the right hepatic duct in 88 livers. Casts were prepared by infusing synthetic resin into the hepatic arterial, portal, hepatic venous and biliary systems of 15 bovine livers with fascioliasis and then examined. In the left lobe, quadrate lobe, and caudate process where atrophic fibrosis was noted, the bile ducts became rod-shaped by losing branches, and the samples resembled dead branches of liver. Portal branches were thinned or completely terminated with marked fibrosis. Fine and irregular newly formed bile ducts not parallel with portal branches were observed in livers with markedly chronic fascioliasis. Distal portal branches in the right lobe, caudate lobe, and papillary process showed hypertrophic proliferative changes. The arterial system was generally well developed in thickened walls of bile ducts and formed vascular beds, and surrounded the bile ducts as tubes. In livers with severe fibrosis, capillaries were markedly developed and resembled glass cotton.

Optic nerve and spinal cord manifestations of malignant atrophic papulosis (Degos disease).

A fatal case of malignant atrophic papulosis (Degos disease) with optic nerve and spinal cord involvement is described. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the optic nerve showed abnormal signal enhancement on fat suppressed T1 weighted images after intravenous meglumine gadopentetate infusion. On T2 weighted sagittal images, a sawtooth pattern was observed over seven vertebral segments of the spinal cord. On necropsy, a severe loss of myelinated nerve fibres in the left optic nerve was seen, with thrombotic obstruction of the central retinal artery. Spongy degeneration was observed in all levels of the spinal cord, with patchy and motheaten patterns caused by thromboses and endothelial proliferation in subarachnoid vessels. Findings on MRI were consistent with findings on pathological examination.

Vaginal rhabdomyosarcoma in a dog.

A 10-year-old, female, mongrel showed hemorrhage from vulva. By magnetic resonance image (MRI) and endoscopic examination, a multipapillary mass with a grape-like appearance was found around the urethral opening. Histologically, the mass consisted of variable-sized round-, spindle-to-polygonal-shaped tumor cells including many multinuclear cells. Mitotic figures were also frequently observed. In some areas, that tumor cells were loosely arranged, with intercellular myxoid components. Immunohistochemically, these tumor cells were strongly positive for vimentin and focally positive for desmin but negative for myoglobin. Thus, the case was diagnosed as a relatively poorly differentiated botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma by the macroscopic, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical identification. This is the first report of botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma developing in the vagina of a dog.

Three-dimensional vasculature of the bovine liver.

To clarify anatomical distribution of Fasciola infection, the vascular and ductal architectures of the liver were studied by means of corrosion cast technique using synthetic resin. The arteria hepatica propria (AP) passes as the arteria gastroduodenalis (AG); AP becomes the left trunk after the porta hepatis; AP passes on the right side of vena porta communis (VPC) and projects AG while curving in a U-shape below the portal vein. Hepatic veins located between the vena hepatica media (HM) and vena hepatica dextra (HD) varied widely among specimens and were irregular, including the vena hepatica dorso-lateralis sinistra (Hds), vena hepatica dorso-lateralis dextra (Hdd), vena hepatica lobi caudati (Hlc), venae hepaticae processus caudati (Hpc), venae hepaticae processus papillaris (Hpp), and the hepatic vein to the dorsal intermediate part, which directly or indirectly drained into the vena cava caudalis. The courses of the bovine hepatic veins were markedly diverse, and anastomoses between vena hepatica sinistra (HS) and Hds were observed in about a half of the livers. The portal vein entered the liver as VPC slightly above the centre of the right lobe on the visceral surface. The intermediate or transverse part [pars transversa trunci sinistri (PTS)] of truncus sinister (TS), which extends from the entry of the portal vein into the left lobe of the liver, was slightly arched downward [pars umbilicalis trunci sinistri (PUS)]. The portal vein further arched from the distal end of TS to the umbilical vein and ran towards the inter-lobar incision between the left lobe and quadrate lobe. Based on these branches, hepatic segments were determined as 13 or 14 areas. A total of 15 bile ducts were derived from various lobes. The hepatic duct was about 2.6-6 cm long from the confluence of the right and left hepatic ducts to the division of the cystic duct and the common hepatic duct.

Peritoneal biphasic mesothelioma in a dog.

A 10-year-old German shepherd dog was presented with a severe abdominal distension. At necropsy, whitish and firm mass was observed in the mesentery with metastases in the pericardium and pleura. The intestinal serosa was thickened and stiff. Histologically, the tumours were composed of a biphasic population of cells, which reacted with cytokeratin, vimentin and Wilms' tumour 1 protein antibody. Ultrastructural examination revealed numerous microvilli, abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, numerous desmosomes and bundles of microfilament. The tumour was classified as biphasic mesothelioma of peritoneal origin.

Subcutaneous Angiolipoma of Abdomen in a Golden Hamster (Mesocrietus auratus).

This is a single case report of an angiolipoma located in the subcutis of a 2-year-old golden hamster. The histological appearance of the tumour resembled that described in other species. The hamster died 1 month following removal of tumour and a necropsy was not performed. This is apparently the first recorded case of angiolipoma in a hamster.

Pulmonary adenosquamous carcinoma in a dog.

A mass that developed in the lung of a 10-year-old mixed-breed dog was pathologically examined. Histopathological examination showed papillary and tubular growth of glandular epithelium-like cells in some areas and growth of squamous cells arranged in nests in other areas, showing coexistence of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma in a lung tumour. Immunohistochemical staining with anti-keratin-cytokeratin antibody was strongly positive for cytoplasms in both components. Electron microscopically, the neoplastic cells of the adenocarcinoma component had features of glandular cells, with microvilli, numerous free ribosomes, large round secretory granules and intercellular desmosomes. Non-keratinized squamous cells had tonofilaments and intercellular desmosomes. These findings led to the diagnosis of primary adenosquamous carcinoma, which demonstrates phenotypic profiles characteristic of both epidermal keratinocytes and glandular epithelium.

The risk of radiation-induced cancer in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck and its results of treatment.

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and the results of treatment of cancer induced by radiotherapy for early stage (stage I and II) squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCH). The clinical records of 355 patients with early stage malignant lymphoma of the head and neck region treated by radiotherapy were reviewed, and then the records of 1358 patients with early stage SCH (oral cavity, 956; larynx, 154; oropharynx, 110; maxillary sinus, 86; lip, 20; epipharynx, 17; hypopharynx, 15) who underwent radiotherapy were reviewed. The disease-specific 10-year survival rate of the patients with 355 malignant lymphoma was 61%, and 5 cases of radiation-induced cancer occurred more than 8 years after irradiation. The crude incidence of radiation-induced cancer in the malignant lymphoma patients was 1.4%, and the 10-year probability by the actuarial life table method was 0.8%. The 10-year survival rate of the early stage SCH patients was 71%. The crude incidence of a second cancer in a previously irradiated field after an 8-year latent period (SCI) in the SCH patients was 1.8% (25/1358), and the 10-year probability was 1.6%. 12 SCIs were treated by surgery and 8 of those 12 patients (67%) resulted in success, whereas treatment by radiation resulted in failure in every other case. The risk of SCIs in the SCH group was higher than in the early stage malignant lymphoma group, although the difference was not statistically significant. The possibility of radiation-induced cancer in SCH is small, and the advantage of radiation therapy compares favourably with the risks of other treatments.

Melanocytic matricoma in a dog.

We report a tumor that developed at the root of the tail in a male, 2-year-old Shih Tzu dog. Histologically, the tumor consisted of basaloid epithelial cells, with shadow cells and neoplastic melanocyte proliferation. Immunohistochemically, epithelial components were positive for keratin/cytokeratin but basaloid cells were negative. Mononuclear or multinuclear melanocytes were positive for vimentin, S-100 protein, and HMB-45. In conclusion, this dog was diagnosed with canine melanocytic matricoma on the basis of the similarity of the histologic and immunohistochemical features in humans, and it may be the first case in an animal.

A malar granular cell tumor in a djungarian hamster.

'Granular cell' tumor observed in the malar subcutis of a Djungarian hamster was examined to determine its cellular origin. Histologically, the tumor consisted of a solid growth of oval or spindle-shaped large cells with abundant cytoplasm filled with eosinophilic granules that were periodic acid-Schiff-positive and diastase-resistant. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive to anti-vimentin and anti-desmin antibodies and a few cells showed positivity to anti-actin antibody as well. They did not react to myoglobin, S-100 protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Electron microscopic studies revealed that the tumor cells had pinocytotic vesicles, dense plaque and microfilaments. The first granular cell variant of myogenic tumor reported here in Djungarian hamsters was differentiated from granular cell tumor of Schwann cell origin.
