[Problems in urinary bladder cancer in the aged].

In general, the result of treatment for bladder cancer in elderly patients over 70 years seems less favorable than younger patients. The analysis of case records of our clinic suggests two responsible factors. First, proportion of invasive to superficial cancer is higher in elderly than younger patient; the proportions are 37, 35, 29, 23 and 18%, in ninth, eighth, seventh, sixth and under-sixth decade respectively. Second, the cause of death indifferent to primary cancer is more frequent in elderly than younger patient. Main intercurrent diseases are hepatic, cerebro-vascular, cardio-pulmonary diseases, and cancer of other organs. It is concluded that, superficial cancer should be distinguished more accurately from invasive cancer and treated more properly especially in elderly patient.

[Primary multiple malignant tumors associated with bladder cancer].

Of 487 patients with urothelial bladder cancer seen during the past 22 years, 37 (7.6%) had other primary malignant tumors. In recent years the number of patients with double cancer markedly increased. The male/female ratio was 2.7:1 and the mean age at the time of diagnosis of the second primary cancer was 70 (56-84) years. Of the other organ cancers, 18 (47%) were in the digestive tract and 7 (18%) in the respiratory tract. Six patients had lesions that were diagnosed simultaneously and 31 had lesions that were diagnosed at intervals. The interval in 31 patients with metachronous double cancer ranged from 1 year and 1 month to 40 years; the mean interval was 9 years and 7 months.

Transrectal longitudinal ultrasonotomography of the prostate by electronic linear scanning.

Transrectal longitudinal ultrasonotomography of the prostate with the newly developed electronic linear scanning method was done on 100 cases and the characteristic echo patterns for each prostatic disease were obtained. With this method we can observe real-time longitudinal tomograms of the prostate, seminal vesicles and bladder. Real-time observations make it easier to examine the relationship between the prostate and its surrounding organs, especially the bladder neck and the prostatic urethra, at the time of urination.
