[Experimental hypocalcemia as a model for the study of etiopathogenetic factors of hypocalcemic hysteroparesis due to parturition in dairy cows].

Hypocalcaemia was experimentally induced to cattle of different age groups, and the resulting model showed that intraplasmic parathormone-induced calcium rise due to activation of calcium from the apatite crystals of the skeletal depot was a function of age and a sufficiently plausible explanation for age-dependent growing morbidity rates in the context of hypocalcaemic hysteroparalysis in concomitance with parturition. High vitamine D3 doses are recommended for systematic prophylaxis.

[Influence of the bone-cement mixing time on hypotonic blood circulation reactions in hip-joint replacement surgery].

The amount of methylmethacrylatemonomer that is released into the blood-stream, during the alloplastic replacement of the hip-joint, depends on the time taken to prepare the bone cement(so-called extracorporeal polymerization-time). In vitro experiments reveal that the release of monomers depends on the preparation time. Gas-chromatographic monomer determinations show, that by prolongation of the preparation time from 2 to 5 minutes, the amount of monomer released into the blood-stream is decreased by a factor of 7. With the increase in preparation time the number of hypotonic circulatory reactions caused by the monomers will decrease. Extension of the extracorporeal polymerization-time from 2 to 5 minutes decreases the incidence of intra-operative circulatory depressions from 95% to 26%. These results were obtained by intra-arterial measurements of the blood pressure in the radial artery.

Cytological and cytogenetical studies on brain tumors. V. Preferential loss of sex chromosomes in human meningiomas.

Twelve out of 88 cytogenetically examined meningiomas of female patients showed, in addition to the typical loss of a chromosome 22, a loss of 1 or more chromosomes of group C. Among them 8 tumors had less than 8% cells with Barr-body-like particles, whereas in one tumor 12% and in 3 others over 20% Barr bodies were found, which, based on control studies, were classified as sex-chromatin negative, partly positive, and positive, respectively. In one case the loss of an X chromosome was verified by Giemsa banding. In 6 out of 24 meningiomas of male origin, the chromosomal morphology and association pattern strongly indicated that besides the loss of a chromosome 22, the Y chromosome was also missing. Moreover, the loss of the male sex chromosome could be ascertained in 4 tumors by the conspicuous absence of Y fluorescence in interphase nuclei and in metaphase plates after fluorescence staining. The findings are discussed in connection with the gonosomal loss in other human tumors and in old age.

[Behavior of calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium and glucose concentrations in the plasma of ewes in the perinatal period].

Blood samples were taken from 40 ewes in a flock of the Merino meat breed at the spring lambing once daily from five days before lambing to 3-4 days afterwards. Blood calcium ranged from 9.4 to 10.8 mg/100 ml, phosphorus between 3.6 and 4.9 mg/100 ml and magnesium from 2.1 to 2.6 mg/100 ml. There were no statistically significant changes in mineral concentrations at the time of parturition. Plasma glucose increased as parturition approached, averaging 46 mg/100 ml five days before lambing, twice this figure at lambing, followed by a rapid fall to pre-lambing values. A comparison with similar observations in cows showed that there was no essential difference in blood glucose between the two species, but there were considerable differences in the concentrations of minerals, attributable to differences in average age of the groups of animals examined, and to the higher milk yield of cows.
