Investigation into the functional characteristic of m. quadriceps femoris in man with "stimulation mechanography".

The force and positive slope under isometric conditions produced by electrically evoked contractions of the m. quadriceps femoris in man were measured during two days without physical work and on two days with different kind of exercise. The relationship between force and slope is described by a logarithmic function. The changes after exercise were different in dependence of the kind of exercise.

Compensation of the low-pass filter properties of the current measuring internode in potential-clamped myelinated nerve fibres.

The bandwidth of membrane current measurements in potential-clamped Ranvier nodes is limited by the low-pass filter properties of the internodes. If about 35% of the current measuring internode is grounded via an additional electrode, the bandwidth of this internode increases by a factor of about 40. Consequently, in potential clamp experiments the measured time course of the early ionic currents changes markedly, while the duration of the capacity current is shortened.

Changes in myelinated nerve fibres caused by insulating layers.

Single myelinated nerve fibres of the frog were investigated electron microscopically and electrophysiologically. The following results were obtained. Dissected internodes exhibited small deteriorations only compared to undissected fibres. In the vaseline seal the cross section area of the axoplasm was reduced by a factor of about 3. In the air gap the corresponding figure was about 5. With electrical measurements of up to 2 h the vaseline seal did not affect the axoplasmic resistance of the belonging internode. In corresponding experiments with an air gap, the axoplasmic resistance of the internode doubled after 49 +/- 14 min (mean +/- S.D.; n = 8). Thereafter, the resistance increased rapidly up to about 3,000 times normal, depending on the atmospheric humidity. The consequences of these findings for potential clamp experiments are discussed.

A method for increasing the frequency response of voltage clamped myelinated nerve fibres.

In voltage clamp experiments on myelinated nerve fibres the time resolution of the current measurement is limited by the low-pass characteristics of the internodes. We increased the corner frequency of the current passing internode by grounding one half of this internode externally. Using a simplified equivalent circuit we calculated an increase in the bandwidth of the internode by a factor of about 6. Consequently, the peak value of the recorded capacity current increased while its duration was considerably shortened.

[Dependence of the specific growth rate of Escherichia coli MI 30 on the ammonia concentration].

The transient behaviour of ammonium limited continuous cultures of E. coli ML 30 led to the hypothesis that the bistability of pyruvate formation primarily is caused by a bistability of the ammonia metabolism. Therefore, a function of mu([NH+4]) should be expected different from that of Monod type. Measurements of the specific growth rate during washout of continuous cultures at different ammonium concentrations and at such low cell concentrations that the changes in the ammonium concentration of the medium could be neglected, showed a complex function with a relative minimum near 2 mg/1NH+4. This function allows bistability of the ammonium concentration in an ammonium limited continuous culture. The results are discussed on the basis of the two systems of ammonia assimilation found in prokaryotic cells.

[Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner, 1862) Diptera: Sacrophagidae) causing a vaginal myiasis in domesticated two-humped camels in the Mongolian People's republic].

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner, 1862) [Diptera: Sarcophagidae] was established as the causal agent of a vaginal myiasis in female camels in the Mongolian Democratic Republic. Changes of the genitals occur nearly the beginning of June, 4-6 weeks after foaling, a spontaneous recovery is seen at the beginning of October. Clinical signs of the vaginal myiasis and morphology of the three stages of larvae are described in detail.

[Human myiasis in middle Europe].

A report is given on 4 cases of myiasis of the mucous membrane of different localisation and etiology observed in the GDR (vaginal myiasis by Lucilia sericata, urethral and vesicular myiasis by Calliphora vicina, rectal myiasis by Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis and ophthalmomyiasis by Oestrus ovis). Biological peculiarities and habits of life of the causative organisms, pathogenesis of the different forms of parasitosis in man and clinical pictures are described. The cases mentioned show that occasionally is to reckoned with autochthonic myiasis - above all due to larve of blue-bottles, meat and bot-flies - not only in tropic countries, but also in Middle Europe (especially during the warm seasons and when a considerable quantity of flies is present). Among the predisposing factors for furunculous and migrating skin myiasis as well as wound, urogenital, intestinal and other myiases of the mucous membrane comatous conditions due to severe basic diseases play a special part. On unhygienic conditions, however, the parasitic invasion of the maggots of certain, in general harmless species of flies into the integumentum and into various hollow organs of man is just possible also in primarily healthy persons with good general condition. In an adequate anamnesis and suspicious clinical symptomatology, therefore, a myiasis should be included into differential-diagnostic considerations.
